To not want his stupid Christmas dinner

Whattimeisdinner · 15/12/2020 08:10

My BIL cooks Christmas dinner every year without fail. Sounds great but he cooks Christmas dinner and summer BBQs & NEVER cooks at any other time for his family.

He is very upset that we won’t be joining them on Christmas Day this year but AIBU to feel relieved?

I really won’t miss him strutting around in his Santa apron swigging mulled wine this year.
I also won’t have to endure him carving the turkey at the head of the table like he’s some sort of God.
Does anyone else have a DH who does this or is is just my poor sister?

How mean spirited/ unreasonable am I on a scale of 1-10?
(10 being Very unreasonable/mean spirited.)

Prick!

Cheeseandwin5 · 15/12/2020 11:42

Totally 10.

If his DW wrote in complaining then, I would understand, but you obviously don't like him and your complaints are purely based on this.

How would you know what his practices are for the rest of the year? Why is there no mention of anyone else having a problem?
It seems to me that you want to be the star of the show and are getting peeved of that someone else has taken that the limelight.
Maybe you just relax and enjoy yourself, or at least let everyone else enjoy themselves and not have to put up with your theatrics

NewYearNewPlumbing · 15/12/2020 11:43

He clearly is a pain about the performance cooking, and a pompous git, but just look the other way, have another glass, and as they say on THAT song 'be glad it's him instead of you' in the kitchen.

gabsdot45 · 15/12/2020 11:44

I always wonder about people who only cook on special occasions like this.
Can they actually cook well? Surely it's a skill that needs regular practice.

I'm loving the go to MN response though. Obviously there's nothing but deep, ugly hated for your brother in law that probably has nothing to do with his stupid bloody santa outfit. Sure you're not secretly in love with him, @Whattimeisdinner shock grin

Damn it Brum.
You’ve got me sussed 😂😂

I am on side for the men for a minute, well one man in particular, and it was many years ago. My late Grandfather used to always cook the whole Christmas dinner. He had a smallholding, and grew everything that was on the dinner plates, and he had a few turkeys, He killed one of the Turkeys, plucked it, and roasted it, and cooked every single thing for dinner, and yes, was at the top of the table to carve the bird. He made the Christmas pudding himself also.

He always knew that my Grandmother was a great country style cook. but he liked to give her a day of rest on Christmas day. We usually had about 12 people eating there on Christmas day.

There was nothing about glory cooking here, as my Grandparents were very down to earth country types, who loved family visiting.

Hellotheresweet · 15/12/2020 12:14

Curious why you’d name change OP

Multiple posts about hating your brother in law perhaps?!

What a cock! I bet his poor wife never hears the end of how much he cooks for his family. I wonder who does ALL the shopping for those meals?

Enjoy your Xmas this year.

And the washing up?
Felifox · 15/12/2020 12:28

As long as he buys the ingredients, does all the prep, clears up the kitchen and does the washing up that's fine.

Gingerkittykat · 15/12/2020 12:35

My BIL is also like this, I have been saying I'm not doing the family Christmas dinner every year for the past few years but keep going back.

He cooks turkey, duck, ham and also beef if his DD is there. There's carrots, parsnips, sprouts, turnip and cauliflower cheese as well as the good bits like pigs in blankets and then piles the plates so high you don't know where to start eating.

The best year was when we went in the huff and took his dinner up to his bedroom, still it meant not having to sit at the table with him.

He never cooks the rest of the year, or does the washing up.

Sometimes, I bloody love MN Grin

Well, that’s a good question!
My sister does the shopping and prepping. I know this because I help her when I’m there in the morning.
When everything is peeled and chopped BIL takes over.
I like the idea of a ‘Glory cook’ apron! I might get one made! 😂

The food is good, yes!

Your scale of 1-10 is as confusing as the new GCSE results Grin

GrinThe apron... maybe not, for the sake of family harmony. Many years ago, a group of us organised a barbecue for work. There was one guy in the organising group. Guess who somehow managed to park themselves at the barbecue, with workmates praising him for his hard work, turning burgers and sausages.

He had done absolutely none of the preparation, including all the shopping, bringing the food to the location, even putting it on the barbecue.

But somehow, there he was, looking like he had done the lot. I didn't let it pass though Grin

Eleganz · 15/12/2020 12:48

He's not really cooking though is he, he is just drinking and heating things. If you haven't done any of the prep then you haven't cooked properly.

Luckily most of the men in my life know their way around a kitchen so I don't have this problem. I have had some experience of the summer BBQ performance cook. They are invariably shit either serving raw or burnt food as they don't actually have any clue how to cook meat.
