AIBU - I've cancelled Christmas

This morning I cancelled our Christmas plans. I won't go into the outing family dynamics of who was invited but I can say that I was railroaded into doing Christmas lunch once again because of other peoples laziness and reluctance to put their hand in their deep pockets.

I've just had enough. I have a bag of shit going on in my life right now and we are neighbouring a hotspot that will soon spread into where I live. No one cares about bringing Covid into my house so now I am putting my foot down and have said NO. The shit will hit the fan and I will be persona non grata but I am overwhelmed at the moment and no one gives a shit about my MH or my nuclear family's Christmas and I have had enough.

Apparently, they are very upset. I am very upset about always carrying the load for everyone else and that I was put in a position of having 5 extra people come over to my house when I only invited 2 of them.

You’re mental health is important too. Be kind to yourself

YANBU even in a normal year without the added health concerns of COVID to think about. Enjoy your Christmas!

If its more than one other house hold, remember when the message does arrive, just say "well you and xxx can Still meet up if you all feel comfortable to do that together. We just won't be joining in this year."

There is still food in shops. There is still time to book a click and collect from most supermarkets. There are crackers and festive napkins.

We cancelled plans this week. We are due to still see my brother on 27th, but that will be low key, walk and home for a buffet type affair. (Wish I could relocate that to a restaurant)

Plans change. This year could be the start of a new way of doing things. (I definitely want to go away next year if we can!)

Well done OP!

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2020 20:20

That’s pretty unanimous yanbu

MargosKaftan · 16/12/2020 20:40

Op remember, if they chose not to celebrate, that's their choice, you haven't cancelled Christmas, you've cancelled doing it for them.

Wish I had your courage OP! Like you, I've been railroaded into taking on three extra people - over three days - and I'm going to make a stand and say I'm not happy about it. You have inspired me, thank you and well done!

I'm going to make a stand and say I'm not happy about it.

Don't just say you're not happy about it. Tell them you're not doing it.

Look at the figures. They are rising. What did it for me was thinking of my DH and DC. I actually know quite a few people who have had Covid. Some got off very lightly and some didn't. I don't want it. I don't want my DH to get it and I don't want my DC to be the unlucky few DC who end up in hospital either.I'm done with thinking of everyone else when their own Covid curbs are slack.

2021 is the year of the "No".

No, that doesn't suit me.
No, that's not good for my family.
No, do it yourself.
No
