Considering half of this site seems to be completely happy with breaking Covid related laws which other laws do you think shouldn't apply to you?
Is a TV licence too expensive and therefore optional? Should seatbelts be compulsory? Is it ever acceptable to take something without paying? Is assault acceptable in certain circumstances?

"Criminals" seems to fit quite well. It's linguistically and legally accurate and serves to separate someone who has been charged and found guilty by the legal process from someone who hasn't.

You don't need to get caught to be a criminal

Either that or I'm not a criminal, which I definitely know to be wrong because I do crime Grin

coldwaterfeed · 22/12/2020 18:15

Lying to the police

While police may want you to think you legally have to tell them the truth, it is not actually an offence to lie to a police officer unless you're wasting police time or perverting the course of justice.

You can only be prosecuted you lie and sign a declaration or if you lie in court.

Bitcherama · 22/12/2020 18:30

It used to be illegal to be gay. Fuck off.

Brahumbug · 22/12/2020 18:34

It was illegal to commit blasphemy until recently, the ultimate in victimless crime. Mind you, some groups are trying to reintroduce it by the back door, I'm looking at you the so called Muslim Council of Britain.

The original post is ridiculous.

Wishing14 · 22/12/2020 18:42

I would happily break any law in certain circumstances, absolutely.

GintyMcGinty · 22/12/2020 18:50

In my time
I've broken many, many alcohol licensing laws.
I'e tried various illegal drugs.
I'm broken traffic laws like speeding and commuter parking violations.

I've stretched COVID guidelines but I don't think I've broken any laws. Can't swear to it though case they change every week in Scotland it's hard to keep up.

FromageRay · 22/12/2020 18:53

I don't think the law making homosexuality illegal should ever have existed, nor should it ever have been illegal for women in NI to access abortions but you're right, all laws should be followed regardless. Especially the one that makes it illegal to be pissed in a pub 🤷‍♀️

This is a bit of a cowardly way to make aspersions against a religious group, with no evidence given.
agradecida · 22/12/2020 18:56

Is it ever acceptable to take something without paying?

I once ordered a takeaway to collect. Went in, guy rudely pointed to a seat, came back 10 minutes later, called my name, dumped my order on the counter and walked off into the kitchen. I waited prob just under 5 minutes for him to come back, then yes, took it without paying.
Are you happy for me to break a covid law now?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/12/2020 19:00

With covid what are laws and what are guidelines , people get confused
I know someone in a childcare bubble who thinks that means they are able to continue as normal , car share , pop round for coffee etc even when no childcare , now reading guideline / law or whatever it is thats not right but she geniunally thinks that its ok and not for me to say
Its getting confusing now

GrinchnotHinch · 22/12/2020 19:16

@ShinyGreenElephant

Oh I'd break most laws under the right circumstances I think. Anyone ever abused my kids in any way I would either kill them or have them killed. If I needed to steal to feed them or take care of them I wouldn't hesitate. I used to buy weed for my auntie when she needed it (cancer) and it was still illegal. And I'll be seeing most of my family over Christmas (over 3 days) because all of us except the step kids have had covid in November, cases are very low in our area and I see no reason to blindly follow Boris Johnson the corrupt lying twat when logic says there is an incredibly minimal risk to any of us.

Oh and no, I dont have a TV licence, clearly it is optional because noone has ever questioned it

Completely agree with this! I also don't have a TV license i think its outdated and i dont think anyone should have to pay it.

I dont watch "normal" TV or Sky in any way.

What is cowardly when people jump on you for attacking a religion? Also I am not casting aspersions on a religious group, just the self elected Muslim council, though there is nothing wrong with attacking religious groups, especially when they are homophobic and misogynistic not to mention promoting cruel forms of animal slaughter. The evidence for what I said is overwhelming if you bother to look, this thread is not the appropriate place. Take a look at the websites of the Council of Exmuslims, the national secular society or British Humanists for all the evidence you could possibly want.
I am a very strong atheist and there is nothing cowardly about my position!

TheBuffster · 23/12/2020 11:24

Do you eat meat?
I'm just asking because you reference halal as animal cruelty. 58 % of halal meat is stunned and blessed, not ritually slaughtered. I have a Muslim friend who sees animal cruelty as a core of her religion, so she doesn't eat meat. I am a vegan and I absolutely despise when people use animal cruelty as a reason to hate on Muslims. 70% of all UK animals live in factory farm conditions. If you care so much about the plight of animals you should look to your own consumer behaviour. Halal slaughter I imagine grew from a want to respect animals anyway, the slaughter method is just a bit outdated. In my mind no way of killing an animal who wants to live is respectful.

On a side note in terms of breaking laws it's interesting how killing is perfectly legal in this country. It's even legal in the UK to kill your pet dog to eat, although there are some limitations put in place for hygiene reasons. Makes blessings look pale in comparison, right?

PrincessNutNutRoast · 23/12/2020 11:30

I didn't know that. But how could you lie to a police officer and not be doing either of these things?

Brahumbug · 23/12/2020 12:20

I certainly don't use animal cruelty to hate on muslims, I I don't hate muslims or any other group, I detest the religion not the follower. The slaughter I oppose is unstunned, whether that be hall or kosher. I am a vegetarian by the way.

Brahumbug · 23/12/2020 12:24

@Princessnutnutroast

I didn't know that. But how could you lie to a police officer and not be doing either of these things?

It would only become an offense if you make a statutory declaration, such as under oath, filling in a passport application, tax return etc. Also it has to be shown that your new what you where saying was false and not merely mistaken.

If you're mistaken then it's not lying anyway...

So if a detective investigating a crime asks you if you heard or saw anything, and you lie and say you didn't when you did...that's not a crime as long as you're not under oath or signing an official statement? If you're just being questioned on your doorstep? How could that not be perverting the course of justice?

TheBuffster · 23/12/2020 13:00

If you are vegetarian then obviously you understand that most people eat meat. If you do a little research into slaughter methods you'd agree halal is a drop in a cruelty ocean. Unless you regularly lecture your friends on their own animal cruelty I am afraid you are unfairly targeting Islam. (I really hope you don't do this though because we already have a reputation for being preachy!)
Fyi as a vegetarian you are complicit in animal cruelty. Not having a go, I was vegetarian for many years, but just stating facts. Therefore one could argue you are being hypocritical with your stance on halal as dairy is as cruel an industry.

Brahumbug · 23/12/2020 14:40

@theBuffster

All animal slaughter is wrong, unstunned slaughter is worse, there is nothing unfair in targeting the cruelest practices. Again you are making assumptions, why not ask before whipping out the condemnation? The only dairy I have comes from my friends small holding where the animals live out a natural life, I have nothing produced by the dairy industry. My chickens provide my eggs. some of them have stopped laying, but will have a free range life until they die of natural causes.
.

TheBuffster · 23/12/2020 14:45

Whipping out the condemnation? Pot and kettle springs to mind. I'd recommend Earthling Ed's take on backyard eggs if you are interested in ending animal cruelty. Not going to argue anymore as you are of course entitled to your own views, I just consider them to be rather generalized and divisive.

SharonasCorona · 23/12/2020 16:24

I totally with the @TheBuffster . Great to see such a reasonable, thoughtful person on MN. Flowers
