Name change as i'm so ashamed

i'm overweight by a lot, and i've decided that this year i will finally get in shape.
It's been a day into the new year and i've already binged at least 2000 calories with chocolate and crisps and sweets Sad
I feel so pathetic.
Please help

Oh yes, and if you want to mark the start of the year somehow (although you know logically it's just a day like any other, and any other date is fine to start dieting on too!) why not go out for a ten minute brisk walk? You'll feel better!

HyacynthBucket · 01/01/2021 15:58

Don't deprive yourself OP. What about deciding to have three proper meals each day, and leave out everything else. That is doable, and healthy, and you will feel better, physically and mentally. Just make sure those meals are really nice and plentiful. Finish off and leave it to the next meal. Have a good year in 2021.

nanbread · 01/01/2021 15:59

Don't beat yourself up, it's a hard time to start new habits. Dark, cold, depressing.

All you need to do is to pause and think, "do I need this?" before you put it in your mouth.

Really easy to say, much harder to do - but not impossible.

Have zero choc / crisps in house once they're gone, and buy lovely yummy healthier things to eat instead.

oakleaffy · 01/01/2021 15:59

“If you don’t buy it.. you can’t eat it”

Advice a friend gave.

Don’t buy that addictive high salt and fat stuff.

It is a mindset.

You CAN. Do it..
But I have just smashed 5 small co op fairy cakes,
Would have been six, but dropped one on the ground.
Foxes will enjoy it.

Twillow · 01/01/2021 16:00

Funnily enough, I was listening to an audiobook last night and heard something which seems very apt to you.
It wnet something like this.
If you say to yourself, for example, "I am not going to eat unhealthy food ever again" you are setting yourself up for failure - you are setting your inner saboteiur a challenge that it finds irresistible to all your inner demons telling you you can't do it, you're too fat to lose weight, you have no willpower etc.
So, the idea is to ACCEPT that you, as a human being, will make missteps along your journey and rephrase your goal in a way that accepts life IS often difficult and people are NOT perfect (including you!).
So more like this:
"I am trying to resist the delicious crisps and chocolate that I enjoy."
And then enjoy your successful moments, rather than detest yourself for your less successful ones.
Good luck!

Lemonjlo · 01/01/2021 16:02

Oh me too OP. Try not to beat yourself up and put too much pressure on one day and feel the whole ‘new year new me’ thing.

I’ve been so unmotivated recently, it’s cold, haven’t been seeing anyone or making the effort to look nice, eating way too much rubbish and I’ve stopped exercising.
I need to stop buying chocolate and crisps as I have no willpower and get back into exercising daily.

Maybe you could try and cut out 1 thing, or replace one meal a day with something low calorie and healthy? And do a joe wicks workout or something similar every/every other day? They’re only half an hour long- I noticed when I was doing this daily I’d lost the weight on my hips... but I’ve put it all back on again plus more over the last few months Sad

AlwaysCheddar · 01/01/2021 16:02

Download couch to 5k and start this pm.

justatealot · 01/01/2021 16:02

Thank you so much. Brilliant idea for starting on monday btw.
I'm 5"2 and 180 lbs and i'm hoping to lose at least 30 pounds this year so I think that's why I rushed into it so fast.
Thanks all Flowers

Exercise is a huge help. Am on a walk now.. along with hoards of others who seem to have same idea..

I swear Covid has made people walk more..
If you live in a rural area you can walk in relative seclusion, which is bliss.

WitchDancer · 01/01/2021 16:05

If you had a bunch of 7 roses you wouldn't throw them all out because one had died.

You've had one bad day, but there's another 6 days in the week to pull it back.

Be kind to yourself.

NotQuiteUsual · 01/01/2021 16:06

It's new years day, you're allowed to binge a bit. Plus it's not like you can undo it and it was yummy right? When you're hard on yourself, you'll struggle to loose weight. Weight loss is a form of self care and self love, so try to think of it that way, rather than denying yourself treats as punishment for being overweight. Not everyday is going to be perfect, you're only human and you're a wonderful person who does not deserve being called disgusting by anyone

Wereeaglesdare · 01/01/2021 16:07

Hey nobody starts on the 1st the 2nd is the right day for dieting! Have you tried alternate day fasting. I am going back to doing this it really works just every other day don't eat or eat up to 500calories. Then on the other days eat what you like. There is also something called one meal a day fasting which is just when u eat within a two hour window of an evening or whenever you want to and then it is almost impossible to not be in a deficit when you calculate weekly calories. These measures are extreme and so they are not for everyone but good for a quick result and much more a lifestyle change. Not eating also helps to repair cells in your body and makes you feel more focused clears your mind as of tomorrow I will be fasting drinking nothing but water for a good three days at least just to reset my body. Please don't be disgusted in yourself it is so hard and it is really about your whole lifestyle don't look at it as in a day by day think of the whole year some days you are going to eat cake and chocolate and crap but balance it and move atleast 10,000 steps a day then you are burning alot if you are overweight. Goodluck I am going on the same journey!

ktp100 · 01/01/2021 16:09

I never jump back on the Health Wagon until a good few days after New Year - too much shit left in the house to get rid of!

The first few days are always the worst so is it a good idea to start when your cupboards are full of Kettle Chips & Quality Street?

Give yourself a break. The guilt is worse for your body than the calories you ate!!

Get rid of the shite (binning the stragglers if it's getting ridiculous) pick a new day to start and BE FUCKING NICE TO YOURSELF!!!!

Nobody ever changed for the better from a place of self hatred!!

Barmyfarmy · 01/01/2021 16:09

Go gently, OP. baby steps. Celebrate the better choices and learn from the others. Don't pressure yourself to go from your current/previous diet to suddenly munching on kale and nothing else overnight Grin

Maybe try to set a meal plan for the week- plan it how you would've before Christmas and then see how you can make a few adaptations to add healthier choices e.g. swap chips with roasted veg or add an apple to your lunch.

I found I lost weight best when I made better choices, rather than only making perfect healthy decisions. I'd give myself plenty of choice to have with lunch and know I'd only be hungry for one or two (i.e. a sandwich with crisps and apple, or soup with bread or carrot sticks) and I'd push myself to choose the best option (so apple instead of crisps, carrot instead of bread). You don't have to eliminate everything you enjoy or everything unhealthy, just cut back.

I also found having a banana or some carrot sticks before I binged on chocolate meant I wasn't hungry enough to eat much choc, if any at all.

SingToTheSky · 01/01/2021 16:09

New year is a crappy high pressure time to start fresh and day one can be so tough because you’re tired, there’s the anticlimax from Christmas and possibly still loads of party food left. TBH this year I feel flatter than ever because there’s so much uncertainty and the horrible stuff from 2020 is far from over. It’s totally understandable to have struggled today. I have written off today in advance, I’m setting up my bullet journal from today but I’ve made peace with the fact many of my habit tracker squares will be left blank. I can be very black or white in my thinking (I’m autistic) and it’s a big step for me to not feel like I’m writing myself off because I’m tired and grumpy today.

There are lots of lovely threads for weight loss, I’m now on a “no specific diet” one which is nice!

I’m not one for motivational videos usually but a kind MNer shared this the other day and the fifth habit is a perfect one for me - allow yourself to start over multiple times. It’s about seven minutes in.

Cheeseandwin5 · 01/01/2021 16:09

@justatealot

Please dont beat yourself up, you can still save the day by doing some exercise.
I think alot of ppl will want to get into shape and find it difficult.
I have decided to start in February, I think there is still alot of left over junkfood in January and I dont intend to waste it. I also am feeling lazy and lethargic and dont want to start cooking today so will pick at left overs.

D4rwin · 01/01/2021 16:09

Doesn't matter when you start. You just have to start. Small wins that become habits first. Then onwards and upwards. Best wishes Flowers

Tal45 · 01/01/2021 16:12

My big advice would be not to give up everything you like but to reduce your portion sizes for every meal and make some easy changes. Replace white bread with wholemeal and white pasta and rice with whole meal. Always have some healthy snacking food available and try not to buy any unhealthy food. Eat food that's going to fill you up and stop you feeling hungry or wanting to snack - ie don't have grapefruit for breakfast, have a small bowl of porridge. Up the amount of veggies you eat and be adventurous with them. Try to go for a two or three mile walk every day. Don't give yourself a hard time for today though because guess what you'll want to do if you make yourself feel bad - you'll want to make yourself feel better by eating a load of crap xxx

daisypond · 01/01/2021 16:13

Forget about today. In future, just don’t buy chocolate and sweets and crisps. We just don’t buy those generally ever. We bought ourselves chocolates for Christmas and they are yummy, but we never buy sweets or crisps. Find other things to reward yourself with that aren’t food. For years I thought I could never give up sugar in tea, but eventually I cut it down bit by bit, putting less in each time, and now I never have sugar in tea. It took about six weeks to be completely over it. It would taste horrid now.

MaskingForIt · 01/01/2021 16:14

@livpool
I think in general we all need to be kinder to ourselves though xx

“Being kind to ourselves” is what has led to the obesity epidemic though. Everyone thinks they deserve a “treat” and some “choccies” just for completing basic adult tasks. Self-restraint seems to be a thing of the past.

OP - today’s binge isn’t great, but tomorrow is a new day. Use today to rid your house of junk and go to the shops tomorrow and buy yourself some healthy food.

Bangable · 01/01/2021 16:16

Honestly, NY Day is not the day to start being healthy. Start on Monday and stop being so hard on yourself Flowers

I usually eat healthily and I'm going to do dry Jan. Today I've eaten endless crisps, mince pies, ice cream, toast, crumpets and I'm cooking a v rich risotto for dinner which we will eat with garlicky cheesy bread. I'm also nursing a hangover and have a glass of red in my hand while I stuff yet more crisps into my mouth.

By Monday all the crappy food will have been eaten by me go in the bin and I will start afresh, I'm totally unwavering on that, very determined to get back on the health wagon but for now, I'm enjoying myself Grin I suggest you do the same. Cheers Wine

HelplessProcrastinator · 01/01/2021 16:16

I am 3 stone and disgusted with myself. A few pounds heaver than 12 months ago but I have limited the damage with exercise, started running in April to replace my classes that were all shut down. Exercise doesn't make you lose much weight on it's own but does help your mental health. I'm giving veganuary a whirl as I just need a reset of my eating habits. Butter and cheese are a massive trigger for me so by cutting these out I hope to regulate better. I find calorie counting utterly depressing and totally bored with Slimming World (which does work if you follow it properly). Be kind to yourself OP. We live with cheap and plentiful high calorie food and we are fighting our own instincts to store calories which is hard. Plus there isn't much else to occupy us at the moment. Draw a line under today and move on.

Fairnair · 01/01/2021 16:17

OP be kind to yourself, as other posters have said trying to do everything at once sets you up to fail. Pick one thing to focus on this week, for example eat a healthy breakfast everyday, or go for a short walk every day etc. This time last year I weighed heavier than you approx. 235lbs, I have lost 60lb. Still have a way to go to be within healthy weight range, but just taking one day at a time. Good luck x

TooTrueToBeGood · 01/01/2021 16:17

Don't diet, change your lifestyle. Traditional dieting is generally not much fun so hard to stick to (thus short term) and you inevitably pile the weight back on when you fall off the diet. Look to change your diet to healthier foods that you enjoy eating and find enjoyable ways to increase your activity levels. It might (though not always) take a little longer to see meaningful results than a "diet" but it will be far easier to sustain in the long term. See it as a marathon rather than a sprint.

Also, especially if you manage to increase your exercise significantly, let the mirror be your guide, not the scales. All too often we talk about losing weight when actually we really want to reduce body fat. You can reduce body fat but not necessarily lose the equivalent weight due to increases in lean muscle and water. Going by weight alone can demotivate you when you are actually making progress.

Finally and most importantly, love yourself holistically. The skin you are in is not what defines you as a person. The true value you bring to your friends and family comes from what is in your heart and your mind, not what is around your waist.

Mrsclaus5 · 01/01/2021 16:20

You sound like you just need some motivation.
I look on Insta at the before and after photos. I also made a list of the reasons why I wanted to lose weight. It did help me, granted I'm only on day 4 haha but still..
