Yes, it's really happening 🙄

Why are people ringing bells for santa? I don’t get it.

He’s a fictional character that’s not affected by the virus.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 13/12/2020 13:17

😞

AppleKatie · 13/12/2020 13:17

Eh? Have I missed something, what’s wrong with this?

shitinmyhandsandclap · 13/12/2020 13:17

Fuck knows, it's all over our local FB group, loads of streets taking part

OytheBumbler · 13/12/2020 13:18

They're ringing the church bells near me. It's sweet if you have young kids.

Fatladyslim · 13/12/2020 13:18

Heaven forbid a nice activity for children on christmas eve. Oh gosh, you might hear the sound of some bells ringing for a minute or so. How inconvenient, I hope you don't live near a church.

littlebillie · 13/12/2020 13:18

I've heard it's silent night at 6pm which would be lovely

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2020 13:20

Surely little kids should be listening for the faint tinkle of reindeer sleigh bells not making a racket?

(This provides an excuse for a parent to consume a Lindt chocolate deer on Xmas Eve, to get an appropriate bell)

Anniegetyourgun · 13/12/2020 13:21

Ach, noisy feckers. Clapping, fireworks, now bell ringing. I reckon it's all a marketing ploy by the makers of earmuffs.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 13/12/2020 13:21

I love the wording 'everyone will come outside and ring a bell...

Will we?!

AnaisNun · 13/12/2020 13:22

Oh my kids nursery have bought them all bells to ring on Christmas Eve. Little one would be hugely disappointed if we didn’t join in now, but I’m hugely annoyed. Cant bear this faux “blitz spirit singing jazz songs down the tubes” nonsense.

curlycat · 13/12/2020 13:22

This started in the town I live in. I think its lovely for young kids who have had a shit year. If you don't want to join in then don't. No one is forcing you.
They have also raised a lot on money for the local Maggie's Centre

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/12/2020 13:24

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee apparently everyone will be doing it here too.

Except I won’t. I’ll not long have got in from work and will hopefully be having a nice glass of something by then!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 13/12/2020 13:24

Apprently we should do this at midnight on New Years eve too.

Its a nice idea though. Long as people don't get shamed for not taking part like they did with the clapping

MrsMcTats · 13/12/2020 13:24

Most Christmas activities have been cancelled - no nativities, no santa visits, no carol concerts, no christingle. I don't see the issue of getting in the spirit and encouraging children to ring bells for a couple of minutes for a bit of magic and fun. If quite a few do it, I expect it will sound lovely.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 13/12/2020 13:25

It's not raising money for charity here, it's just another stunt purely for FB likes.

Simplyunacceptable · 13/12/2020 13:26

I think it’s a lovely idea personally. Still remember the year my Dad went outside on Christmas Eve night and rang a bell in the street. I obviously laid in bed thinking it was Santa, it was so exciting.

winterbabythistime · 13/12/2020 13:27

And? What's the problem?

Most children would be getting to go to church, panto, have Christmas parties and shows, visit family. This year there's none of that.

I don't see why 5 minutes of jingle bells ringing to make some small children happy is so offensive tbh.

AlwaysLatte · 13/12/2020 13:28

I don't think mine would as they're 12 and 10 now and it would probably be declared 'gay' . But I think you'd have to be a bit bah-humbug to mind hearing a few bells on Christmas Eve.
nice bells though please, leave the saucepans in the kitchen!

Angel2702 · 13/12/2020 13:28

My kids have not been able to do a single festive activity. Now my eldest is isolating so we haven’t even been able to go for a walk to see the lights. This is just a bit of fun and just something they can take part in when everything else is cancelled.

Maybe we should forgo the mince pie and milk for Father Christmas too as he’s just a fictional character.

Don’t want to take part then don’t but no need for the sneering at people who are.

TheTrashBagIsOursCmonTrashBag · 13/12/2020 13:29

I don’t really mind what people do and if either of mine want to join then we will. But I’m not sure we’ve got any bells now I think about it.

I don't understand what the issue is. I am guessing you started this thread to win *cool girl of mumsnet' award. Its sooo edgy not to take part in things.

BrumBoo · 13/12/2020 13:32

Me either. It was an absolute bore with the clapping, but at least that had somewhat of a real meaning behind it (well, the first time before it became a virtue signalling competition). Making a racket for an imaginary character who's 'coming' regardless? Nah, sod off. My kids are already over excited and being peeled off the ceiling every night since the 1st, without adding this nonsense.
LisaLee333 · 13/12/2020 13:32

@shitinmyhandsandclap

Lighten up Scrooge. Grin

It's just a bit of fun for the kids.

Bet it's a laugh a minute at YOUR house. Wink

Oh and YABU. I think it's a wonderful idea!
