Oh it’s a bit of fun that some people will find joy in, and for those that don’t it’ll last just a couple of minutes. Let the people who want to do it have some fun without this ridiculous superiority to show you’re above anything that might have arisen on social media.

CalishataFolkart · 13/12/2020 19:41

Will it happen next year and become yet another “tradition” or will Santa not need the magic when the pandemic is over? In addition to the Santa grotto visits, panto, nativity, carols, Xmas party, Elf on the Shelf, Xmas Eve box that are essential for the kiddies?

We should all buy shares in sleigh bells because someone will commercialise this.

Angel2702 · 13/12/2020 19:59

@Cam2020

Just becasue people aren't enthusiastic about yet another stand on the doorstep performance, doesn't mean they don't participate in, or enjoy, any other Chrsitmas traditions! It's not all or nothing...
And you can choose not to take part in something without looking down your nose at the idea or people who do want to do it.

@DappledThings

The night before Xmas book (which we reuse) Does anyone actually enjoy reading this? I never had it as a child so first encountered it when it was given to my DC this year. They asked for it a couple of times and it's just awful. It barely scans half the time and DS(4) is most put out by Santa being described as tiny on a tiny sleigh.

I'm delighted he's declared it "silly" and we can get rid of it. Genuinely baffles me that it's considered such a classic when it's so badly written.

Yes we love reading it. It is a classic because a lot of the ideas and traditions we still associate with Christmas came from this poem including the names of the reindeer.

"Will it happen next year and become yet another “tradition” or will Santa not need the magic when the pandemic is over?"

It's Christmas spirit, not magic.

Lots of children have watched the Christmas chronicles this year, he needs Christmas spirit to fly

🎶He's making a list, donning full PPE
Gonna find out who's Dettolled the tree
Santa Claus is comin' to town

He sees you when you're coughin'
He knows what risks you take
He knows if you have quarantined
So be good for goodness sake

Santa Claus is comin' to town
Ring those bells and banish that frown
Least he ain't that mop-blonde Tory clown 🎵

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 13/12/2020 20:37

I really like this idea 🤷‍♀️

HoboSexualOnslow · 13/12/2020 21:20

I'm surprised so many people have bells????

Arthersleep · 13/12/2020 21:22

We're doing the opposite on our street. At 6pm, those elderly neighbours/people with grown children are going to jingle some bells discretely and we're all going to take the young children out to see if they can hear Santa's sleigh approaching. Our neighbours are all very happy to do this as many of them haven't been able to been so involved with their own families this year. As parents we are happy because, if the kids hear him approaching, they will need to go to bed extra early in order to be asleep when he arrives, whilst we all get to sit and enjoy a drink, if it goes to plan.

LaceyBetty · 13/12/2020 21:25

It's a nice idea I guess, but I honestly can't keep up with all the Christmas "Magic" anymore.

Arthersleep · 13/12/2020 21:32

I also love Twas The Night Before Christmas. I still have my 40 year old pop up edition and the kids love it!

@AlexaPlayWhiteNoise @Soubriquet Easy way to see which houses have children in them. Doesn’t anyone think about security these days?

I'm still not following exactly. To steal my kids? or rob the house?

I own a large security guard boxer DH. And a dog that barks if a flea farts a mile away. And our DC sleep in our bed. And I won't actually be leaving the door unlocked for Santa to get in --we have a fireplace anyway) Grin

Well I think the point is Christmas spirit is low this year compared to normal, non covid years. So no, not an every year thing, more like an every pandemic thing.

If you don't want to do it, don't. There's no reason to piss on the chips of other people who do find enjoyment out of these things. It's bizarre, you don't get it so no one else should be able to get enjoyment from it? Weird!

Are your children usually locked up like prisoners, only allowed to be seen outside of the house on scheduled door stop bell ringing evenings? (weird clause to put in, you must be kicking yourself!)

myhobbyisouting · 14/12/2020 00:41

Would you like me to set your brain in gear for you @CalishataFolkart? Or do you generally just walk around repeating yourself until you get a suitable answer? Confused

I can't tell you what will happen next year love x

Soubriquet · 14/12/2020 04:24

Ah of course

I mean I normally smuggle my children out of the house under the cover of darkness. It means we have to arrive at school really early and leave really late, but that stops people know which houses have children in them Hmm

I was corrected that it’s not magic, it’s Xmas spirit but my question wasn’t answered so I rephrased. I’m not pissing on anyone’s chips or saying I don’t get it or saying no one else should get enjoyment from it.

People have listed all the things children have missed out on this year and it struck me that the number of events and “traditions’ have increased over the years. I wondered if this was going to be yet another thing that will be deemed to be essential to children’s experience of Xmas or if it will be dropped next year.

I don’t tend to ask questions if I’m not interested in the answer which is why I rephrased. “I don’t know” is a “suitable” answer so thank you.

I'm sure the big FC has made a note of all the Scrooge's on this thread and has lined up a load of coal for your stockings.

Yeah I’m sure not standing on my doorstep like a dick is going to affect what people buy me for Christmas ... Funny that this was touted as being for the NHS not long ago and now everyone is fucked off with them they’ve changed it to Father Christmas.
hardboiledeggs · 14/12/2020 08:09

Just people trying to spread some joy for their Children. I fail to see why it would bother anyone.

It this wasn’t about kids when it was spoken about months ago, it was meant to be for the nhs !
