Just abandoned trolley in supermarket.......

Shops always busy at Christmas, I've just stupidly tried to pop in for a few things, first aisle got jammed in and couldn't move trolley round with out bumping someone, everywhere I turned trolleys and people darting around. Put my apples back, decided to go back later but still struggled to navigate round people. Get near doors decide to keep walking at this point as a man walk down my right side trying to cut across in front and because I decided to keep going, got called a F**king nut case and he kept calling me to the man behind me.

As I left I stated to the man behind that I'd spend a good while trying to stay out of people way that I didnt actually get anywhere and he was being a bit harsh, he replied well I never f**king said anything did I.
I need stuff but I'm I the only one to find the shops today so unbearable that I left and Im prepared to just get whats left later rather than deal with crowds like that.
Christ it had me dizzy and demented.

Sorry, just feel calmer already just typing my stress out!!!

YANBU- good on you . I went to M&S at 6.15 this morning & it was still as busy as your average day. Had to queue to get in and lady behind me didn’t seem to understand social distancing concept- so I put my trolley behind me as a barrier. Far too many people in there & I really didn’t feel Covid safe especially as my area has this new strain. and in tier4. The queue to get in was through the clothes section of the store and they had lined it with all the sugary crap (chocolate , tinned biscuits etc) in a shameless effort to make us buy more unhealthy stuff. All in all a deeply unpleasant experience - mind you what did I expect from 2020!!!?

lljkk · 23/12/2020 21:50

it was 'brisker' in Sainsbury's at 7:30pm tonite than I expected, but not actually busy. We barely Q'd to pay.

Atrocious weather so DS drove & I paid; most of the other shoppers were also in groups of 2. I would have gone tomorrow (alone, when no rain) but was trying to find a super quiet time to go.

Agree with pp.
Go to smaller shops e.g. Co -op.
So much less stressful.
I don't go near large supermarkets since Covid.

KatherineOfTarragon · 23/12/2020 23:07

@Ddot enjoying
my hot bath and brandy. This has been a very long term!

KatherineOfTarragon · 23/12/2020 23:10

@Ddot Oh "and for your information I am very precious"

Yes, you really are.

sobby · 23/12/2020 23:11

I went to Aldi at 10pm yesterday in all the pouring rain, got what I needed. I've done all my shopping for Xmas after 8pm and all the time lockdown has been on. I believe the big supermarkets have been horrendous .

Stressybetty · 23/12/2020 23:18

We're in Shrewsbury, did main shop in Lidl, then few bits in Aldi, m&s food and Sainsbury's. Left home at 8pm and home 10.30pm. Was pretty quiet, raining, no Xmas puds to be seen sort from bleurgh orange ones in m&s and no turkey's left in Lidl. Also took DH who never does the shopping and doesn't go out much so bought far more than normal.

dividedwefall · 23/12/2020 23:31

Sounds horrible. I would have left too, and have done in similar circumstances.

I've seen a few bust ups in shops over recent days. I think the stress of this year has got to people. There was a huge multiway argument in my M&S yesterday. people had queued for ages to get in. If you shopped int eh clothes section you were supposed to go and queue back outside for the food hall. A woman just joined the queue from the clothes section (don't blame her - she'd already queued to get in) and the man in front of her made an almighty fuss, called over to shop assistant guarding the queue to throw her out. He was loud and aggressive, but funnily enough, failed to notice he was in a family of seven - two adults and five grown children. People in the queue started shouting at him to get out of the queue as he was taking up seven spaces in the shop with his large family. It was mental. I got the giggles and had to turn around and pretend to look at the crackers. People are really going crazy over nothing.

Ddot · 24/12/2020 02:39

Can't understand why my post got you so worked up. Maybe you just like to bully other people on here and it was just my turn.

from precious

dysongirl · 24/12/2020 03:03

Thought I was smart going to my local supermarket last night at 10pm
Unfortunately loads of other people had the same idea🤪
Que a mile long to get into the shop, felt quite anxious as I've been isolating
Not a nice experience at all.
People are getting into arguments as their so nervous and afraid
They just want to get in but what they need and get out.
Everyone's stress levels at an all time high

Sinful8 · 24/12/2020 03:37

@Rainbowsoup

God I really don’t understand this to be honest. Another person moaning that shops are busy whilst being in the shop adding to the people there. Why are you shocked? It’s 2 days until Christmas of course it is busy! And sounds like you went middle of the day when it’s obviously peak time.

Not only did it shock you but you made a pointless trip mixing with people when we’re not supposed to and put items back on the shelf that you’d touched..

I do like the. "It was so packed, not covid safe, but I did my last minute pointless Christmas shop" posts.

Especially if they can work in how its every other shoppers fault

Ddot · 24/12/2020 04:25

We all need to shop, christmas is going to be very different and very lonely for many. Just wait your turn, dont push in for what you want because you think your more important than others. Don't snap at others, remember everyone is on edge. Keep yourself and others safe. We all forget at times and make mistakes but just do your best. Merry covid free Christmas and an extremely merry new year to you all, I may even partake in a gin myself

Ddot · 24/12/2020 04:26

Wish I could sleep

Localocal · 24/12/2020 09:31

Little shops are not nearly as crazy. If you aren't looking for anything too esoteric, try a Tesco Express or a little independent convenience store.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 24/12/2020 09:34

Headphones, good audiobook or play (or music) and be prepared for long queues and a shipload of rude idiots.

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 24/12/2020 10:14

I keep repeating a little mantra in my head which is basically that we are all scared; all just doing our best and to try to be kind. It helps me to stay calm when I see pushing and shoving and people not behaving in the safest of ways.

Belladonna12 · 24/12/2020 10:25
**@Belladonna12 don't buy meat as me and DH are vegetarian. We bought carrots (2 types), cauliflower, brussels, parsnips, brocolli, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, lettuce, cucumber at the farm shop on Sunday. It will last easily until Friday.

I have never had a problem with veg going off in a week unless I bought it in Aldi. I either keep it in the fridge or in the shed. Done that every year at Christmas as far back as I can remember. Nothing would get me in a supermarket Christmas week
But a lot of people do eat meat and that will often not last until Friday if bought on the Sunday . Given that why are you surprised that so many people shop in the week before Christmas.

Justbrutallyhonest · 24/12/2020 11:06

Hmmm Christmas shopping busy, who’d have thought?

cissyandbessy · 24/12/2020 11:10

Went to M+S that was open till midnight on Monday night at 9.30pm. Was manic and the busier shop I've been in since March. Grim. Dashed round as quick as I could but made me feel queasy. Confused

Bridewel1 · 24/12/2020 11:13

Yeah I totally agree. Ok we have to wear masks but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t social distance. Virus numbers declined in the first lockdown and there was distancing and limited numbers in shops. Crowds and close contact and increased numbers of people in shops is what I’m seeing since masks and 1 meter rule was introduced and that increases the spread. People just don’t seem to care any more.
