Name change as i'm so ashamed

i'm overweight by a lot, and i've decided that this year i will finally get in shape.
It's been a day into the new year and i've already binged at least 2000 calories with chocolate and crisps and sweets Sad
I feel so pathetic.
Please help

When I say “be kind” to yourself I mean don’t beat yourself up, just wasting energy which can be used in a more useful/pro-active way.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 01/01/2021 16:23

OP, don't focus on how 'impossible' it is because you have 'already' bunged and snacked etc etc.

Get rid of the stuff. Give it away or bin it.

Then get yourself set up with food that you enjoy, but that is healthy and filling.

If you have a lot to lose then slow and steady is best, I think. You can make healthy eating part of your lifestyle and enjoy it, rather than 'dieting'.

The first week is the hardest because you are used to grabbing biscuits, toast, whatever.

But it only takes a few days to get out of the habit.

Then, each achievement, each pound lost, will give you the motivation for the next one. And your appetite for portion size naturally shrinks.

Honestly, I took it so easy, losing roughly a pound a week since May, but it makes such a difference.

Healthy food, reasonable portions. No snacks, unless healthy / plant based. Enjoy what you eat - food is not your enemy.

tttigress · 01/01/2021 16:23

One key for me is not allowing sweets, chocolate, cakes etc. Into the house.

Hollyhead · 01/01/2021 16:24

Drink a couple of pints of water over the rest of the day, have a light healthy supper and head out now god a 20 min walk. Then try and do better tomorrow. 🙂

Bluewavescrashing · 01/01/2021 16:26

OP the date is meaningless really. Don't worry, just move on. Your next meal could be nutritious and if you try to focus on caring for your body, treating it with nourishing food that you enjoy, that might help to change habits?

seriousandloyal · 01/01/2021 16:26

Keep trying, tomorrow is another day xx good luck.

ObliviouslyIgnorant · 01/01/2021 16:27

I have a different addiction but you have to take it a minute at a time.
So, say for e.g. you're consuming 3000 calories a day now.
Can you make a plan for tomorrow that is 2800 calories?
Plan your meals and snacks.
Then maintain that for a few days and maybe start a 10 minute walk a day.
Try to include healthy foods if you can. Frozen or tinned veg if you're not in the humour for cooking.
Then reduce it gradually every 3 days by 200 calories.
Up the exercise by 2 minutes a day.
Nothing that's worth having comes without a bit of effort.

Inpersuitofhappiness · 01/01/2021 16:27

Try not to beat yourself up, the thing is if you do that, you're more likely to continue on in this cycle.

What can you do to make the rest of today better? What are you doing? What are you planning on eating?

I'm losing weight (or bloody trying- over Christmas i out on 6lb which has put me back into morbid obesity)
I find that the smaller things make all the difference.
Give yourself a fighting chance, concentrate on being well hydrated, try to make more sensible choices with food. Incorporate a little bit of extra exercise each day, and watch your portion sizes. Do these things as a start, then incorporate more steps as you go on.

Please don't feel like you've let yourself down. Its new years day, plenty of people enjoy a few treats on this day. Enjoy that you've had them.

Mylittleturkeysandwich · 01/01/2021 16:29

I've probably got about 7/8 stone to loose. I don't intend to do it all this year but I'd like to make a good start. Today however is not that day, today we are having a second Christmas dinner!

GoneScone · 01/01/2021 16:32

I'd recommend watching some James Smith videos. He changed my whole perception on weight loss, he crusades against fat loss fads and diets with a no-bullshit approach. Plus he's fit and funny!

MaskingForIt · 01/01/2021 16:32

@tttigress

One key for me is not allowing sweets, chocolate, cakes etc. Into the house.
This is key for me. That is what people mean about having a healthy lifestyle rather than doing a short-term diet.

If you don’t have crap in the house and aren’t eating it on a regular basis, it means if you are out with a friend you can have a piece of cake without feeling bad about it, because you’ll only be having it once a week, not every day.

saltandvinegar1 · 01/01/2021 16:34

I'm
In the same boat
Day after Xmas I've started going on the treadmill just one mile. I know it's not a lot but it takes me 16 mins. I have been doing it daily and I want to cut sugar out I need to loose like 20 kg

oopsiedaisie1 · 01/01/2021 16:35

Firstly stop the guilt , it's so hard but don't feel guilty . It's fine. Draw a line start again. I have huge battles with food , I use it as a crutch for everything . In oct my doc said if I didn't get my stomach problem under control it was going to get serious , so then I thought no, it's stops now . I have been using my fitness pal to track calories and walking 10000 steps a day and I'm a stone down. My stomach feels better too! You've got this! Smile

SharedLife · 01/01/2021 16:35

Some stark facts are that 95% of dieters regain the weight they lost within 5 years and 40% of those people gain more weight than when they started.

Have a think about what benefits you're expecting from weight loss and is there any way you could achieve them without a restrictive diet? For almost everyone restriction leads to binging. Just the thought of starting the diet and you've experienced this. Its totally understandable! Its such a basic instinct to eat enough, if you've dieted before your mind is fighting the coming famine. Its protection.

Eating enough, sleeping enough moving your body for fun rather than punishing it for over eating, wearing the clothes you want, having the hairstyle you've always wanted, and most importantly accepting and loving yourself dont have to wait until you've got to a magic size that society has told you will make you worthy. You're 100% worthy right this moment.

Please be kind to yourself @justatealot Flowers

Lots of good advice on here OP.
Today is not the best day to start anything like a diet .

But :
Don't buy the foods that you know are your weakness . Can you substitue chocolate for wine gums or marshmallows ? Not so easy to over indulge but still sweet
Hot chocolate drink instead of a bar of Dairy Milk

Discard the need to "treat" yourself or want something (through gritted teeth , I hate this phrase) "Naughty But Nice"

Break habits . Don't have a biscuit with your coffee or your favourite TV soap.
Don't eat standing up
Put everything on a plate - if you have to get a plate out and wash up /put away it might put you off

Have a glass of water - your brain will tell you you're hungry when you might be dehydrated .
Brush your teeth instead of eating a sweet

My personal mind trick- I hate hate hate chocolate lime . So if I drink Roses Lime Cordial or 7-Up I cannot have chocolate . The thought of chocolate + lime in my stomach makes me retch .

I have been overweight most of my life and am seriously addicted to sugar and always have been.
I have tried every diet going, every slimming club where you pay lots of money to be told you are fat 😊
Last year I went to the USA as we do most years and for the first time it really hit me how many people who looked to be my age were on scooters and on some form of walking aid
I have altered my diet and have lost 3 stone since March , but eating all this rich stuff over Christmas has made me feel lethargic and look puffy again .
Low carb works for me as does mild exercise and drinking lots of fluids ..for me sugar free cordial helps if you aren’t keen on water
We don’t have much rubbish left from Christmas as I didn’t buy a lot

How about gathering all your unopened in date food up and putting in the local food bank trolley in your local supermarket?

Marmunia1975 · 01/01/2021 16:37

Drink water and exercise. You will feel more energized. I don’t feel good if I don’t get my 5km or 10km in.

Covidpleasegoaway · 01/01/2021 16:39

I recommend intermittent fasting. Obviously it doesn't mean you can binge chocolate and sweets in your eating window, but makes you more mindful about what you eat and less likely to snack. There are some good apps you can download and this really helped me stay litigated. Start with 16:8 and see how it goes.

Covidpleasegoaway · 01/01/2021 16:39

I always think that anyone who starts a diet on the 1st of January is setting themselves for failure. It's still "the festive" period. Just enjoy the next few days and maybe starts to cut down on Monday?
TrailingLobelias · 01/01/2021 16:43

Start again tomorrow. It's a long term commitment so one day, even a whole week, here and there won't make a difference in the long run. Or try weightwatchers so you have some camaraderie.

Would you consider seeking professional advice if you have an excessively emotional relationship with food and your body? Lots of wonderful people are overweight. It's just bad for your health. You'll like how you look more when you lose weight which is something to look forward to but you shouldn't hate yourself now.

Cam2020 · 01/01/2021 16:43

It's so much easier to start when all the goodies and treats are done.

Please try and come at the these positive changes from a place of love for yourself, not hate.

louisejxxx · 01/01/2021 16:43

You can only start diets on a Monday!! That's when mine is starting, and I too have spent the day eating choc & crisps.

Don't be too hard on yourself OP - these are mad times we're living in!

Workingmummyy · 01/01/2021 16:44

OMG!!!

Literally considered posting this.

I started today. Done 2 out of 4 shakes. Then picked up a nandos.

Now i just feel like what a waste of space i am

Foghead · 01/01/2021 16:47

Are you tired today op?
I’m tired and then crave easy food and sugar.
To diet well, you need to not be sleep deprived and have the energy to be organised.
