Pajama bottoms with backside seams are unhygenic

Fangtiger · 18/12/2020 11:10

Am I the only person who has a problem with the backside seam on pajama bottoms? The seam goes up my bum so I end up wearing night time knickers underneath to stop that happening and to stop having to wash my pjs every day. Do pj bottoms without a backside seam exist? Someone told me M&S had some, but can't find them.

My gyn said pants at night cause increased risk of UTIs and Thrush. I always let mine air out overnight, otherwise it feels all sweaty.

I'm 54 and have always worn pants with a oversized t-shirt, never had a UTI or thrush..

snookercue · 20/12/2020 08:41

It's interesting the posters saying their 'gyn' told them not to wear pants in bed due to increased risk of thrush etc, surely these posters have a gyn becaue they have issues down there? Same as if a GP said don't wear them, they wouldn't volunteer that information if you went in to discuss an ear infection etc. I'm taking a guess the posters who have been clinically advised against pants at night already have gynaecological problems. For the average Joe, nothing bad is happening by wearing pants at night.

kowari · 20/12/2020 08:41

If you sleep naked what do you do if your kids need you in the night? Or if there was an emergency, have you got something to hand to put on?
I can't sleep naked, I've tried and I hate it, I have to have at least undies and a vest in the middle of summer. Even if I could though, my 14 year old DS comes to my bed for a goodnight cuddle, and I go to him or weekend mornings sometimes. We both always wear pyjamas!

StarlightLady · 20/12/2020 08:47

As for getting up for emergencies, the naked form won’t scar a child for life and l have a wonderful invention called a dressing gown which hangs on the back of the bedroom door.

As for people out and about without their knix on, particularly in the summer, as @tsnookercue says, hey don’t turn a funny colour.

Thinking about it I suppose if I had a zip up dressing gown or a nightie I could throw on quickly it would be ok... I live in a hot country so it would be good to be able to sleep naked but I can't get my head round it 😝

I either - go to them naked. They're young enough that they give zero fucks about nudity still.

Or grab my dressing gown which is always hanging on the back of my bedroom door on the way.

I wear PJs before bed so they only get taken off at bedtime if I'm hot or for sex. So either way they're also right by the bed. So if I was getting up for more than just to go and settle a child it's all of 10 seconds to get PJs on.

StarlightLady · 20/12/2020 08:56

“Hey dont turn a funny colour” = “They don’t turn a funny colour”.

Or american, where it’s as normal to have an annual fanny check as it is to see the dentist. GYN tends to be US usage.

Again though, we’re talking about population data vs anecdata. It’s a mumsnet thing- if you say “vaccines prevent flu”, you’ll get a load of posters saying well I had the vaccine and still got flu, as if their personal experience disproves all the scientific research.

So in the pants case wearing them increases your risk of UTI’s, thrush, BV etc. It means x number of women out of 100 will suffer if they wear pants, but a lower number out of 100 will if they don’t.

It doesn’t mean if you wear pants you will suffer, it means you are more likely to. So if you are prone to that sort of infection or want to avoid one, best to wear cotton pants and not tights, no close fitting pants in bed etc.

ReallyLazy · 20/12/2020 09:03

Sadly I am prone to thrush. I'm hygienic, just more likely to get it than most. I can't wear pants in bed as I would get thrush. Similar issue with wearing tight jeans too often. The need to breathe is a real thing but you probably won't notice an issue unless you are an unlucky sod who gets thrush often.

ReallyLazy · 20/12/2020 09:05

Bit of a cross post there @bluebluezoo!

StarlightLady · 20/12/2020 09:11

Do some of you never get laid? By the time you get all your layers off, the moment of passion must almost be gone! Hmm

I'm currently single, but have no issues undressing for sex at night just as I would undress for sex in the daytime Confused.

Bless you. Maybe their moments of passion are somewhat stronger or less fleeting than yours- I think it's rather unusual to feel up for it but then decide it's not worth the effort because there is clothing in the way.
StarlightLady · 20/12/2020 09:35

Above posters; surely you appreciated that my comments about getting were tongue in cheek! I much prefer day time sex anyway!

I still wouldn’t wear knix or PJs to bed though, unless hospitalised.

Do you wrap gifts, Starlight? 😁 There’s something to be said for delayed gratification.
StarlightLady · 20/12/2020 09:54

@LeSangeEstDansLarbre - Yes l do wrap gifts. In pretty paper. Not in PJs. Pretty and PJs seem something of a contradiction. I’ve got some nice lingerie, but that’s for wearing under daytime attire.

Stillgoings · 20/12/2020 09:58

I've got a very sensitive system and am firmly in the fanny breathing camp. I wear a night shirt to bed (in case of a fire ) and no pants. I often wear pajamas in the evening but I could never wear them without pants underneath...always a fresh pair...PJ's don't need to.be fresh but pants do. But like I say I have sensitive system and its easily set off Grin

cuppateabiscuits · 20/12/2020 10:02

@AlmostAJillSandwich

If you fart in it, regardless of seam location, particles are going everywhere.....
😂
IcedPurple · 20/12/2020 10:08

Unless you sleep in a vacuum sealed sleeping bag, there's air under the duvet.

Well, exactly!

Knickers aren't vacuum sealed. They don't form a hermetic seal around your arse. Plenty of air can circulate if you're worried about fanny suffocation.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 20/12/2020 10:21

Although, what a brilliant idea... I am pregnant and it's making me do the most horrendous farts, especially at night! Some hermetically sealed knickers might be just the thing for it. Although DH might send me into garden to take them off... I wouldn't want to release a whole night's worth of noxious gasses in one go.

I believe it's possible to get underwear with filters (charcoal?) to lessen farty stenches. My SIL was seriously contemplating buying some for my brother, who apparently drops the most horrendous farts.
Sgtmajormummy · 20/12/2020 10:35

In my recent lockdown research Grin I found that 3x 8 hours wearing pyjamas in bed is nowhere near as dirtying as 1x 24 hours around the house.
Even just relaxing all day your body sweat is different (and yes, I do wear antiperspirant).
So going comando in sleep pyjamas doesn’t get them dirty after one use, unless your genitalia need extra protection.

OHolyTights · 20/12/2020 13:23

I have been wondering, as a result of this thread, what those people do who go to the shops in their night attire. In the past and clutching my pearls in one hand and an avocado in the other, I would be thinking 'what on earth is she doing, coming to the shops not dressed?!' Now I will just be wondering 'is she a bloomers wearer or not under those PJs?!'

MiddlesexGirl · 20/12/2020 15:43

This. It's not rocket science and it's not an old wives tale. Just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't stop it from being scientific fact.

Firmly in the nightie (camisole/slip/lingerie type) and no knickers camp. I feel comfy - good for all temperatures, sexy if required and hygienic.

SpudsandGravy · 20/12/2020 15:46

I think you may be overthinking it. The seam prolly won't attract poo, but if it does we won't become ill from the presence of a little bit of untestable poo in our PJ pants for a few days.
