This is for the person who asked if her husband was also lied to. The video seems to answer this.

Fizzydrinks123 · 03/01/2021 14:49

well said Ms Hedgehog

sandandso · 03/01/2021 19:55

And it was Jennifer Aniston's grandparents who changed the surname to Aniston. It was quite common a few generations ago for immigrants to do that. More about wanting to fit in than creating an "identity" to show off about.

sandandso · 03/01/2021 19:56

Sorry, I clearly hadn't refreshed this thread in ages!

stairway · 03/01/2021 22:58

If she’s a Spanish speaker then that’s what she is and she can choose to use that language instead English if she prefers that’s not dependent on ethnicity. If people discriminate on her based on that then that’s her lived experience, she says she cannot control the accent. She could have been just as famous on social media without all this lying if she used her real identity. She didn’t because I suspect it was because of her own identity / psychological issues. I don’t think her behaviour was done to deliberately to harm anyone else. I don’t think it has even harmed anyone tbh so I don’t agree with the media witch hunt. The daily mail were publishing her tax form today. I think it’s almost a bit bullying to be honest. I don’t agree with trans people being hounded either if they are ‘ outed’. I don’t think we have to accept people’s identities if we don’t agree with them nor should we be amending birth certificates to pander to them. However the hounding and ridiculing something that might be psychological is wrong.

Cheeserton · 03/01/2021 23:18

Can't control her accent? She very clearly can in her lengthy, rambling, recent video.

Come off it. She's being caught blatantly lying. Repeatedly saying she was from Spain or allowing that lie to propagate. Brought up bilingual? How? None of her Boston schoolfriends think she was remotely Spanish and none of the dates fit for spending huge swathes of time in Spain if you look at her parents' biographies. It's just all bollocks.

Why didn't she just say that she really loves Spain and Spanish? Sure, give the kids the names if you like that. But people don't like being lied to so stupidly and pointlessly.

wetasstenalady · 03/01/2021 23:21

She has always come across as a highly narcissistic woman

stairway · 03/01/2021 23:36

She clear has deep psychological issues though, this isn’t a normal thing to do. If you look at the other people who also try change their race/identity to the same extent they do tend to be a bit fucked up. If you look at Michael Jackson not only did he make himself white he also identified as a child. This of course does not excuse his behaviour.
Her lying was so consistent despite threats of being ‘outed’ that I don’t think she lied just to increase her instagram following. I suspect it’s more due to psychological issues stemming from childhood.

italianbreezeyday · 04/01/2021 08:13

@stairway I have to say you have changed my thinking on this

Initially I thought she was ridiculous and attention seeking and she "asked" for this ridicule - I actually feel sorry for her now given your perspectives, it's really sad actually.

HeronLanyon · 04/01/2021 08:59

stairway I too took a moment to think about Spanish professor father etc. Oh dear - what a mess no matter how it all came to be.

HeronLanyon · 04/01/2021 09:01

‘Spanish language’ that is obviously - not that he is Spanish.

IcedPurple · 04/01/2021 09:04

Sorry, that's utter nonsense. How could she possibly have a 'Spanish' accent when she was born and raised in Boston and has never even lived in Spain?

She could have been just as famous on social media without all this lying if she used her real identity

But she began the faux 'Spanish' thing before she married Alec Baldwin and tried to become a 'thing' on social media. She started calling herself 'Hilaria' as a yoga teacher, and her New York studio was called 'Vida' so she was already pushing her 'Spanish' persona years ago. Yoga is a competitive business so she probably thought being 'Spanish' gave her an edge over being a WASP from Boston.

As for the 'hounding', she chose to live her life in public so why wouldn't her lies get the same profile?

Liverbird77 · 04/01/2021 09:06

@IcedPurple my son was born in Manchester and is being raised here too. I can assure you that he speaks Spanish with a perfect accent!

Not sure what this has to do with the subject in hand. I don't think anyone disagrees that "Hilaria" speaks excellent Spanish, but that doesn't make her Spanish or give her the right to 'identity' as such.

Fizzydrinks123 · 04/01/2021 10:01

Her dad isn't a professor in Spanish - he studied Spanish Literature in the US at University and then went on to be an Attorney in US.

I've seen his own bio he wrote a few years ago on why he retired to Majorca saying he loves Spanish mealtimes and the relaxed way of life - ie. same reason lots of UK people retire to Spain.

The time he spent in Madrid studying was 3 months - but was unable to study there due to Franco regime problems so was making friends and travelling around Europe. I spent longer in Madrid when I was an au-pair - he speaks Spanish with US accent etc. and the family all speak English to one another in Spain, not Spanish - they have a second language they've learned, but it isn't the language they're natural with.

There's a clip of AB few months ago saying his children go to an immersive Spanish speaking school - it's an expensive hobby they've chosen which may help in the future with career prospects, but it isn't because they have a history of speaking Spanish in their family - they have a history of an expensive, time consuming hobby of learning Spanish.

Same as Nigella Lawson isn't and has never claimed to be Italian - speaks Italian, lived in Italy for a year, children's names reflect that etc

HeronLanyon · 04/01/2021 10:24

fizzy noted. Grin

Fizzydrinks123 · 04/01/2021 10:30

Heron - sorry not correcting you as such, just for someone else reading as that's how people like Hilaria blur the truth - fudging half truths and leaving things ambiguous and then blaming others when they've interpreted it differently. She's an intelligent woman playing make believe in public, so knows what she's doing.

There is no doubt psychological issues at play, but that's the same with lots of people that create a public persona for themselves with no discernible talent. There are lots of yoga teachers out there - that's for sure, not so many that want to publish photos of themselves in their underwear with legs round their head balancing a baby etc.... it is attention seeking behaviour.

The issue is: does it help people with identity issues such as Hilaria to play along with them, or is it making it worse?

HeronLanyon · 04/01/2021 10:51

Fully agree. Was just interesting that I had maybe even internalised that her dad was ‘Spanish (Lang) professor’ or read some inaccuracy somewhere.
Crazy situation.

CrisisManagement · 04/01/2021 11:19

Those who think this is no big deal, should watch Clementine Ford's stories on Instagram about Hilary. She explains very well why this kind of appropriation is problematic.

As a strange aside, does anyone remember Kim Basinger (the first Mrs Baldwin) being described as part Cherokee throughout the 90s? Her daughter Ireland has also spoken of their Cherokee ancestry. Anyway, out of interest, I was Googling this and this site seems to suggest that it cannot be verified.... ethnicelebs.com/kim-basinger

HeronLanyon · 04/01/2021 11:21

Yes. And Kathleen Turners Cuban accent mini flurry of interest some years ago.

LemonBreeland · 04/01/2021 18:28

Hilarias whole life on Instagram is fake. She makes it look like she is a super mommy looking after all 5 DC alone, but she has 2 nannies. She has been honest in the past and said she has nannies but her posts read very differently, like struggling to take a shower as the baby wouldnt be put down etc.

stairway · 06/01/2021 12:26

Fizzydrinks123 I’ve been thinking a lot about this particular case, probably too much tbh. It seems her father also has an obsession with Spain whilst she was growing up although never pretended to be Spanish. She had anorexia and bulimia which causes body dysmorphia where the person doesn’t recognise what they are seeing in the mirror. She then marries a person old enough to be her father who encourages her / is turned on by her pretending to be Spanish. She becomes convinced she is actually Spanish to the extent she looses the ability to speak English. That’s how I see it. I think you’re right indulging someone in their fantasies is not healthy, however I think it was up to her family and husband to have gently said to her that she doesn’t need a false identity, that her actual identity is perfectly good.

Ballstothis148

I had a Portuguese pen pal who had blue eyes... am I dreaming that Celts first came from Spain...?

I heard so too...

My mum is from a part of southern India where a lot of Portuguese people lived.

Bluey - green eyes are very common there. My children managed to inherit them. They are beautiful, lucky things!

Excuse me while I go weep for all the ugly, unlucky, brown-eyed children! Hmm

Cheeserton · 07/01/2021 10:57

my son was born in Manchester and is being raised here too. I can assure you that he speaks Spanish with a perfect accent!

LOL... And when he speaks English , does he put on a fake accent as a result? Because if so, tell him to pack it in.

MsHedgehog · 07/01/2021 12:19

@stairway I do think you may be giving her more credit than due. It may very well be that she has mental health issues, and it's been exacerbated by AB who has a thing for Spanish women, whether that be him encouraging it, or him possibly being oblivious to do it and HB feeling the need to keep it up.

But I have come across many people who claim to be from somewhere they're not, and act in that way, either because they want to hide where they're really from or they feel their appropriated identity sounds more exciting. For example, I knew someone who once claimed she grew up in Saudi on a compound because of her dad's work and she spoke with the classic accent that international school children have. Turns out it was all fake - she was just friends with a group of people from the Middle East and tried to fit in.

I have many many more examples like that, and often it's people who feel their background is not exciting enough when they start to meet with others from different backgrounds, so they start pretending to be something they're not. I do think it's more likely to be that with HB, rather than serious identity / mental health issues.

Liverbird77 · 07/01/2021 13:32

@Cheeserton what's the lol for? Sorry, I don't get it.
My child is half Spanish and half English. He sounds Spanish when he speaks Spanish and English when he speaks English.
We do OPOL as much as possible, so he is learning both languages from native speakers.
Sorry if I missed the joke.
