AIBU? Vegan gift.

It was my birthday over the Christmas period; my friend - who is quite the "militant vegan" - has sent me some chocolates through the post which is really lovely and thoughtful of her.

However upon opening the chocolate I have found that it is vegan and gluten-free. I am neither of these things. I'm grateful for the thought but sadly this gift will go to waste as it is not something I'd eat.

I probably sound massively ungrateful but I really do appreciate the thought - the only reason I'm a bit irked by it is because I bend over backwards to only buy vegan, ethical products for my friend that I know she will use. She hasn't reciprocated this and has instead bought me something she would like, not me.

AIBU or just truthful? My DH understands why I am put out but I feel really ungrateful - if anything I'm more annoyed that this gift will go unused and my friend will have ultimately wasted her money.

@Perfect28

Hate to break it to you but chocolate is vegan. If you prefer milk or white chocolate then you can't really say you like chocolate at all, but rather sugary milky versions of.
You’re not ‘breaking’ anything to the OP. It’s all been covered off already, if you’d RTFT.
FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 18:53

@Perfect28

Also why should she spend her money on something not vegan? She doesn't believe in supporting non vegan companies, with her money, that's fair enough!
Yes, I understand this now.
**@TheOneLeggedJockey* Pro tip: it really helps if you at least read theOP’sposts on the longer threads, otherwise you can just end up looking a bit silly. In fact, you can come off looking worse than theOPyou’re misguidedly berating.*

Thank you for this. You shall be receiving some of this divine chocolate in the post Wink
Yum - can’t wait! Flowers

@OhNoItsADalek

I have a headache now.
Bloody tell me about it. And I've not even had my tea yet. Too busy beating off people with my proverbial wooden stick.

I am going to have a pot noodle because I am so healthy.

Brefugee · 30/12/2020 18:56

excellent news @FrostyChocolateMilkshake - which brand are they? I'm always looking out for good vegan chocolate

ChippyChickenChips · 30/12/2020 18:56

Because vegan and gluten free chocolate is awful, all the yummy ness has been completely removed

Nothing has been removed from chocolate to make it vegan. Just nothing added to make it non vegan.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 18:57

@Squirrelblanket

What a pathetic thread! 😂

I think you should bin them and tell your friend you've done that and why, so she knows not to bother with you next year.

Ouch! Probably the harshest comment on here so far. Well done for that Flowers

Pretty pathetic of you to be so vicious to someone you don't even know.

Please don't bring common sense into this Grin.

I hope it's a vegan stick 😉

Tsubasa1 · 30/12/2020 18:58

Yanbu. You dont like the taste. I would mention it to your friend.

Except the OP does like them. Do keep up Grin.
SpiderGwen · 30/12/2020 19:00

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake, this is why I love AIBU. Yes, there are the bun fights and crazy threads, but then there are threads like this.

I’m glad you realised your good friend wasn’t being preachy, she was buying you a luxury product she thought you’d like. And she obviously could only buy something that lay within her beliefs,

Good on you for changing your perspective.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 30/12/2020 19:00

Well done OP that's a really good outcome. I take back my comment about you being childish sorry. And I'm not vegan, but I have bought those boojabooja chocolates for a vegan friend and good god they're good. Also if anyone is interested the Veja chocolate bar you can get from Holland and Barrett tastes like you're eating a bar of Nutella. Nom nom

TheOneLeggedJockey · 30/12/2020 19:00

@Tsubasa1

Yanbu. You dont like the taste. I would mention it to your friend.
Except ... she does like the taste?

And what sort of social incompetent reports back to a friend that they didn’t like the gift they’d bought them? Grin

Odd.

CrazyToast · 30/12/2020 19:02

It's not the same comparison.

It is ok for you to buy her vegan stuff cos it doesn't go against your beliefs to do so.

She won't buy you non-vegan stuff because it would mean she is contributing to an unethical industry and the harm of animals (as she sees it).

You can't expect her to do something she believes is morally wrong just cos you prefer those chocolates (I would hope that you wouldn't expect that from her).

TheOneLeggedJockey · 30/12/2020 19:03

@CrazyToast RTFT.

Nosenseofhumour · 30/12/2020 19:04

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake

I will definitely be messaging my friend later! I'll be eating these all night now and getting fatter by the minute! Very nice indeed; I was wrong to be judgemental.
You won't be getting that much fatter, minus all the added milk and sugar that non vegan choc has, I mean it's practically a health food.... enjoy 😊

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 30/12/2020 19:04

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake

I can understand your initial reaction. You felt she was pushing veganism on you and not thinking about what you'd like.

I'm impressed you listened to what people were saying about a vegan not wanting to buy non vegan products and that she probably thought you'd enjoy them.

Buying unethical products whether for yourself or others, really does go against the grain and makes present buying a bit of a minefield! So when you find something that fits within your ethics AND is really good, it's a rare score!!!

I'm glad you like them! 😀

londongirl12 · 30/12/2020 19:04

You sound like a child. "I don't like it" when haven't tried it.

Scarlettpixie · 30/12/2020 19:05

Good on you OP! Glad you enjoyed your chocolate 👍

If you buy your friend some booja booja chocolates at some stage she will love you forever 😊

OhNoItsADalek · 30/12/2020 19:05

The OP has tried them and she likes them.
