Another day of having to scrub dog shit off my kids shoes and my pram wheels. I am so angry with dog owners who leave dog shit everywhere. The pavements and parks near are a disgusting obstacle course, that my kids are bad at navigating.
The current penalty is £50. I don’t know if it is ever enforced.

AIBU that all dogs should be licenced to their owner with their DNA sample on record. Dog Wardens should trace poo samples to the owners. Owners get a 5k fine and are banned from dog owning.

Dog owners should clean up after their dogs. When I went out the other morning I also cleaned up after two other dogs which weren't mine.

That said, I have never in my life seen a pavement (or any surface) strewn with so much dog shite that it is impossible to avoid with minimal effort. Yet in MN land everyone seems to live where the streets are ankle deep in it.

NerdyBird · 03/01/2021 15:36

It has got bad in our area too. We think it's more people getting dogs because of being home. We don't have a dog, but both dh and I end up carrying nappy bags to clear up poo. Doubt the council care, but I might report it just in case.

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 03/01/2021 15:41

I actually have emailed our council with photos and directions to piles of shit in my area!! Last summer!!. Blush
Was cleaned up I may add!! Also photos of overflowing bins and rubbish in our sea front... I actually congratulated the collector on his new shiney cart and wished it a long and fruitful life!!
Grin
Online council account is easy to set up. Upload your pics and you are good to go!!

Ickle37 · 03/01/2021 15:41

Stronger penalties!! Rolling it into the housec when i took my baby for a walk. The rage and fury.
During mat leave i got so enraged i would stop and watch every dog who pooed and stare at their owners until they picked it up ( i live in a dog walking hot spot). I think primary school children should run campaigns, and it should become a social evil like drinking driving etc.
In the middle of a pandemic where hygiene is on everyone's mind, its ok to leave steaming animal shit in the street ( far more dangerous to my toddler than covid fyi) !! I hate the people that do this. HATE them.

Spidey66 · 03/01/2021 15:47

I do agree with you, but as a dog owner, I can confidently say that the majority of us are responsible and clean up straight away. I always seem to have dozens of poo bags in coats, bags etc, ready to clean up. I know many other owners from the park who are also equally conscientious.

Please do not far us all with the same brush. It really is a tiny minority who behave like that.

MaskingForIt · 03/01/2021 15:48

Absolutely agree with this. But not just dogs, cats too.

Then when cats shit in my garden and contaminate my veg patch, and I get cat shit on my garden gloves, on my knees and on my garden tools the pet warden will be able to track them down and ban them from owning free-range shitting machines.

MaizeBlouse · 03/01/2021 15:48

I am so with you OP.
It's awful in my area too. We live in the city and don't have a car so I walk everywhere with my 2 DSs on the buggy. It's like an Olympic sport dodging them all on the pavements, I have learnt to remember where they are day by day on my rou s trips to preschool, it enrages me every day!!!

Some dog owners (and it is obviously the minority) are complete and utter twats for not clearing up after thier dogs. I've also seen people faking looking for poo bags or walking 20 ft in front of thier off lead dog and not noticing them poo. There's one park near us which I don't ever take my kids in to cos it's like a poo hot spot.

HepLaurenceLB · 03/01/2021 15:48

@missmouse101

Its utterly gross. But I'm worried about this 'scrubbing '. It conjures up a horrible picture of shite flicking around off the brush bristles. I think wiping and washing in hot soapy water is surely better (or am I taking it too literally? )
I had to hose it then I used warm soapy water but unfortunately I had to use a brush to get it out of the treads in The pram wheel. I don’t own a dog but have to spend time doing this once a week. It makes me so angry.

I agree wholeheartedly. Lazy, selfish, disgusting bastards who make life unpleasant for everyone else.

HepLaurenceLB · 03/01/2021 15:50

Maybe you live in a nicer area with a more proactive council. Here in Lambeth, the street she are covered in it.

It would be the one thing - along with littering and flytipping - that Priti Patel could sell me the death penalty on. Only it really is too good for them.

WildNorthEast · 03/01/2021 15:56

I absolutely hate this. We can't go to a park to play football with the children without the fear of the ball rolling in a turd. Makes me so cross. And the ones who do pick it up, then hurl the bag into a bush - WTAF are they thinking???

Burnthurst187 · 03/01/2021 15:56

In my city the maximum fine is £1,000. There's stencils stating this spray painted on the pavements. I still see quite a lot of dog shit though. Its worse at night as you can't see it as easy, had to hose the pram wheels a few times. Not sure if anybody has ever been fined

Whammyyammy · 03/01/2021 15:58

YANBU. I find it disgusting too. Most county councils have one or two dog wardens, which are normally useless, so doubt fines are very often enforced.

Our local park is an on lead area, rarely do people adhere to this and dogs are way off from owners, so they couldn't possibly see their pooch doing its business-maybe that's why they're exercised this way??
I've even seen dog mess in the play area of parks when taking the dgc.
Sadly its a few irresponsible owners.

pinkstripeycat · 03/01/2021 15:59

I’m fed up of it aswell. We live near fields where there is a poo bin. Dog owners let they dogs poo at the top of our drive and also throw their bags of pop over our fence. Ages ago I called the council about dog fouling as there had been an article in the local paper about them cracking down on it. I was told to take a photo of the dog pooing and then follow the person home and then provide the council with the information! They said it’s the only way they can enforce it. Makes no sense. It’s not up to us to do their job!

bloodyhairy · 03/01/2021 15:59

I totally agree. If I was out walking my dog and was caught short (unlikely, as I always have poo bags), I'd knock on doors before just leaving it!

PrivateParty · 03/01/2021 16:00

I take it the point of this is dog owners who don't pick up dog dirt from the pavement rather than just every single person who doesn't stop their dog from doing the toilet except from where they tell them they're allowed to. Coz that would be quite difficult.

SquatBetty · 03/01/2021 16:01

Owners that don't pick up their dog's shit are filthy selfish bastards. If I was in charge I'd rub their fucking noses in it.

nuggles · 03/01/2021 16:01

There is a serial "I let me dog shit on the street and not pick it up" right by the school gates almost every day.

Just before the Christmas break the school had to clear the entrance and hose it down themselves. They've even put a notice up and left free bags for people to clear up after their dogs.

Absolutely disgusting lazy dog ownership

Hecksonaplane · 03/01/2021 16:07

I totally agree with you, I'm a dog owner and this has always given me the rage!
I personally would hit them where it hurts, if they're caught they should have a bag of shit attached to their wrist to carry with them for 30 days, eat sleep and work with it - may be a bit harsh but I bet there would be no repeat offenders Grin

DGRossetti · 03/01/2021 16:07

@SquatBetty

Owners that don't pick up their dog's shit are filthy selfish bastards. If I was in charge I'd rub their fucking noses in it.
And then hang them ...
Thegifthorse · 03/01/2021 16:19

I do understand that some owners pick up after their dogs, but it surely cannot be the majority that do?! There is so much!! It is not unheard of for there to be between 3-8 poos on each street I walk on around our area. It's so gross. Though i guess it stays around for a few days, and dogs will probably poop on the same routes, so maybe it is just a few skanky owners...

I agree. Hang the owners.

FOJN · 03/01/2021 16:24

I think dog owners should have to undertake an online course which covers all aspects of responsible ownership before they can buy or adopt a dog. This would include legal compliance with picking up poop and keeping your dog under control in addition to training and welfare issues. Breeders and rescue centres should not be permitted to sell or rehome dogs without receiving a copy of the certificate obtained from completing such a course. This might make people more aware of the level of responsibility required to own a dog and make them less inclined to think picking up after their dogs is optional.

Penalties for not clearing up after your dog should be much higher.

To the poster who politely picked up after a lazy owner and tied the bag to the wing mirror, you demonstrated great restraint, I'd have smeared it on the windscreen.

I'd also like to see responsible dog owners challenging the lazy owners if they see them leaving shit in any public space.

I think dog hate on MN can be a bit extreme but I'm usually in agreement with the frustrations people post about. I have a dog a try to make sure I am a responsible owner.

Twinmama32 · 03/01/2021 16:25

I’m interested in the dog toilet! What is this and how can I get one?!
