Argument over London fireworks

Not sure if this is the correct topic for this but I just would like some of your views/thoughts.

So this morning me and husband had a small disagreement about the London fireworks last night. Being from London my self, I love them it brings back childhood memories,I love what they resemble and how London does them and I thought last nights were great and done safely and secretly not causing crowding

He however completely disagrees with this. (He is not from London) he says they have rewarded the ignorant rule breakers who went out to still try and watch them and get a glimpse. (As well saw a video in Facebook where people were not social distanced and probably came from afar into London). I did argue the toss saying you dont know if these people live in Central London and went for a walk and its also good that London did have them for the millions of people who have listened to the rules and did stay home. He says it's not nessecaru a waste of money and he sees it as hospitality when thats closed why are they letting off a huge public firework display

Anyway...Its put me in a foul mood all day with him but then again his one of these people that has to have an awnser for every conversation and will gladly stick his point of view into anything you don't agree with . I love the man dearly but his fucked me off and he knows he has as his been trying to be all nice nice all day. So yeah what's your thoughts on the fireworks

Calmandmeasured1 I'd love to hear more about why you think including BLM and the NHS is "woke" and now "you're not going to bother to watch the show"?
I'm used to seeing a spectacular London fireworks display set to great music and I enjoy that. I wasn't aware until after the event that there had even been a NYE display in London. I planned to iPlayer it to watch. However, after reading about it, I can't get interested in the show because it sounds as if it incorporates politicising events of the year. We get that all the time so it's just more of the boring same to me. I think it should just have been a fun celebration with lights, fireworks and music, as it usually is, without the inclusion of comments about anything. Just something that looks good and uplifts.

agododopushpineapple · 01/01/2021 22:47

I loved them (Londoner). Also they were a surprise so people wouldn’t have gone to watch them. Also not sure where you would go to actually watch at Wembley and the 02 - not easily accessible places really,

umpteennamechanges · 01/01/2021 22:48

Is there somewhere we can see them?

puptent · 01/01/2021 22:49

I thought they were pretty cool also. I think they weren't live though were they? They were done on a Tuesday night at like 3am. And at different locations.

I am in London and Sadiq teased us with emails beforehand - emphasising there was nothing going on outside (and no late night transport) but there was a 'special show' only on TV that we 'wouldn't want to miss'. I wish he'd said it was fireworks though as we just happened on it when we turned the TV on at midnight for the 'bongs'. I think more people would have watched (on TV) if they had known.

Tier4billion · 01/01/2021 22:51

@umpteennamechanges yes still on iplayer

callistography · 01/01/2021 22:52

I thought it was a disgusting, obscene waste of money. What a waste - here we are in the midst of a pandemic - let's basically get some money and set fire to it.
Oh. And whilst we're at it, let's put on a show that is very much a form of propaganda

It infuriated me.

This, I felt it was a bit political and a bit navel gazey... recordings of news readers going on about covid... I was shouting at the tv, please no more of it, I’m sick of bloody covid, can’t we just look forward to 2021 without setting the misery of 2020 to fireworks.
AlecTrevelyan006 · 01/01/2021 22:54

I thought it was cool

Canwecancel2020 · 01/01/2021 22:55

Can’t you just agree to disagree with your husband though OP

LouiseTrees · 01/01/2021 22:55

Scotland did their fireworks outside Stirling at the Wallace monument rather than in Edinburgh so as to avoid people flocking to see them so I’m with your DH.

Tier4billion · 01/01/2021 22:58

@LouiseTrees the majority of the London ones were in very inaccessible locations.

Freddiefox · 01/01/2021 23:00

Disgusting waste of money.

puptent · 01/01/2021 23:02

(I'm guessing my council tax was used to pay for them.. Am happy with that).

Heyahun · 01/01/2021 23:03

If your so sick of hearing about Covid then why are you watching bbc on New Year’s Eve - watch something else 😂 @Canwecancel2020

I couldn't agree more. I was/am a staunch remainer btw.
ConfusedcomMum · 01/01/2021 23:03

I'm a Londoner and they did us proud. Emotional but uplifting as well. Have a read of the comments on the YouTube link below, people around the world thought it was perfect.

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/01/2021 23:06

We live within sight of the London Eye and Big Ben and there were definitely some fireworks happening around there at midnight.

Londonmummy66 · 01/01/2021 23:06

There were a lot of fireworks all down the river - we are nowhere near Greenwich but were able to stand on our front doorstep and watch a big aerial display. I thought that it was very clever to have spread them out a lot this year.

MintyMabel · 01/01/2021 23:06

but then again his one of these people that has to have an awnser for every conversation and will gladly stick his point of view into anything you don't agree with

How dare he disagree with you, eh? Isn’t he allowed to have an opinion?

I’m meh about the London fireworks, I live in Scotland, Edinburgh’s were cancelled because they didn’t want crowds, but they did some at Stirling and televised them and as far as I can tell it didn’t cause any problem. It felt good to watch. Sure it’s a ‘waste’ of money, but that is true every year. There are people going hungry every year, but they still set them off. If I were a homeless and I saw them going off, I’d wonder if a fraction of that cost could help me.

Not sure why you would feel so down he disagreed with you over something minor.

Elephant4 · 01/01/2021 23:09

I think the fireworks last night were communist propoganda tat.

Did anyone see the picture of Boris at his podium? What was that there for?

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2021 23:10

You are entitled to your opinion, why isn't your husband entitled to his?

Elephant4 · 01/01/2021 23:11

Boris's attempt at firework propoganda

Dddccc · 01/01/2021 23:12

Think it was a complete waste of money and with London being in tier 4 and cases sky high ppl should not have been hanging around in crowds and I have seen quite a few images off them on and police shut down 2 raves too in London so I agree with your other half
