to think Matt Hancock looks knackered

Just watched Marr show
Tetchy, knackered
Obvious why - he must have an enormous workload and responsibility

But being knackered and tetchy can't be good for decision making.

He's still being reactive rather than proactive, every step is weeks too late.

To be fair to him, if the media is to be believed (!), he has wanted stricter restrictions weeks before they were actually put into place, so he himself seems fairly proactive, but the rest of the party/bojo reactive.

CatholicKidston · 20/12/2020 11:39

@cushioncovers

This is just my opinion.

The government is made up of people who are doing a job. That's it, it's just a job. They might be wealthier and slightly better educated than most of us but ultimately they are just human. Why do we expect them to be fantastic at battling Mother Nature.

This virus has apparently mutated 25 times since it left Wuhan a year ago. No one knew until very recently if this mutation was anything to get excited about. Now they've realised it is, the government had reacted in a way they think might help.

I'm always amazed that some people think the government will save us or sort it all out for us. They won't, they are only worried about not overloading the Nhs, or fucking up so badly that they get voted out, they don't actually give a damn about our Xmas plans or if your 90 year old granny dies.

This virus has been created by worldwide arrogance and disrespect towards Mother Nature, science has been warning us for years now that we were heading for a zoological pandemic. Bovine TB has begun to cross over to humans, according to some environmental groups bird flu is back in the U.K. but has yet to make the news.

What the fuck do people think Matt Hancock is going to do?

It's time for less whining about Xmas lunch and for us all to start looking at how we are part of the problem. And no I don't vote Tory.

Because leaders of other countries have managed to control the virus much better than we can?

StCharlotte · 20/12/2020 11:44

@BasinHaircut

And I don’t think anyone is qualified for this.
Totally agree.
Ilovegreentomatoes · 20/12/2020 11:45

I don't blame the goverment I blame the British public who cannot follow rules and behave like spoilt brats because they think their freedom has been taken away.
Ppl here have been out flouting the rules and acting like idiots and then blaming it on the government because they can't take responsibility for themselves. Well now we are in this mess and they can only blame themselves.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 20/12/2020 11:47

And the reason other countries have done better with the virus is because the public actually follow the rules and take the virus seriously.

ancientgran · 20/12/2020 11:48

Maybe on compassionate grounds we should suggest he retires and we get someone competent.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 20/12/2020 11:51

The whole fucking lot need to retire

ancientgran · 20/12/2020 11:52

I said exactly the same when watching it this morning. Don't understand the constant questioning around why they changed things last minute. They changed it to try and protect people and based on new evidence.

Maybe teachers and parents who now have to isolate because they wouldn't let the last week of school go on line. I've heard of several teachers who got notified yesterday that they need to self isolate over Christmas. Maybe people are fed up that they wouldn't listen to the medical experts who were saying it needed to be cancelled, maybe people are disgusted at the PMs attitude to Keir Starmer on Wednesday. I think he should apologise and admit Starmer was right and he was wrong.

How come all these people knew it needed changing and the govt were the last to find out?

ancientgran · 20/12/2020 11:53

The whole fucking lot need to retire I don't think they deserve a pension though.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/12/2020 11:55

@chomalungma

Being knackered can't be good for decision making .
So what's the option? He makes sure he clocks off at 5 and damn the situation so he can get a good sleep or we replace them every time they need an extra nap?

I'd be more worried if he didn't look stressed and tired. People make important decisions under stress every day.

If he's about to have a breakdown that's different but snapping at an impudent journalist etc isn't a sign he can't do his job

SleepingStandingUp · 20/12/2020 11:59

@Ilovegreentomatoes

And the reason other countries have done better with the virus is because the public actually follow the rules and take the virus seriously.
Exactly. My friend left her flat in London yesterday out of necessity - young baby had needed something essential. She couldn't get over how busy it was, how many people just casually browsing the shops, hardly anyone in a mask, funny looks at her as she kept hers on etc. Now they're in T4. I wonder why. Oh must be someone else's fault.
looseddaughter · 20/12/2020 12:00

I thought he came across as defensive and self-pitying. He bloody should be tired and yes I do expect the government to be competent and empathetic in this situation, whether the virus is their fault or everyone's is nothing to do with that. They couldn't be expected to get everything right but I don't expect them to get everything wrong either.

xmasfairybuns · 20/12/2020 12:04

Aww, diddums. So are many school and nhs staff but he doesn't give any shits about them.

Roussette · 20/12/2020 12:05

@EnjoyingTheSilence has nailed it at 11.30

Some of the Govt's decisions have been hairebrained, ridiculous, knee jerk decisions.

There are others out there who could've made a damn sight better job of this.

The Eat Out To Help Out was a decision made whilst high on drugs. Must've been. I know of someone who managed to cram in two meals a day every day of the scheme. Pubs were losing money on it... profit versus costs.

The 5 day Christmas relax was pathetic. Why oh why doesn't this Government keep things tight and restrictive and warn the public Christmas may well not happen like it has in other years... but no... they give everyone 5 days off from Covid (like Covid is taking a holiday) and then realise they've made yet another crap decision and pull the plug on the whole thing.

This government are forever closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Ponoka7 · 20/12/2020 12:08

Considering that he's been snapping at frontline doctors since the start, I'd say that snapping at people is just him.

For anyone who hasn't seen this. I'd say it sums them up.

WeeMadArthur · 20/12/2020 12:08

The government are making decisions with one eye on retaining their popularity/vote share, that’s why we are getting stupid decisions.

damnthemanatee · 20/12/2020 12:09

@formerbabe

Just watched it and said the same to dh. Mind you, health secretary during a pandemic is hardly going to be a barrel of laughs.
Good, I hope he's miserable and broken and forever haunted by this shitshow. I hate him.
Regularsizedrudy · 20/12/2020 12:13

I couldn’t give a shit if he’s knackered

VienneseWhirligig · 20/12/2020 12:16

If you look at the backgrounds the senior ministers had before their SoS roles, none of them really scream innate ability to deal with a global health crisis. Sunak is the only one in a role remotely linked to his professional background. Its no wonder they all look knackered and stressed - they need to listen more and trust others, and not close their ears if the advice is unpalatable.

Matt Hancock - economist
Boris Johnson - journalist
Rishi Sunak - hedge fund manager
Gavin Williamson - owner of a ceramics manufacturing company
Dominic Raab - lawyer
Michael Gove - journalist

EvilPea · 20/12/2020 12:17

As much as I dislike creepy Hancock he’s the only one who has been consistently visible

Sparklesocks · 20/12/2020 12:18

His job is supposed to be difficult. He also said on Marr that they’d only just discovered the new strain even though it’s been around for months. Perhaps all the lies he’s spinning are tiring him out.

Astressie · 20/12/2020 12:18

I think he looked extremely emotional as he did when they announced we had a vaccine. It must be taking a huge emotional toll on him and others in government knowing that their actions and inactions of having such a huge impact on people's lives. Just imagine deciding for millions of people they can't have Christmas. I think they have been crap but still have to be humane about how we feel for them!!

KumquatSalad · 20/12/2020 12:20

I said to DH the other night that Matt Hancock has turned look of a man who has tried to resign and been refused. So he just has to keep going.

He looks like he’s very much regretting his career choices these days.

Iliketeaagain · 20/12/2020 12:21

@chomalungma

But being knackered and tetchy can't be good for decision making.

Honestly, it makes me feel not so bad when I look in the mirror and see how exhausted and haggard I look after the last 9 months in the NHS. I don't know anyone who isn't absolutely exhausted.

Some of it is volume of work, some of it stress - I have nightmares about members of my team dying of covid most nights, and wake up in a cold sweat.

So yes, I Matt Hancock didn't look tired, I'd be wondering how he's managed it.

DfEisashambles · 20/12/2020 12:22

The guilty one is Boris, Hancock is always and will always be the one left out to dry.
