Purely for a Black Forest gateau?

I've looked everywhere for one and finally saw one this morning in M&S. But is was fifteen quid?!?!?!?!?

It will only be for dh and I as the kids don't like it (weirdos). And I just think that's a ridiculous amount to spend on pudding for two people.

Whats the chances it'll be whoopsied down to a more manageable fiver or so right before closing time?

Go an hour before closing time (to account for the queues) 😂

Whiskyinajar · 24/12/2020 15:21

Don't...only risk is they may have sold out.

They wouldn't be c,osinng any earlier even if there were no customers, shop staff are not allowed to do that.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 24/12/2020 15:23

@Sertchgi123

It's so 70s darling.
This is true. But its hands down the most sublime pudding ever.

We've got the Aldi Roulade version in the freezer ready for tomorrow. It's such a shame that I think I'm the only one who likes it 😁

KatherineJaneway · 24/12/2020 15:24

That's fine but don't try and stay after closing.

ancientgran · 24/12/2020 15:25

I don’t know if it will. I read (on here I think) that M&S (used to?) have staff come in after hours to purchase excess stock at knock down prices. Many years since I worked there (I was a teenager) but yes we used to queue up at the end of the day and buy stuff for a few pennies. Some also went to the homeless shelter.

drizzleborn · 24/12/2020 15:29

I'm totally invested in the BFG saga! Do let us know what happens...

Sn0tnose · 24/12/2020 15:32

I’ve got one in the fridge. It looks so lush I’m considering sacking off the turkey and just sitting down with that and a fork.

ilovecardigans · 24/12/2020 15:34

@BlackCatShadow

No, you are helping the Black Forest gateau to fulfill its life purpose and saving it from being potentially cruelly binned.
I like you! Xmas Grin
cyclingmad · 24/12/2020 15:44

I popped into mine earlier only cos I wanted to grab a spatchcock chicken and there was only 2 left so didn't dare wait anyw later. They had yellow labelled some rolls but thats was it.

I suppose could go back but it is super cold outside, think ill just stay in

wildraisins · 24/12/2020 15:45

M&S won't close early if there aren't any customers. Your local convenience store might but M&S is a massive high street chain. It will stay open until the time stated.

Why would it be unreasonable to go out and buy something you want on Christmas day? Just go if you want to, or don't go if you decide it's not worth it.

FWIW I don't think it's that expensive for a Christmas Day pudding.

wildraisins · 24/12/2020 15:48

If it's the one I'm looking at it serves 10 people??

£15 for a cake that serves 10 seems very reasonable. I know there are only two of you but it's not an expensive cake for what you're getting.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 24/12/2020 15:49

Do you not have anything better to do at 6.45pm on Xmas eve

Nope. Sweet FA. Is there something that MN thinks I should be doing?

DahliaMacNamara · 24/12/2020 15:55

Where are you, OP? If you put leftovers outside your door I will happily come and take your guilt and the cake away once you're done with it. Can't drive because of a minor injury and DH is still working, otherwise I'd be at my nearest M&S filling my boots.

fabulousathome · 24/12/2020 15:57

Go now if you want it. If it's sold out you will be upset. If it is sold out buy something else delicious.

Lindy2 · 24/12/2020 15:58

I love a Black Forest Gateau. I wish I'd got one now.

Go and treat yourself OP. You know you'll be disappointed if it's sold out at closing time and you'll crave BFG for all of Christmas.

When I worked on the cream cake counter in BHS in the late '60s the supervisor would come round half an hour before closing and authorise a 50% reducation of what was left. Mid afternoon we would put what we wanted under the counter then once they were 50% off bring them out and buy them. To be honest I think that M and S staff, and other places, deserve first dibs in the reductions!
LEELULUMPKIN · 24/12/2020 16:02

I got that last year for the two of us and it was very nice but didn't get all eaten.

I got a free one from iceland (they cost £2) and more than adequate sub.

I didn't feel so guilty about the waste either, not that there was any, We scoffed the lot!

Try Iceland's OP.

hansgrueber · 24/12/2020 16:03

A good frozen Black forest gateau is Coppernrath and Wiese if you get desperate!

The OP is obviously better prepared than smeone still runnng themselves ragged at that time on Christmas Eve, except craving a BF gateau. I put the Celebrations into their annual bowl earlier and got out the Pringles, I've not touched wither, is there a medal available??
Midlifebaby · 24/12/2020 16:12

I’ve spent way too much on our meal for 3 tomorrow. Now I’ve got a craving for a Black Forest gateaux ....thank you very flippin much OP 🤣

Skippii · 24/12/2020 16:14

I’ve just been to get one. It was full price because it’s use by 27th so wouldn’t be reduced. Just had a slice, definitely worth it

delilahbucket · 24/12/2020 16:14

They were reducing at 1pm today but in terms of party food, desserts and Christmas day food, there wasn't much left and they weren't knocking it down. I wouldn't make a special trip for one specific item as it is likely to be out of stock. You may get many other bargains though.

VinylDetective · 24/12/2020 16:15

I did the same with the Quality Street @hansgrueber, I had to have a purple one when I did it. You definitely deserve a medal.

ChronicallyCurious · 24/12/2020 16:19

I just got back from my local and it was rammed. Queue outside the door, it closes at 6 today. There was yellow stickers but only things that are dated today/tomorrow and all of the other festive stuff dated past that wasn’t reduced. Picked up some cheesecakes priced £1.21 from £4 and a few bits for the freezer, lots of veg was reduced too but overall I was disappointed.
