Purely for a Black Forest gateau?

I've looked everywhere for one and finally saw one this morning in M&S. But is was fifteen quid?!?!?!?!?

It will only be for dh and I as the kids don't like it (weirdos). And I just think that's a ridiculous amount to spend on pudding for two people.

Whats the chances it'll be whoopsied down to a more manageable fiver or so right before closing time?

I got one from M&S frozen today it was £6

Madcats · 24/12/2020 14:38

I did a part time Christmas job in M&S foodhall about a decade ago. The staff all get invited back in, even if they aren't working on Christmas Eve, (think it was about 30 minutes before closing) and food is heavily discounted (90% off, I seem to remember).

I think there were informal/pre-agreed deals for longer service staff to get first dibs for turkeys and £££ meats etc.

Good luck with your bargains (I am toying with the idea of nipping in later).

AlternativePerspective · 24/12/2020 14:39

I don’t know if it will. I read (on here I think) that M&S (used to?) have staff come in after hours to purchase excess stock at knock down prices. My DS works in M&S and last year he brought home 1.2kg’s of smoked salmon, a load of party food and some gravy for a fiver.

Also they sell off the joints which have been food to order joints which people haven’t collected - for a fiver...

I am ever hopeful of some bargains tonight....

RhubarbTea · 24/12/2020 14:41

My local M&S had yellow labels alplenty at lunchtime, I'd only popped in for spuds and I got loads of knockdown meals for the freezer Grin Not sure I'd leave it too late.

Melonlover80 · 24/12/2020 14:42

£15...I wouldn’t think twice

But if you’re on the bones of your arse... perhaps give it a miss

Highly doubt that will happen this year!

They do one in the freezer section. £6. DH really rates it.
foodtoorder · 24/12/2020 14:44

Do it. I love going to M&S or Waitrose just before closing to get as many bargains as possible!

AlternativePerspective · 24/12/2020 14:48

Highly doubt that will happen this year! There’s no reason to believe that it won’t. The food they sell off is food which will go past its sell by date before the shops reopen and if they don’t sell it off then it will be thrown out.

Crunchymum · 24/12/2020 14:49

Do you not have anything better to do at 6.45pm on Xmas eve @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz ?
Not being snipey, just genuinely curious!!

(Maybe your M&S close earlier than mine?)

YanTanTethera01 · 24/12/2020 14:50

We went last night and they had a couple in stock but wasn't prepared to give them £15 for a regular chocolate cake, a bit of cream and a few cherries in kirsch. Set to work and made my own today, only for the family to tell me they all hate black forest gateau. Should have asked them first maybe Angry

Xerochrysum · 24/12/2020 14:50

If you really want it, I'd get it now, don't want to risk it. Or all the time you have to wait, I would make one myself. It just feel not Christmassy at all. Sorry.

AlternativePerspective · 24/12/2020 14:52

I always go to the shop at some point on Christmas Eve just to say that I went to the shops on Christmas Eve. Grin This year I haven’t been to a shop since July, and am considered vulnerable as such haven’t left my house much either, so I’ve had to forego that tradition just this time....

doctorhamster · 24/12/2020 14:54

Most shops stop letting customers in 15 mins before closing don't they? I'd give yourself a bit more time!

namechangealerttt · 24/12/2020 14:58

I used to work in a Waitrose and did a Christmas eve. It was crazy, people were camped out and standing by the Turkeys for hours waiting for us to reduce them, there were a mob.

When the time came to reduce the turkeys, we had to remove them from the fridge, take them out the back to label, then bring them back out because the crowd of people waiting was crazy. People were snatching them straight from the trolley as we brought them back out.

One woman ended up with about 5 Turkeys in her trolley after they were reduced, and she wandered the store on her mobile, calling everyone she knew to ask if they wanted a Turkey. FFS if it is Christmas eve and you want a turkey, you already have a Turkey! God knows who would have the fridge space for an extra one!

LH1987 · 24/12/2020 15:01

Do it!and then come back and tell us if it works so I know to try next year 😀

longwayoff · 24/12/2020 15:01

Ah well. I've got a family size Iceland chocolate trifle, tin of black cherries, bottle of kirsch and some choc mini rolls. Make do and mend.

Charlie63849 · 24/12/2020 15:01

It’s Xmas. It’s £15, not £50. Should of just picked it up. Who wants to mess around grabbing yellow labels on Xmas eve.

I bought the salted caramel golden balls and I think they were £12. Treat yourself.

Destinysdaughter · 24/12/2020 15:02

I've just come back from M%S, it was packed. No social distancing and loads of stuff reduced. Good luck OP!

rollinggreenhills · 24/12/2020 15:05

Right, that's it - I'm off.

Not to M&S, that's too far away, but there's a Morrisons 5 minutes up the road.

5lilducks · 24/12/2020 15:06

I would under normal circs but these days there's no such thing as "nipping" into mns or any other supermarket for that matter with all the queues (or the potential for it) and 2m distance measures etc, I just couldn't be bothered.

IHateBoswell · 24/12/2020 15:11

I’ve just got back from town and gave M&S a wide swerve, the queue outside to get into the food part was ridiculous.

QueenPawPaws · 24/12/2020 15:13

I went to the hospital M&S. Free parking, lots of yellow stickers and nobody else in there

emmathedilemma · 24/12/2020 15:15

You do realise that you won't just come home with a black forest gateau though.... have you got space in the freezer for a truck load of reduced party food, 2 turkeys, a leg of lamb and 3 garlic ciabattas?
