For thinking that people are naive to be taken in by celebrity PR

sst1234 · 02/01/2021 16:41

Reading several threads recently gushing about celebrities who are amazing and enlightened and doing so much good in the world world, apparently. Am I the only one who isn’t taken in my this nonsense and the image that celebrity PR machines create in order to make celebrities more likeable and bankable. Are people really that gullible that they can’t see past it and get taken in by it. Is everyone an armchair campaigner now, a few interviews, podcasts, do gooder tweets, turning up to Publicity events to ‘help’ the needy and they deserve a knighthood? Really?
Harry and Meghan, Marcus Rashford are few that spring to mind. Can no one else this is just marketing, and cheap talk. It makes them money, keeps them in the news and prolongs their talentless, flagging careers.

I disagree about Marcus Rashford. He’s very talented for a start, and I think he genuinely believes in the cause. Maybe he’s having help, but if so, so what? He’s done a lot of good.

FoxyTheFox · 02/01/2021 16:42

Andeanwhile, various charities and good causes are benefiting from it. Where is the harm?

FoxyTheFox · 02/01/2021 16:43

*And meanwhile

emptyplinth · 02/01/2021 16:44

Marcus Rashford talentless?
Confused

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/01/2021 16:44

Marcus Rashford seems a lovely young man, just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he’s not concerned about hungry children and what he achieved was fantastic.
Harry and Meghan however are privileged and preachy- that’s what puts me off.

Greysparkles · 02/01/2021 16:46

Marcus rashford?!
An extremely talented football player in the prime of his career.
Who has never forgotten where he came from and wants to help others still growing up like he did

That man has my respect

VimFuego101 · 02/01/2021 16:48

I disagree about Marcus R, but in general I agree with you. It's all staged and there's a PR behind the scenes working out how best to present a celeb to the public in order to reinforce a certain image, then stage photo opportunities appropriately.

LadyFoxtrot · 02/01/2021 16:50

Whilst I agree on H&M, you’ve totally destroyed your point by mentioning Rashford. He’s incredibly talented, so your talentless jibe doesn’t land, and has made a point of supporting causes that help those with less access to facilities, like he was when he was younger. Surely you can see the difference?

sst1234 · 02/01/2021 16:50

I mean Kim Kardashian is now a human rights activist? And people are influenced by this? The mind boggles.

OP posts:
Wineinthegarden · 02/01/2021 16:52

Totally disagree with you about Rashford, and you sound very mean spirited by mentioning him. Lots of celebrities are in it for self promotion but I don’t think he falls into that category.

I'd take this thread more seriously if you hadn't attacked Marcus Rashford. Talentless with a flagging career? All about the PR? For someone clapping herself on the back for being so much more perceptive than everyone else you really have made yourself look ignorant and sour.

Orf1abc · 02/01/2021 16:57

You're putting Kim Kardashian in the same category as Marcus Rashford, are you joking?

OhWhyNot · 02/01/2021 16:57

Who is convinced that Kim is now a human rights activist?

Some naive teenagers ? I think most people are well aware that she is only about promoting herself should that help others well that’s isn’t such a bad thing

buckeejit · 02/01/2021 17:00

Marcus Rashford is the best thing football has produced.

Some celebrities suck, I agree

ZaraW · 02/01/2021 17:01

YABVU you lost your argument when you included Marcus Rashford. Though I'm sure BoJo would agree 100% with you.

AgnesNaismith · 02/01/2021 17:02

Echo the above, Marcus Rashford deserves all the praise he gets! He’s rare not only in the ‘normal’ world but to go into the sordid world of football and maintain that much class and empathy...pretty amazing really...he’s literally changed 1000s of lives.

Sparklesocks · 02/01/2021 17:02

I think it’s a mix. Absolutely there are celebs whose ‘teams’ will attach them to certain causes, with photo ops and access to the press in return for fluffy copy in mainstream publications. It’s very shrewd and cynical. But equally I think there those who do care deeply about certain causes and understand that their money/status can raise money and awareness, and they’re motivated by a desire to help rather than the resulting PR which benefits them personally.

I used to work for a large charity and we had a lot of celebrities approach us who wanted to collaborate. Sometimes yes it was a fairly transparent PR grab, but sometimes you could see it was genuine and they had a personal connection to the cause. They’d often make large private donations alongside the work they were doing which they wouldn’t shout about.

I suppose it’s not always possible to know which is which. I do feel like Rashford falls into the latter though as he seems to be going further than the standard smiley photo op.

I guess you could also argue that if it benefits the charity, does it matter if their intentions are not selfless? Yes it’s cynical but it often can shed light on causes - particularly for the lesser known charities.

TheSilentStars · 02/01/2021 17:02

What a strange combination of famous people you've chosen to hate, OP.
Or, maybe not.

Agree with this 100% - Rashford is not to be bracketed with the Kardashians!
Grilledaubergines · 02/01/2021 17:03

You are the only one, OP. The rest of everyone are way too dim and gullible. Give yourself a high 5.

Tana433 · 02/01/2021 17:03

I disagree strongly about Marcus Rashford. He is a remarkable young man who is making a tremendous difference to the country. As for Harry and Meghan...meh, they burnt their bridges long ago and are no longer relevant.

You might want to research Marcus Rashfotd properly before proceeding Grin
BeautyAndTheBump1 · 02/01/2021 17:05

Definitely agree. Same with the social media posts of 'this is me with my rolls out' 'this is me without makeup, be yourself' its all for increased engagement because its popular.

Doyoumind · 02/01/2021 17:06

I have no interest in celebrity whatsoever and really dislike the fame that people with no discernible talent seem to achieve but YABU to lump Marcus Rashford in with the likes of Kim Kardashian. He is genuine and is putting his fame to good use. Plus he has a talent.
