Put a splash of sunflower oil in your hand, add salt and rub all over the potatoes before cooking. When cooked the skin is crispy and salty. The best bit!

Re cooking on a bonfire - could you microwave, wrap in foil and cook on open fire in house (coal ? logs?)

Do you salt before cooking?

Yes salt and a little oil, rub all over the potatoes before baking.

It even works with new or salad potatoes.

I use salt pepper with a good spray of 1 calorie virgin oil.
Blob of butter when it is nearly done.

No to tin foil! If you want it properly crispy then don't use it. And no to microwaves.

Of course. Only a deviant would do otherwise.

However, beans have no place on a baked potato. Cheese? Yes. Coleslaw? Yes. Cut the potato open and mash in some bone marrow before shoving it back in the oven for a bit? Yes. But beans? Absolutely not.

Either way, baked potato skins are essentially a way of transferring salt and butter into my face.

We have a Ninja Max! Prick potatoes all over, rub in olive oil, season with salt and coarse black pepper. Bake in Ninja air fryer for 65-70 mins, turning once.

That depends, in a fire or on a BBQ you might not want to 'contaminate' the skin.

BTW I think I heard Victorians used baked potatoes as hand warmers, you would put them in your pockets.

I was telling my DH that when I was a kid there used to be those public advice tv slots and one was definitely about advising elders to keep warm by popping baked potatoes in their pockets. He didn’t believe me (and it does sound bonkers but I definitely saw it).

@52andblue from memory (this was back in the 60s) the potatoes were put in the hot ash/ embers.
I wouldn't like to say if you could do them in a house coal fire.
We'd have the leftovers fried up for breakfast.
Re the baked spud hand warmers, an old "nagsman" trick to deal with a biting horse was to have a hot potato on a stick, when the horse swung his head to bite the groom would hold the spud up so the horse would burn his mouth.
