This is for the person who asked if her husband was also lied to. The video seems to answer this.

great post elp

I imagine a bit like in UK people are using BAME which personally I really don't like and is mad lumping people like that - but I'm not "BAME" so I guess not for me to have an opinion on.

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2021 21:42

Someone reminded me of the Kathleen turner accent story from 2009 (or so). Interesting parallels not least in some of the reporting.

LadyEloise · 01/01/2021 21:53

I was just Shockthat she had five nannies. One for each child.
Her Mum sounded great and looked so young to have Hilaria as a daughter.
The hesitancy with her name was insightful now we know her real name.
I would wonder why, why did she do it. She must have known it would come out.

Could the source Alec talks about be in the Trump camp ?
Alec has taken the p for quite some time and suddenly the tables are turned on him.

user1471565182 · 01/01/2021 22:09

We should have listened to puppet Kim Jong. Fucking Arec Baldwin.

user1471565182 · 01/01/2021 22:11

Wonder if shes a Pixies fan.

user1471565182 · 01/01/2021 22:15

Anyway, supposedly this 'Hilary pretending to be spanish' thing has been a well known joke in new York for years

user1471565182 · 01/01/2021 22:33

Oh I also wanted to say on the other thread- a lot of these US ideas of ethnicity go back to the klan. Its not something anybody should be wanting to copy in their own countries. They (the Klan but other dodgy organisations as well) basically attacked anybody italian, hispanic, catholic or jewish as outsiders and that slipped into lawmaking.

Also have a look into why americans call white people 'caucasian'. Thats whole layers of fucked up.

Circusoflove · 01/01/2021 22:37

@Fizzydrinks123 Oh yes I totally agree. Sex is not a social construct

Circusoflove · 01/01/2021 22:47

@elp30 Thanks that was really interesting. So Hola magazine would be pleased to feature her even though she’s not Latina because as a ‘Spanish’ person she’s aspirational but relatable to their readers?

MadameMiggeldy · 01/01/2021 23:07
**@flaxmeadow there is literally no Spanish heritage going back 4 generations. There is German, English and Irish.

You can't excuse her gas-lighlighting behavour, don't be silly. She made it up !!

I'm not excusing her, it's bonkers, but some random person on Twitter claiming to have done the family tree isn't necessarily accurate. If you're getting your info from the tabloid press, even more so.

Americans lie about heritage and trees all the time anyway. I wouldnt trust an American geneologist as far as I could throw them. I've seen claims about direct descent from famous historical figures who left no record of ever having children and lived in a time when records we have now are incredibly scarce. I actually saw a comment last night on social media, under a history article, where someone claimed to be a descendant of Boudica.

US identity politics is crazy. Look at Joe Biden for example. Has an ancestor from 1812, or thereabouts, supposedly born in Ireland, and apparently this makes JB "Irish", that is his repeated claim, and no one in the USA bats an eyelid at his ridiculous nonsense. Is it any wonder that someone like Hilaria takes it a step further
Joe Biden’s Irish lineage is very well established. He has documented Irish ancestry on both sides of his family tree. Emigrants from Mayo and Louth from around 1850. No supposedly about it. He has ongoing relationships with cousins here. Irish -American identity is not the same as Hilary/Hilaria appropriating a Spanish identity.

piscis · 02/01/2021 09:45

I am originally from Spain. I remember the first time I heard about her, thinking what a strange name! Hilaria may sound Spanish but I certainly don't know absolutely anyone with that name, it is a very very strange name for someone her age (even for someone older too).

I have been always surprised not to see her mentioned in the magazines in Spain. I remember when Bruce Willis had a Spanish girlfriend, they were often in the magazines in Spain.

I just don't understand the video of her mum...I am baffled! Not just the pause! But if Hilaria was Spanish, that woman was also supposed to be Spanish??that's beyond ridiculous

BloggersBlog · 02/01/2021 10:01

The whole thing is like roadkill isnt it. Makes you cringe, you dont really want to look, but just cant help it.

It is the hand flapping, breezy "oh we moved here when I was 19" and not really giving information. The hand flap is to try and shut down the conversation.

And AB having to say "my wife is Spanish" - who cares? It is like the "I have loads of gay friends" thing people say when they are outed for homophobia - if you dont have a problem with something, why mention it?

CeibaTree · 02/01/2021 11:07

I wonder how she was planning to explain to her husband (if he didn’t already know) how all of her children are so fair skinned and blue eyed. I know genetics are weird but for all five of them to not have any trace of their mother’s supposed darker skin tone would be quite unusual. I wonder if she will now lay off the hair dye and tanning products.

This was definitely the strangest celebrity news story of 2020!

stairway · 02/01/2021 12:06

Joe Biden also has British ancestry but has never claimed to be British. I have an Italian ancestor but it really doesn’t make me Italian. If Hilaria has learnt the language and culture of Spain and spends time there with her family then she is more Spanish then someone who had some ancestors that migrated from Ireland in 1850.

So if she had said 'I have spent a lot of time there and love the culture and language' rather than deliberately allowing an assumption that she 'is Spanish' we'd be having a different conversation.

Joe Biden plays up his Irish 'roots' because being Irish is 'cool' in America, but being English is not.

As for 'Hilaria', I think it's been established that while she speaks Spanish, she has never spent significant time there. Her parents live in Mallorca which is one of the least 'Spanish' parts of Spain. And as an above poster said, if she'd simply said that she loves Spain and its culture, nobody would have had an issue. It's the fact that she tried to 'sell' herself as Spanish when she was born and raised as a Boston WASP that makes her behaviour objectionable.

stairway · 02/01/2021 13:07

She clearly lied and has exaggerated what most people in America do which is to choose the identity which suits them the most. It seems that what she did is totally unacceptable but had she took a DNA test and found a random fragment of ‘Spanish ‘ DNA or an ancestor that moved from Spain to the USA in the 1850s and claimed to be Spanish based on that , then that would be totally acceptable and normal, rather than basing her created identity based on her own lived experiences.

Well, not quite. She didn't simply exaggerate. She claimed that she only moved to America when she was 19 and that she didn't know how to say 'cucumber' in English. She also Hispanicised (is that a word?) her name. She was basically 'selling' herself on false pretences.
stairway · 02/01/2021 13:38

Anyone can change their name though, it’s perfectly legal to do so and there is nothing wrong with giving her children Spanish names. She shouldn’t make up lies about herself but plenty of people do that. It’s the lies that people find unnerving perhaps. She should have just said I identify as a Spanish person without embellishing it with lies. Anyway she’s been caught out with the lies now.

cherrypie790 · 02/01/2021 13:40

I feel very sorry for her family, tbh. They didn't ask for this.

It's such a bizarre story. And their (Hilarious and Alex) reactions are very telling...... no ounce of apology, just blaming everyone else.

If she had just said "oops, got caught out there trying to make myself more interesting" sort of thing, and changed her name back to Hillary...... she may well have weathered this. Instead, the media are going to be like bloodhounds.

Fizzydrinks123 · 02/01/2021 13:45

@stairway - no, she absolutely isn't more Spanish than a third generation person with one ancestor from a Spanish person.

Hilaria has a talent for speaking a language with a good accent and most importantly - lots and lots of money and time to throw at learning a language (her immersive hobby) - replace the Spanish language with being a Lord of the Rings fan - what a bore she'd be with her ability to speak Elvish etc....

It's an expensive immersive hobby, that's all.

She isn't more Spanish than someone who has one great-grandmother hailing from Spain at all. That person's DNA will show a significant proportion hailing from the Spanish region in common with lots of other people still living in that region (ie. no Spanish gene, but lots of people with similar DNA from that area). That person will have genuine Spanish heritage.

A famous fan of all things Italian is Nigella - having studied languages at University and living in Florence for a time - she doesn't claim to be Spanish - it's the equivalent of Nigella impersonating Nany Dell'Olio's persona.

www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/382027/Nigella-Lawson-By-speaking-Italian-I-came-into-the-person-I-am

You can't select an identity based on your likes/immersive interests/time/money to throw at it.

Fizzydrinks123 · 02/01/2021 13:49

sorry, Nigella doesn't claim to be Italian, I should have said above.

BTW Hilaria's brother speaks Spanish with an American accent - doesn't have the skill/talent - desire to throw himself at it etc that his sister does. He is married to a Spanish woman - so this is Hilaria's loose connection with the truth - my Spanish family, yes but it isn't your heritage.

Same as if her brother divorced his Spanish wife and married a Japanese woman - Hilaria wouldn't have become Japanese either - by talking about a Japanese family - she is a bright woman who plays loosely with the truth to obscure/lie and tell everyone else they're the fools for getting confused by what she "really" meant all along.

stairway · 02/01/2021 13:54

I disagree fizzydrinks123 I don’t actually think DNA is that important. We are all a mismatch of DNA anyway with most of Europeans sharing genes, it why there are a lot of Spanish looking people in wales England and Ireland. It would be different if she said she was African American due to the racism they experience.
She chose an identity based on her experience of Spain and her parents passion of Spain, it’s no more weird then basing your identity on a great grandparent imo. I don’t agree with the lying but I don’t have a problem with people choosing their own identity.

No, that makes no sense.

She is not a Spanish citizen. She has no Spanish ancestry. She hasn't even spent significant time in Spain. She has no clue what life is like for your average person in Barcelona or Vigo or Seville.

It would kind of be like someone with no British heritage who has spent no time in Britain apart from a few holidays in Knightsbridge, but has learned English to near native speaker fluency and claims to 'identify' as British. It's nonsense.

She's an upper middle class American WASP. Anything else is pure fantasy.
