AIBU? Vegan gift.

It was my birthday over the Christmas period; my friend - who is quite the "militant vegan" - has sent me some chocolates through the post which is really lovely and thoughtful of her.

However upon opening the chocolate I have found that it is vegan and gluten-free. I am neither of these things. I'm grateful for the thought but sadly this gift will go to waste as it is not something I'd eat.

I probably sound massively ungrateful but I really do appreciate the thought - the only reason I'm a bit irked by it is because I bend over backwards to only buy vegan, ethical products for my friend that I know she will use. She hasn't reciprocated this and has instead bought me something she would like, not me.

AIBU or just truthful? My DH understands why I am put out but I feel really ungrateful - if anything I'm more annoyed that this gift will go unused and my friend will have ultimately wasted her money.

Why would she do that? The OP has tried the chocolates and she likes them.

I am sensing a lot of non vegans on this thread who can't read Grin.

OhNoItsADalek · 30/12/2020 19:41

I also can't see any anger on this thread...okay there is a bit of anger aimed towards those who haven't bothered to read the thread but I think that's understandable Smile.

I was Shock at first, but I'm not vegan. I'm not even a vegetarian. I am open minded.
Speakeasy22 · 30/12/2020 19:46

Not just saying this so you send me some of the choc through the post... but congratulations on your levels of patience and tolerance in the face of endless quite spiteful posts by people who didn't bother to RTFT. (Now, can I have one??)

I’m a complete omnivore, but the most annoying thing is people wading in at the end of a long-ish thread without even bothering to read the OP’s updates.

She ate the vegan chocolates.

She liked them.

YukoandHiro · 30/12/2020 19:49

Have you tried them? A lot of vegan chocs are way nicer than regular ones

YABU

You’d have the answer to that question if you’d bothered to read the OP’s updates @YukoandHiro

@inappropriateraspberry

Too busy beating off people with my proverbial wooden stick.

I hope it's a vegan stick 😉

Yes, a celery stick to be exact 😉

(Saying this with love of course, I have nothing against vegans!)

Yes she has tried them. She likes them.

And by 'regular' chocolate I assume you just mean milk chocolate.

Thank you - although if I see one more post calling me "ridiculous" or "childish" I will indeed be ridiculous and childish and throw my phone against the wall 😉

Sending some of the chocs to you!! Smile

Yabu...a bit 😀

I’m not vegan but my dad bought me a vegan box of chocolates because he said it was getting very good reviews

He’d obviously made the effort

loveyouradvice · 30/12/2020 19:52

So so glad they are delicious - enjoy every mouthful!

Not heard of them... and I'm another who's a meat-lover and has been buying Booja Booja for years as my favourite chocolate and a wonderful gift - everything a present should be - expensive enough to be a touch of luxury but not so pricey I can't afford them - expresso and hazelnut are my favourite flavours

I think it says a lot about me that i REALLY REALLY want to do this...

BuzzingTheBee · 30/12/2020 19:54

Why wont you eat it? You cant expect a vegan to buy you a non vegan gift, its hardly the same

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 30/12/2020 19:54

Oh good lord

My post isn’t clear

I read the thread and im pleased you enjoyed them!!

oohmamama · 30/12/2020 20:00

I like the cut of your jib OP.

Not many people hold their hands up like you've done.

Lolololololol @ this thread.
Bloody well done @FrostyChocolateMilkshake

You have taken the hammering in good spirit and with good grace. You deserve the lovely chocolate.
You are now a fully inducted member of mumsnet, you shall receive your secret lanyard, ID and password in the post, (all vegan and animal friendly of course).

God sake folk, 2020 is bad enough without a fucking pile on.

Thank you so much! I'm a great big softy and don't like people being nasty to me haha but I've tried to handle the abuse with some dignity! I'll look forward to receiving my lanyard Wink and thank you again for the kind comment.

SpudsandGravy · 30/12/2020 20:11

YABU if you've not given them a try. I actually got some for some rellies and a friend this year because although I'm not a vegan (or a veggie) I tried some earlier in the year and they were the nicest truffles I've ever eaten.
