To think we should bring back the clapping

We seem to be in a similar position to March and the NHS is coming under serious strain. Aibu to think now is the time to bring back the clapping?

I’m looking forward to a streetwide champagne pop and party when it’s declared to be all over 🍾

ShrikeAttack · 31/12/2020 00:44

@Wheresmykimchi 'disablist chat?'

Eh?

NYEPOPPER1 · 31/12/2020 00:45

@GlomOfNit

OP is hilarious! I can recommend clicking on 'see all posts in this thread' to read all OP's responses in one block.

OP, you have been well and truly ratio'd, but you gave me a laugh, so Flowers for that.

Actually support has recently doubled and continues to increase I wouldn’t count it out also remember mumsnet is not at all reparesentitive

Thickos.

Unecessary, nasty word.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 31/12/2020 00:45

No thank you, been there done that. I bet you were one of them out there jingling bells on Christmas eve too.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 31/12/2020 00:46

Fiancé and l are nurses. We hate the fucking clapping. Just pay us properly and fund healthcare! Way more useful

Brighterthansunflowers · 31/12/2020 00:47

Clapping does nothing for the NHS staff. It’s just virtue signalling and buys into the stupid “blitz spirit” narrative

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 31/12/2020 00:47

Nope nope and nope. It just became a "who can make the most noise" event. And if course you have to post on SM that you've made a noise or how will anyone know you care?

The people I know who made the most fuss about doing it, and berated anyone who didn't join in, are the ones who have bent, stretched and broken all the rules.

Thedogscollar · 31/12/2020 00:48

@NYEPOPPER1
NHS staff here. Clapping means nothing.

It didn't help me do my job under extremely difficult circumstances.

It didn't stop me working 12.5hr shifts with no break.

It didn't make me feel valued as a health care professional.

It didn't boost my morale.

If you really want to show support for the NHS write to your MP to lobby for the NHS to be properly funded, not just so that I can benefit from a pay rise ( cos that ain't happening any time soon) but to benefit our
working conditions, equipment shortages, staff shortages, waiting lists and patient experience.

Clapping comes across as patronising and yes it was initiated by a grateful member of the public but was hijacked by this ridiculous PM to suit his agenda.

Teddy1970 · 31/12/2020 00:50

No way, pointless in my opinion.

ShrikeAttack · 31/12/2020 00:51

Umm.

'Less intellectual peeps'

'Fewer brain workers'

'Stupidos'

??

helloxhristmas · 31/12/2020 00:51

Oh ffs no. Donate some money if you want to, virtue signalling is just vomit inducing.

sessell · 31/12/2020 00:52

What a horrible, patronising attitude OP. 'No we can't afford / they don't deserve a pay rise, but another nice pat on the head / clap would be lovely for them.' 100% sure you're a Tory.

Snowpatrolling · 31/12/2020 00:52

Nope, I’m a community carer and was so embarrassing being hollered at leaving clients.
I’m just doing my job and need a pay rise more than I need a clap!!

BungleandGeorge · 31/12/2020 00:52

I’m afraid the whole ‘no money for increased NHS wages’ just doesn’t wash anymore. Billions on unusable PPE, test and trace that doesn’t even contact people and all the other many back handers. MPs inflation busting pay rise and enormous expenses. We all need to pay a bit more tax and reward all of those who have kept the country running at increased risk and inconvenience to themselves- teachers, NHS, armed forces, police, bin men (not an exhaustive list!). These groups are not millionaires, the money isn’t going to be squirrelled away into an offshore tax haven, they’re on PAYE so ‘hiding’ income isn’t easy. What will happen is that it will get spent in shops, restaurants, pubs etc which is a good thing all round for our economy.

ReesMoggsGlasses · 31/12/2020 00:52

Ain't got no time for clapping, be too busy home schooling whilst working

Silversilly · 31/12/2020 00:54

@formerbabe

No
No. Ridiculous idea, from the beginning
PhoebeSnow · 31/12/2020 00:54

No definitely not, a better idea would be to repay NHS workers by making sure they have the equipment they need and paying them more money

MrsSugar · 31/12/2020 00:56

No. For the love of god just no.

The first time was a nice gesture then it just became an a piss take really. I work for nhs n I know ppl r on their knees. We need proper pay n proper funding. No amount of clapping can provide that. Staff are being shafted here n a lot of the public out clapping were the same public not following the rules Envy

Recycledblonde · 31/12/2020 00:56

I found it really embarrassing although I appreciated the sentiment behind it. I’m not terribly keen on all the freebies we get either, we’re not the ones who are going to lose our jobs and possibly our homes. I’d far rather we got the vaccine quickly as we go in and out of peoples homes and care homes so it will protect the vulnerable. I’ve had covid, almost certainly caught at work, but I’ll still have the jab as soon as possible.

ShrikeAttack · 31/12/2020 01:01

I'm fucking 'disabilist' my DD has ASD. I don't play silly games though.

manicinsomniac · 31/12/2020 01:02

Nooooo.

My village was practically naming and shaming people who didn't come out and clap (ok, they weren't literally but the facebook page was extremely ... vocal ... about those who did not take part). It wasn't about the NHS, it was about looking good in front of the niehgbours.

The first time I thought it was a sweet gesture. After that - absolutely not.

Mulhollandmagoo · 31/12/2020 01:02

Unfortunately the money isn’t there to do that I don’t know why people don’t/can’t understand that

Boris?? Is that you?? 😂

He can find money, he can cream a bit from his disgustingly overpaid and underworked MP's.

But in all honesty, the best way to support NHS staff at the moment is to stick rigidly to the guidance and do as much as you can to stop the spread, that will reduce pressure on them more than anything

Smokeahontas · 31/12/2020 01:03

I’d love to clap the people breaking the rules round the back of the head.

With a blunt instrument.

manicinsomniac · 31/12/2020 01:07

But I'm sorry your post went this way, OP. I know a lot of people thought the clapping was really important.

I once made the mistake of going for my 'daily walk' at around 7:30 on a Thursday. Had to walk down the middle of the road on my way back because the pavements were lined with people clapping nobody - it was like a cross between a really awkward solo lap of victory for having done nothing (I don't work for the NHS) and a walk of shame for being out on a walk instead of clapping.
