Argument over London fireworks

Not sure if this is the correct topic for this but I just would like some of your views/thoughts.

So this morning me and husband had a small disagreement about the London fireworks last night. Being from London my self, I love them it brings back childhood memories,I love what they resemble and how London does them and I thought last nights were great and done safely and secretly not causing crowding

He however completely disagrees with this. (He is not from London) he says they have rewarded the ignorant rule breakers who went out to still try and watch them and get a glimpse. (As well saw a video in Facebook where people were not social distanced and probably came from afar into London). I did argue the toss saying you dont know if these people live in Central London and went for a walk and its also good that London did have them for the millions of people who have listened to the rules and did stay home. He says it's not nessecaru a waste of money and he sees it as hospitality when thats closed why are they letting off a huge public firework display

Anyway...Its put me in a foul mood all day with him but then again his one of these people that has to have an awnser for every conversation and will gladly stick his point of view into anything you don't agree with . I love the man dearly but his fucked me off and he knows he has as his been trying to be all nice nice all day. So yeah what's your thoughts on the fireworks

OP posts:

Um, that was Captain Tom and a thumbs up Grin

Tier4billion · 01/01/2021 23:19

@Elephant4 it’s captain Tom

HmmSureJan · 01/01/2021 23:20

I thought that was Capt Tom wasn't it?

HmmSureJan · 01/01/2021 23:20

😆

FirstOfficerDouglas · 01/01/2021 23:21

Londoner here. Waste of money. Couldn't have seen them without breaking rules. Didn't know they were going to be on the telly. What was the point?? We are in T4. We were stuck in our house.

TfL is struggling and losing money, Hammersmith Bridge is closed and fucking up that part of West London, rail infrastructure and roads need improvement and so many small London businesses are going under and could have done with a lifeline - and we blow a million quid on fireworks FFS.

IEat · 01/01/2021 23:21

I’m a Londoner I hate the fireworks waste of money I even hate bonfire ones too
But I agree with your DH people were told stay in
BUT if they weren’t in display people wouldn’t have stopped and stared!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 01/01/2021 23:28

Rofl ( you don't see that on here much these days) at communist propoganda

And crying at the poster who mistook national treasure Captain Tom for that bloody berk Boris.

Sirius99 · 01/01/2021 23:30

After that large waste of money, I hope SK or any Londoners every complain about lack of money for policing, schools, NHS, hungry kids, etc, every again,

Lindy2 · 01/01/2021 23:31

I thought they were great. I loved the drone display. I thought it was really impressive and much better than fireworks.

The display actually jumped around different parts of London didn't it? Although you wouldn't have picked that up from the tv display because they did it quite seamlessly.

Part was at the Shard, part on Tower Bridge, part at Docklands and part at Wembley Stadium. These are actually all quite separate areas so even if people did stop to watch the different groups were actually miles apart.

LastTrainEast · 01/01/2021 23:33

I'm trying to work out why "Leavers" in particular would be "frothing at the BLM symbol"

It just sounds like an excuse to put the things you don't like in a sentence.

I like the the BLM fist symbol. I think it helps remind people what it's all about.

Tier4billion · 01/01/2021 23:34

@Sirius99you are aware that the 9million inhabitants of London didn’t put on the fireworks display right?

GabsAlot · 01/01/2021 23:39

it was all over london so there wouldnt be that many groups of people in one place

Sirius99 · 01/01/2021 23:39

Tier4billion, let’s see how many of them 9 million inhabitants remember SK wasting tax payers money at the upcoming vote

PawPawNoodle · 01/01/2021 23:41

Also a Londoner, born here (not that it makes much difference). I thought they were a waste of money and a kick in the teeth given SKs constant inane ramblings about needing more money, while simultaneously pissing £1.5m into a covert fireworks operation and giving himself a big pat on the back for thanking the NHS and recognising BLM (I'm sure both operations would rather just have had a chunk of the money rather than a drone show). Put that money into food banks, or into addressing homelessness and drug/alcohol services in the city, not literally set fire to it and shoot it into the sky when no one's watching.

Baconking · 01/01/2021 23:46

@Elephant4

I think the fireworks last night were communist propoganda tat.

Did anyone see the picture of Boris at his podium? What was that there for?

Haha!! You should have tried listening to the commentary so you knew what you were looking at!!

Grin Hilarious that you thought that was Boris at a podium

Davros · 01/01/2021 23:48

"Childhood memories" they only started in 2000 iirc (old gimmer!)

Saz12 · 01/01/2021 23:50

Big displays always seem like a waste of money to me. I’m Scrooge- miser-type though.

Moving the Edinburgh display to Stirling was well-publicised and could be seen from a huge area (topography and lack of light pollution helps!). But still a waste of money.

HmmSureJan · 01/01/2021 23:50

We didn't know it was happening. It was kept completely secret 🤷🏼‍♀️
JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/01/2021 23:52

I thought the fireworks had been done during the night in the preceding week.

Actually, I know they were.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2021 23:52

@Elephant4

You honestly thought that was Boris? Hahahaaaaaaaa!

Milkshake7489 · 01/01/2021 23:53

I'm with your husband, it's a complete waste of money.

bitheby · 02/01/2021 00:04

Hopefully they'll do the drones from now on. Has to be better for the environment.

Ponoka7 · 02/01/2021 07:56

It might have been kept a secret but people turned out just in case. This picture from the Hungerford Bridge and other pictures, makes a mockery of the bbqs split up by the Police in other low tier areas. As well as people going out in case the fireworks did happen, there was an anti lock down protest as well. So crowd dispersal wasn't happening.

Apparently the budget was still £3 million and none of it raised via ticket sales, as it is usually. If London has £3 million to spare, send it up North, because we certainly don't.

Argument over London fireworks
Heyahun · 02/01/2021 08:38

@Ponoka7 do you have an actual time stamped photo to show that it was actually taken at midnight on New Year’s Eve? Or any evidence ? Otherwise it’s just a photo from any time, anywhere 😂 people just go around sharing shite they found on Facebook without even knowing if it’s real

Also the fireworks were paid with council tax money apparently- why would London send their council tax earnings up to a different city 😂 it’s not how it works

dealornodealer · 02/01/2021 08:56

YANBU. I thought/hoped that they would do something on the quiet and they didn't disappoint. This year had to be marked in some way and I think the display was fab. Watched it online yesterday as was in bed by 11!

The people who had a hunch they might go ahead would have travelled to London regardless so not having them wouldn't have stopped people travelling anyway. I don't agree at all with them travelling though.

It's not a waste of money. It cheers people up and shows London off. Money well spent.
