Purely for a Black Forest gateau?

I've looked everywhere for one and finally saw one this morning in M&S. But is was fifteen quid?!?!?!?!?

It will only be for dh and I as the kids don't like it (weirdos). And I just think that's a ridiculous amount to spend on pudding for two people.

Whats the chances it'll be whoopsied down to a more manageable fiver or so right before closing time?

Only first wave yellow label surely?! We are hoping to catch the Holy Grail Third Wave later on. We have everything we need and it’s just us two, but we will be freezing stuff.

RaspberryCoulis · 24/12/2020 14:05

Have just ordered a "too good to go" bag from my local BP/M&S petrol station... fingers crossed for lots of Christmassy treats.

Cornishmumofone · 24/12/2020 14:05

I've just left M&S. They were yellow labelling... but not the BFG :-(

PoptartPoptart · 24/12/2020 14:06

The Black Forest gateaux cake you are talking about from M&S is AMAZING!
We had it last year and loved it so much we got another this year. In fact, it was the first thing I looked for when M&S started stocking their Christmas food.
I paid full price to ensure we got one (but there are four of us eating it so it’s more justifiable price wise).
I would say get one if you possibly can op.. you will not be disappointed Wink

Wejustdontknow · 24/12/2020 14:08

I work in a asda, we have been yellow labelling since 10am, have already done 2 rounds and another was due at 2pm. Pigs in blankets were already down to 40p, turkeys at just a few pounds. We started early as had so much stock left. Not sure about desserts as I work the meat section

Clevererthanyou · 24/12/2020 14:08

I only voted yabu because you run the risk of not having any of you go that late and I’d be disappointed in your shoes. You could make one if you grab the ingredients as it’s surprisingly easy! Have a lovely Christmas whatever the outcome.

oohyoudevilyou · 24/12/2020 14:11

Go and get the BFG....even if it's still £15. It's not just tomorrow's pudding, it's Boxing Day pudding, and maybe even breakfast on the 27th! YOLO Wink

Greenbks · 24/12/2020 14:11

I got that from M&S last year but have to say was disappointed. This year we went for a blackforest gateau at Lolas cupcakes and wow it is amazing!

Newnamefor2021 · 24/12/2020 14:11

I picked my M&S order up yesterday and saw people with them and I so wanted it. But we have more cakes than people already 🙈 so couldn't justify it.

zukiecat · 24/12/2020 14:12

I say YABU but only because I hate anything milky or creamy, and only DD would eat it.

I didn't want to pay £4 for a large trifle in Asda yesterday because only DD would eat it, and so much would be wasted, so I bought her two individual ones instead.

You might struggle to get one at closing time though, I went into M&S yesterday and the queue for the food hall was ridiculous, and I've heard of similar round the country. I wasn't going in for food fortunately.

rc22 · 24/12/2020 14:12

I'm sure it's worth a shot!!

Youngatheart00 · 24/12/2020 14:16

Oooh I now really fancy a Black Forest gateaux!

You are not being unreasonable

bananaskinsnomnom · 24/12/2020 14:16

Naaaah I’ve spent many a Christmas Eve working in a supermarket - even if it was suddenly empty half an hour before closing they’re not allowed to close! (Independents might but not a chain)

You won’t be alone, don’t bank on it being there but yeah nip in.
Make it a game - give the children a pound or two each and see what they can buy. Craziest buy wins. Or everyone hunt for a bargain for someone else as a daft gift while you hunt out your pudding. Grin

Meepmeeep · 24/12/2020 14:16

I suppose it's just a bit ridiculous to do it. And the staff may have been able to close earlier if the shop was empty (do they do that?)

Ha ha ha ha. You’ve clearly never worked in retail have you? More chance of COVID restrictions being fully lifted tonight than a supermarket being quiet at closing time on Christmas Eve. Going back to my student days you had to chase customers to the checkout - we’d also stop people coming in 15 mins prior to closing.

Sertchgi123 · 24/12/2020 14:19

It's so 70s darling.

unlikelytobe · 24/12/2020 14:19

M&S used to offer a lot of about to expire produce to their staff at a great discount. Don't know if they still do that. If I thought it wouldn't be hell on wheels I'd go and look for last minute bargains myself. A lot of Xmas fayre is BBE Dec 26th so they have to shift it somehow.

NoSauce · 24/12/2020 14:20

I doubt there will be any OP.

ilikebooksandplants · 24/12/2020 14:24

I went to an M&S at 6 am this morning and some of the shelves were empty (no celery!). I was a bit disappointed with the Christmas dessert selection this year in M&S!
They had plenty of the BFG though so if you are anywhere near Dalston try the one on the high street. Go early though - then you will have peace of mind that you are getting something you will enjoy (surely that’s worth £15 on its own!).

FairyontopofthetreeBatman · 24/12/2020 14:26

Don’t wait until 15 mins before go about an hour before. M&S start reducing early to achieve no food to landfill (or they did whenI worked there)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/12/2020 14:27

This is making me want to go to M&S and buy lots of price-reduced fancy food we don't need or have space for! Starting with a BFG.

OvertiredandConfused · 24/12/2020 14:29

M&S are reducing food from 1700 today

dottiedodah · 24/12/2020 14:29

Not sure about M and S really .Some years ago went in for a lovely BD cake which was expiring that day .Still original price! Said they would not be marking down .However can always give it a try and see .Good luck !

actiongirl1978 · 24/12/2020 14:32

I know someone who buys their Xmas Dinner at 3pm on Xmas eve every year from m&s and usually gets the lot for next to nothing and always has an amazing joint of meat. So yes I'd go for the BFG

HopeAndDriftWood · 24/12/2020 14:34

According to our local Facebook page, our M&S started discounting stuff at 1:30 and the queue now looks a bit mad Hmm

slashlover · 24/12/2020 14:37

Nobody should go into any supermarket 15 minutes before closing on Christmas Eve.
