Bookriddle · 14/12/2020 00:17

So ive not long woke up and decided to have a midnight snack, for some reason i was craving coco pops and remembered we had a box in the cupboard!

So i have gone and opened the box up and its full of snacks(no coco pops) some of the stuff is from the weekly shopping that i thought disappears quite quickly and stuff she obviously buys here and there!

Aibu to not mention to my wife i have found her hiding place for snacks and just help myself whenever i fancy a snack!

@Letsrunabath

I have a secret stash of quality chocolates, my husband and son would eat them in one sitting. I have one every other day with a coffee an thoroughly enjoy it. Leave the secret stash alone.
I like your style Letsrunabath Smile

Why this obsession with private snacks on mumsnet, in our house we all share

Menofsteel · 14/12/2020 08:44

Why are people hiding food? I don’t get it (admit I’m not very food driven so I probably just don’t understand)

shouldisay · 14/12/2020 08:50

If we don't hide our secret stash, the kids will eat it and no one ever owns up. What's wrong with having a secret stash of diabetes inducing snacks? Perfectly normal if you ask me. Especially in a house with three teens and one pre teen. We have a corner in a never entered cupboard. Kids never go in there because it's where the paperwork hides, birth certificates and such. Great for hiding my chocolate and beef flavoured monster munch.

CorianderBlues · 14/12/2020 08:50

OP are you cheating on your wife?

(This is MN, it's a standard assumption)

NoSensei · 14/12/2020 08:50

Id find it odd if my husband had a stash because we both have snacks that the other wouldn’t eat, so if I found a stash I’d definitely let him know!

Write a note it in or add coco pops to the shopping list Grin

CrotchBurn · 14/12/2020 08:51

Well I guess we now know why the UK is one of the most overweight countries in the world. A snack is something you grab on the road to tide you over, not stash away your own personal archive of crap to feast on

Bookriddle · 14/12/2020 08:51

Sorry i ended up going to bed on a empty stomach because there was no cocopops, i was gutted! Tonight im gonna say to my DW that i have noticed a box of cocopops in the cupboard and i really fancy some, see what her reaction is Grin

Can i just say aswell, this was ment as a lighthearted thread, no idea why my dw hidea them, im not a massive snack person

this!

of course no adult should have to hide the food they like from other adults to stop them scoffing it all but there's been enough posts on here over the years from women who've had their 'treats' eaten by their DH/DP to show that some people clearly do.

Fluffyandsilly · 14/12/2020 08:55

I have a DH who will hoover up chocolate, so sometimes I do hide stuff from him. I don’t think it’s a crime to want to get a look in on the treats!

He literally ate half a box of matchmakers in the time it took me to have a wee the other night.
All this bollocks about sharing everything as a family is fine if you have the same appetite for delicacies. Not so good if you like to have treats in, ready for when you fancy them, but your spouse will scarf down a family size chocolate bar in 30 seconds Grin

oohyoudevilyou · 14/12/2020 08:57

It never takes my family long to catch on to my stashes...they tend to help themselves from it for a few days until I notice and have to find another one. I don't know if it's just one sleuth that finds and raids it, if they work cooperatively, or independently but concurrently. Bastards.

Nottherealslimshady · 14/12/2020 08:58

I think the annoying thing would be that some of it is stuff from the weekly shop for everyone that she's taken for herself only.
People assuming its because others eat everything, it could just as easily be so she can binge without anyone knowing or hog all the treat so no one else can have any.

A box of coco pops is a weird hiding place which suggests that others in the house dont often eat sweet things otherwise her stash would have been found ages ago.

Aprilx · 14/12/2020 09:00

I find the idea of a secret stash really weird, do people honestly do this?

I don’t know why I would hide food from my husband, if we don’t have enough snacks then we buy so that we do. We don’t hide or “steal” from each other, we share.

Chanjer · 14/12/2020 09:00

The only reason to hide food is to stop somebody else eating it.

Or so you can eat it yourself 🤔

I'd just re-hide it somewhere different

phoenixrosehere · 14/12/2020 09:03

I thought everyone had a secret stash?

Nope. One of us just picks up snacks if they run out. Husband goes for a walk almost every night and I do most of the morning and afternoon school runs. There is a Co-op, Big Tesco , Tesco Express, and a M&S all under 15 minutes walking distance and that doesn’t include the area I work which has a M&S, Sainsbury’s, Tesco all within the same block so easy to grab something.

The most we do is put something up really high so the boys (5,3) can’t reach it (climbers) and tell them no if they ask.

Branleuse · 14/12/2020 09:08

why the hell did she choose a cocopops box. Surely thats just asking for it to be found. A box of branflakes she could have got away with for longer

Meowchickameowmeow · 14/12/2020 09:09

Don't be a snack wanker, buy and build your own stash.

ButtonMoonLoon · 14/12/2020 09:11

Ooh I think I’d have a bit of fun with this 😀

You could surprise her and pop a few extra things in there that are different from the rest- I highly recommend Lindt chocolate balls!

birdseedpie · 14/12/2020 09:12

@DowntonCrabby

I changed my vote, you need to tell her so she can find a new hiding place. We favour the boot of the car for maximum child/ teen proof.
Be very suspicious if they offer to scrape the car for you then!
Waveysnail · 14/12/2020 09:13

We have snack spots. Not secret but everyone knows you dont touch. Mines top shelf in cupboard. Dh is top shelf of another cupboard. It's more.to hide it from the ravenous kids

Oeliilio · 14/12/2020 09:17

I’m genuinely surprised how many people have stashed, we are a large family and we just have cupboards. No one binges.

Special things, like birthday chocolates or from something special, are usually shared to some degree but never touched without express permission. Everyone knows what everyone eats here, I’ve always thought secret eating is the road to unhealthy eating.

wizzbangfizz · 14/12/2020 09:20

This is fucking bizarre behaviour from grown adults - midnight snacking and hiding food Confused

Nah. It's normal, you just don't do it Grin
Branleuse · 14/12/2020 09:23

Its not bizarre. Otherwise teenagers steal bloody everything before ive had a chance to eat it.

Elieza · 14/12/2020 09:23

I learned at an early age to hide sweets from my dad.

My mum wouldn’t touch them but my dad had no willpower. He would happily pinch a few of my 10p mixture sweets I’d spent my pocket money on in the ice cream van if I went out for half an hour if I didn’t hide them.

Keeping in mind you only got 2x2p chews and 5 1p sweets and two ha’penny sweets, I was usually gutted when I found out.

The key here people is to get a lockable box. It’s easier to hide the key to that than it is to hide bulky choc etc! If anyone finds the box they can’t get into it. Grin

It doesn’t bode well for student life in shared accommodation if the dc can’t respect other people’s food and plough through all the crap in the first day of it arriving from Asda!
