Argument over London fireworks

Not sure if this is the correct topic for this but I just would like some of your views/thoughts.

So this morning me and husband had a small disagreement about the London fireworks last night. Being from London my self, I love them it brings back childhood memories,I love what they resemble and how London does them and I thought last nights were great and done safely and secretly not causing crowding

He however completely disagrees with this. (He is not from London) he says they have rewarded the ignorant rule breakers who went out to still try and watch them and get a glimpse. (As well saw a video in Facebook where people were not social distanced and probably came from afar into London). I did argue the toss saying you dont know if these people live in Central London and went for a walk and its also good that London did have them for the millions of people who have listened to the rules and did stay home. He says it's not nessecaru a waste of money and he sees it as hospitality when thats closed why are they letting off a huge public firework display

Anyway...Its put me in a foul mood all day with him but then again his one of these people that has to have an awnser for every conversation and will gladly stick his point of view into anything you don't agree with . I love the man dearly but his fucked me off and he knows he has as his been trying to be all nice nice all day. So yeah what's your thoughts on the fireworks

Me and my DH both agree with your DH, so yes I think YABU

Someone I knew commented that they were furious that they could see a drone display from their balcony at midnight.

Quite impressive considering it was done earlier in the week.

MojoMoon · 02/01/2021 09:51

What gatherings for the fireworks were there?

There as a big illegal rave in the docks close to Greenwich where it was but that was not because they wanted to see the fireworks (and it was raided by the police)

I think the only grumbles I have heard in my part of East London was people went to bed early and so didn't have the TV on. It was a very well kept surprise.

And the fireworks are one of the top watched things on iPlayer at the moment so guess a lot of people caught up with them later!

@ScrambledSmegs

I thought the big groups of people out in London last night were there for an anti-lockdown protest 'party' ? Obviously utter pillocks. But not there for fireworks. That was a pretty well-kept secret, friends in London who work on organising big events and who normally know all the inside info had no idea it was happening.

The fireworks and drones were at the O2 (millennium dome), also the Shard and Tower Bridge. I assumed those disparate areas were chosen on purpose to discourage anyone from going to watch it the news leaked.

Some people will always whinge about stuff. Just tune your H out.

Actually at the end of the Paddy McGuinness programme he mentioned something about staying watching BBC1 for the fireworks or light show later. Can't remember exactly. But I said to my DH "now people are going to go out in case there's something happening."

We missed it as there was an amazing display going on in the park across from our house (no idea who set it up but thank you!) and we ended up chatting to our neighbours outside til about 1.30am Grin

@Elephant4

I think the fireworks last night were communist propoganda tat.

Did anyone see the picture of Boris at his podium? What was that there for?

I'm so glad someone else thinks that. The whole thing chilled me. It smacked of propaganda
CoffeeCreamandSugar · 03/01/2021 03:26

@Elephant4

Boris's attempt at firework propoganda
I’m sorry but I did chuckle.

I cried. It made me very emotional. Mostly because it felt like another clap for the NHS, and what they need is more funding and PPE not gestures.

Furries · 03/01/2021 04:32

@Elephant4

Boris's attempt at firework propoganda
@Elephant4 - ha, funniest thing I’ve seen on here for a while.

Please tell me you are kidding. You didn’t really think that was Boris did you? 😂😂

SimonJT · 03/01/2021 07:24

@callistography So you think it was Johnson in the drone show!

puptent · 03/01/2021 14:11

You do know Boris is not actually the Mayor anymore...... It was a GLA organised thing, not central gov. And SK is Labour, so....

puptent · 03/01/2021 14:12

..not sure why he would stick Boris up there.....

SaltyTootsieToes · 03/01/2021 15:36

I thought it was a fabulous surprise and being spread out across London was a good idea too. Particularly liked the drone display thinking this may be the way forward rather than traditional fire works.

@Calmandmeasured1
Thought I might watch on iplayer but read how 'woke,' they are (BLM and NHS) so can't be bothered now.

Yeah, me too. Life was so much better when we didn’t have to consider treating people equally, and when pesky poor people died without healthcare. Hopefully now we’ve left the EU we can get back to True British Values.

ToniTheDonkey · 03/01/2021 16:34

I thought £1.5 million was too much to spend on it, but luckily I don’t live in London so it’s not my council tax paying for it.

callistography · 03/01/2021 19:46
@callistography So you think it was Johnson in the drone show!
😂😂 No! I'm just so annoyed at all that money that could have been used in a far better manner. Food banks are so necessary right now - that would have been a much better use than just effectively burning money.

I'm all for people being treated equally but I just don't see why a normally enjoyable event has to be turned into a political statement. We all know how hard everyone on the NHS frontline is working and are very grateful. We've heard about BLM for much of last year. We should just be able to enjoy an event without constantly hearing about these things.

I agree with your last sentence though. Grin

@puptent

@puptent I’m really hoping that by now people are being ironic with this type of post!

Just in case you weren’t, then it was Captain Tom not Boris. And if you were being ironic then apologies - but I’ve started to not tell the difference over the last few days 🤣

nancy75 · 04/01/2021 01:26

The only way I want to see Boris & fireworks at the same time is when someone sticks a rocket up his arse - actually SK might go for that idea!

I thought they were great, lots of countries had displays without crowds this year, they are watched around the world & do attract tourists by showing off London. Once this shit show is all over we do want & need the tourists to come back so it’s good publicity for London.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/01/2021 01:31

@Diddlysquatty

Well I was just pissed off that I didn’t know about them and they weren’t on itv at midnight! Stayed up with the big kids til midnight only to get big Ben’s bongs and massively depressing headlines. Can’t believe I missed it on bbc! Just thought it was an Alicia keys music thing on there 🤦‍♀️
Me too 😢
