to cringe at people who talk about "Boris"

Why do people continue to talk about him as if he was their mate?
Has he really succeeded in fooling so many?
It makes me cringe everytime people say it.

Lets see what Boris says
I'd like to meet up but it depends on Boris

on and on it goes.
The man is an embarassment.

@Pinkywoo

I think it's more derogatory than matey, like it's too embarrassingly depressing to call him the Prime Minister so people say Boris. It's a lack of respect not affection.
This is closer to the truth. It is a sign of disrespect for most towards his premiership. Why would you listen to a man called Boris? Sounds ridiculous.
user1471565182 · 05/01/2021 12:56

I wonder why he doesnt use Alexander Boris De Pfeffel? and also simultanously tries to make a thing about Starmer being a 'Sir' for actual achievements?

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 12:57

Its meant to make him look all matey and reliable when hes anything but.

What's meant to? How does people calling him Boris make him look all matey and reliable? He has no control over what name people call him.

AuthorsOfForever · 05/01/2021 12:58

Personally, I think it's more that people don't have respect for him as a leader. I've never referred to any other PM with only their first name.

Came on to say the same thing. It's a sign of contempt, not affection.
ItsNotGreenItsBlue · 05/01/2021 13:01

Would you prefer we all called him Mr Johnson? He’s not earned any respect whatsoever for me to call him that. Boris the buffoon is his name round here

Ticklytoes · 05/01/2021 13:02

I also popped on to say it’s because he’s hated. It’s supposed to be an insult.

BabyLlamaZen · 05/01/2021 13:03

What else should they call him? Hmm

And thankfully most people like to abide by the law and do the right thing. No one I know actually likes the man.

reprehensibleme · 05/01/2021 13:03

Agree with pps who reckon it's a cultish thing, to make him seem more 'one of the people', because, let's face it, we don't call Keir Stramer 'Keir', do we, and it's not as if we would likely be referring to anyone else.

DayBath · 05/01/2021 13:04

@randomer

I have just had a short exchange at a distance, with an acquaintance. I commented on how sorry I was for people with school age children. Much head shaking from her , then she pipes up with "Boris seems to be learning doesn't he? Last night he said We may be out of this by ..... " It was as if she was talking about a local person.
I know your type. Most of what she said probably washed over you as you fumed inside about it and planned your Mumsnet post. Today it's Boris, tomorrow it will be some little grammar slip up, then a mispronunciation. There's always something with people like you.
EngineeringFix · 05/01/2021 13:04

I notice now that I never say Maggie but Mrs Thatcher or Margaret Thatcher because with time and age I have come to respect her. Not agree with her, note.

If you do a forum Search you will find mostly people call him Kier actually.
imnottoofussed · 05/01/2021 13:05

In my experience it's used more disrespectfully definitely not a matey way

Crystalclair · 05/01/2021 13:07

Boris has done the best he could. No other leader would have got things 100% right, and Boris can't be expected to either.

MiriamMargo · 05/01/2021 13:09

Oh get over yourself,

Brighterthansunflowers · 05/01/2021 13:09

You can get quite a lot of venom into how you pronounce “Boris” you know.

Definitely don’t call him that cause I think he’s my mate. But he’s the only Boris that I’m likely to talk about so it’s just because it’s clear who I mean without needing to say his full name (unlike David Cameron for example).

randomer · 05/01/2021 13:09

@Crystalclair,ah you have cheered me up no end.Having a laugh now.

I don't think people referring to Maggie thought she was their Bessie mate.

Dyrne · 05/01/2021 13:10

Nice to see I’m not the only one who occasionally calls him Bozza.

It’s definitely not a sign of affection here.

Honestly I find it slightly weirder that even though you dislike him you afford him the respect of referring to him as “Mr Johnson”.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 13:12

Do you cringe at 'Harry and Meghan' or 'William and Kate' @randomer?

Tomcullenisahero · 05/01/2021 13:13

Boris is his name and by using someone's first name doesn't mean it's a term of endearment or affection. It's just his name.
Also OP, if I was referring to 'BJ' it wouldn't mean Boris Johnson

His first name is Alexander
Moomin12345 · 05/01/2021 13:14

I say Johnson. Seems more fitting and Boris isn't even his first name.

akerman · 05/01/2021 13:15

It’s possible Boris has done the best he could, which is a truly terrifying thought.

We deserve better.

theDudesmummy · 05/01/2021 13:18

I keep forgetting not to call him Boris, it grates me too but I do it by mistake sometimes. I mean to call him Johnson (or more formally That Cunt Johndon) but the bloody Boris thing gets into your head.

(I never call Hancock anything other than Hand On Cock, though, it's the given term in our house. We have to childishly amuse ourselves somehow in these times ).
