Emotional abuse in Harry Potter

Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter but I never thought about the Ron/Hermione thing this way before and she is SO RIGHT.

AIBU to think this is irresponsible in children's literature?

Sorry. Wrong thread! Blush

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/12/2020 20:07

The pigs should have invited they/them in for a vegan dinner. None of that problematic conflict stuff.

Exactly. How inclusive it could have been. What a wasted opportunity Sad

Camomila · 29/12/2020 20:49

My comment wasn’t so much about her not marrying someone as academic (i’m married to someone with barely any o’levels) but their pathways in life are so clearly different. One would have to significantly compromise- ron’s a homebody like his parents, that’s not Hermione’s life choice. She’s off to rule the world, and has the potential to do so.

I think that's why (once he's grown up) Ron's a good partner for Hermione...Hermione can get on with changing the ministry and Ron is the "steady" partner in the background who makes sure she relaxes occassionally/lets the kids have fun when she would probably get a bit "tiger mum".

Ron's mum is probably a big "pro" too...kids need a last minute dragon costume/school bake sale etc. and Molly would be on it.

Livelovebehappy · 29/12/2020 20:54

I think a lot of critics of JK have their own agendas. There are very vocal groups out there who are determined to bring her down because she hasn’t conformed to their way of thinking, like all the other luvvies.

Amanduh · 29/12/2020 20:55

Oh for fucks sake. It’s a made up story about wizards. Stop with this utter tedious theory nonsense! So boring

TheBuffster · 29/12/2020 20:58

But we know Ron's useless, Harry clueless and Dumbledore flawed. It is what makes the world seem real.
It doesn't stop me enjoying the books.
Ginny is awesome though. Anyone who disagrees gets a howler.

So why do we study books in school then? This kind of analysis has been around since books were first written.

Dickens, austen, steinbeck etc are all made up stories too.

underneaththeash · 29/12/2020 21:05

OP - you're bored and this is the most ridiculous thread I've ever read.

DressingGownofDoom · 29/12/2020 21:06

I think the article is a bit daft. There are 7 HP books and she doesn't give a direct quote from any of them to back up the very sweeping generalisations she's making. Ron was occasionally rude to Hermione, and Harry, as they all were to each other. Because they were teenagers, and human. HP is all about the human condition, the darkness in each of us and how we can overcome it, and what can happen if we choose not to. There was not one single character in the story who wasn't flawed in some way, who didn't hurt another character intentionally or not.

Now now.

I don't agree with this thread in particular but it's more than that.

The stories studied in school generally have just a bit more literary merit than Harry Potter. They're excellent, page-turning, well- plotted stories. But they're children's stories about wizards. If a senior pupil in my school wished to do a literary study on the Harry Potter novels they'd be told a firm 'no'.

lol

Hp is a fairly mediocre kids series. Not literachoor. No slur on jk, her gilbraith series is fantastic

The point is despite dickens being maudlin sentimental shite, Steinbeck being maudlin romanticised shite, etc, no one has a massive fucking go every day on the ground of thought crime. And why? Because she's a woman with the audacity to think and speak for herself

sauceyorange · 29/12/2020 21:21

And yes I know they're dead. No one burns their books though do they

MrsMiaWallis · 29/12/2020 21:28

Maybe you should rethink that. Dd (selective school) did her epq on them, is predicted an A, talked about it in her PS and got great low offers from RG unis. Just saying.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/12/2020 21:28

The whole 'we'll end up with a pair of trolls' Yule ball attitude.
I took it as actual trolls😂

TheBuffster · 29/12/2020 21:32

One of my mates did her a’level literary study on The Smiths Lyrics.

Surely it’s the quality of the analysis, not that which is analysed, that matters?

TheChampagneGalop · 29/12/2020 21:34

Stephen King is alive, wrote a child sex orgy in IT and hasn't been cancelled or had his books burned. Guess why.

Who decides which stories have “literary merit”? I fucking hated Bronte and Steinbeck, wuthering Heights is about the most plotless drivel I’ve ever come across.

As for The Hobbit and LOTR, over descriptive indulgent crap Grin

TheBuffster · 29/12/2020 21:41

Wish I'd been able to study Harry Potter.
A damn sight more interesting than The Faerie Queens and The Red and the Black.

Wheresmykimchi · 29/12/2020 21:43

@Icanboogie awk away. Say what you like. They are well written.

Wheresmykimchi · 29/12/2020 21:45

@TheBuffster

I personally find Ron is a bit of a misogynistic b*, yet I absolutely enjoy the books and love JK. The bits about Ron that make me squirm are: Ron continually making personal comments about Louise Midgeon (love Hermione telling him off though!) Snide comments about Moaning Myrtle. Snobbishness about Luna. The whole Hermione/Krum love triangle and Ron's behaviour. The whole 'we'll end up with a pair of trolls' Yule ball attitude. Ignoring of Padma Patel after she gives him a pity date. Treatment of Lavender. General unwillingness to forgive small slights or accidents (Scanners/ Harry as Goblet of Fire school champion/ Hermione kicking his ass in class.) Dumbledore absolutely seems to have the sum of him giving him the 'Put Outer', which is interesting as they generally remark Dumbledore doesn't know him very well. To me it's obvious he's a bit of a jerk. I think I read somewhere JK was originally going to kill him off. Instead she killed off Fred, who generally comes across as a bit better than Ron. Not that I have thought about it too much lol!
But it's Ok for Hermione to make the cutting comments belittling him and fly birds at him.
sociallydistained · 29/12/2020 21:45

God this thread and that article has just made me realise this is me. I've always "shipped" these type of relationships. Had a history of this type of boyfriend. Now I'm in a relationship with a guy who is the sweetest, kindest loving man and I am NOT utterly obsessed with him like I was my exes who were very much Ron's. FFS!
The thing is I will always find this type of relationship exiting and a relationship with lack of conflict a problem. I need therapy 🙄

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 29/12/2020 21:45

Yup. Writing your thesis on Harry Potter is undoubtably fun.
