AIBU? Vegan gift.

It was my birthday over the Christmas period; my friend - who is quite the "militant vegan" - has sent me some chocolates through the post which is really lovely and thoughtful of her.

However upon opening the chocolate I have found that it is vegan and gluten-free. I am neither of these things. I'm grateful for the thought but sadly this gift will go to waste as it is not something I'd eat.

I probably sound massively ungrateful but I really do appreciate the thought - the only reason I'm a bit irked by it is because I bend over backwards to only buy vegan, ethical products for my friend that I know she will use. She hasn't reciprocated this and has instead bought me something she would like, not me.

AIBU or just truthful? My DH understands why I am put out but I feel really ungrateful - if anything I'm more annoyed that this gift will go unused and my friend will have ultimately wasted her money.

I'm vegan. Some vegan chocolate is crap, just like some non vegan chocolate is crap. Lots are awesome though!

Eat it, and feed back on this thread about the brand and what you thought...I'm always looking for new nibbles! Smile

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 18:31

@polkadotpjs

OP has shown how AIBU can actually work. She's had her mind changed. She may or may not like the chocolate (and I am overly invested in what it is and if they're nice now) but she's had and accepted a new viewpoint. We aren't used to it that's all. It's like my DH when I agree with him. It confuses him
This made me laugh - thanks for the chuckle!

If people new to the thread would just use their eyes and LOOK at my responses perhaps they would stop hurling abuse at me.

But yes, I shall try the chocs ASAP and report back of course!

“shut the fuck up and eat the chocolate” 😂
Your words- how is it?

Ginfordinner · 30/12/2020 18:31
@Ginfordinner you realise vegan chocolate, including dark chocolate, is not plain chocolate right? Are you feeling a bit dense this evening? Or just purposefully taking offence at people who do find vegan chocolate, including dark chocolate, rank?
Most of it is, yes.
The Booja-Booja chocolate ingredients I am looking at don't contain any dairy substitutes or any dairy, and contain a minimum 55% of cocoa solids.

She's vegan - she doesn't want to purchase anything that contributes to something she disagrees with.

Just be gracious and eat them. Or tell her next time that you have to eat meat with every bite or you feel faint and tell her to buy you sausages.

@Brefugee now are you sure that is vegan ie does the jam in the jammy dodger contain gelatine Grin? (life time of checking that sweet things don't contain gelatine like chocolate pudding/yogurts - & low fat yogurts! I once asked for veggie meal on aeroplane & they gave me that)

CuteBear · 30/12/2020 18:31

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake are they dark chocolate? They are naturally dairy free (vegan) and gluten free.

OchonAgusOchonO · 30/12/2020 18:32

@PerhapsOverlyWorried - you realise vegan chocolate, including dark chocolate, is not plain chocolate

Plain chocolate is dark chocolate. Most decent quality dark (or plain) chocolate is vegan.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 30/12/2020 18:32

Some vegan chocolates are horrible. I accidentally bought some vegan chocolate coins from M&S last year, realised before I wrapped them and decided I would try them before gifting them to someone. Would not recommend at all. Spat my chocolate coin out and bought some more chocolates.

However, some vegan chocolate is lovely. Another accidental purchase was buying DH a vegan brownie from the deli. Realised after he ate it. He shrugged and said it was really nice. I tried a piece and I have to agree with him, would never have known it was vegan unless the deli had said.

The range of vegan products now is pretty wide and far reaching (which is why I keep accidentally buying vegan options). When there is a wide variety of products, you get some that are nice and some that are not so nice. Well done for trying them OP.

Jammie Dodgers are vegan so no gelatine.

My vegan niece bought me an excellent non vegan cookbook.

My annoying sister has bought me 100 plug plant vegetables that I will have to plant. I have a very small garden which is just lawn and I don't want to turn it into a vegetable plot, and if I buy pots, and compost, I've calculated it will cost me over £300. Now THAT is a gift that matches the lifestyle of the giver and not the receiver! (I won't be activating the voucher, I don't care how much it cost her).

Margay · 30/12/2020 18:33

You don't know me. How do you know whether or not I "try new things"? Really weird thing to say.

Well your initial reaction to a new kind of chocolate was "Ew! I'll chuck them in the bin without trying them because they'll be horrible!". So...

CupoTeap · 30/12/2020 18:34

I'm sure on a thread on here I e seen that Oreos are vegan too.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 30/12/2020 18:34

If they are the boojabooja chocolates OP they are amazing! You'd never know they were vegan. Plenty of food you may eat every day are vegan and most sweets are gluten free by coincidence. Oreos are vegan for example! Being vegan means she doesn't want to spend her money supporting industries that go against her beliefs so of course she isn't going to buy you something non vegan. Why don't you give them a try? I think you're being a bit childish to be honest.

Good. However, I have to say you are being extremely unreasonable for the length of time it is taking you to try the damn chocolate.

Also, can you clarify whether you like dark chocolate or not as that will influence the weight I give your opinion?

OhNoItsADalek · 30/12/2020 18:35

Yeah Oreos are vegan as well.
Rosieandtwinkle · 30/12/2020 18:36

My DH used to bring us back some
mint chocolates from a local
farm shop as the occasional weekend treat. They’re amazing and it was a good few months before we realised they were vegan. Give them a try, you may be pleasantly surprised Smile

pinfloy · 30/12/2020 18:36

I'm not vegan, but most chocolate is gluten free

A huge amount of chocolate is not suitable for coeliacs. The more people that know this the more likely I am to be gifted chocolates i can actually eat :-)

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/12/2020 18:36

If you don't like them OP you can send them to me!

If you went to her house for a meal you wouldn't expect her to cook meat for you would you? Even if she wasn't going to eat it herself? Because that would be contributing to the meat industry. This isn't any different, except it's the dairy industry.

@MarkRuffaloCrumble please can I have your cake recipe - it sounds amazing

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 18:37

Well. The news you have all been waiting for.

I've opened the chocolate (it is like a brownie, with chocolate on top).

BLOODY DELICIOUS!!

Will cut bits up and post them to the nice PPs on here Wink Grin

Tbf a lot of people have that reaction to vegan food Grin.

Meanwhile these same people will be happily eating a McDonalds apple pie and a beef pot noodle blissfully unaware Grin.

Ginfordinner · 30/12/2020 18:38

Yay!

Can you tell us what brand they are now. Pretty please.

TeddysTigerEyes · 30/12/2020 18:38

I remember when my mum went veggie in the 90’s and brought quorn into the house, my dad nearly left her!! Many years later she is happily veggie and my dad didn’t leave... He even eats quorn sausages too. I am not veggie but I love veggie sausages and much prefer them to cheap sausages. Glad you are going to give them a try OP, if you hate them then at least you know you did.
