To ask what is your 'side hustle' and how much do you earn?

MisterMakerMakes · 12/12/2020 22:03

I need to preface this with apologising for using the term 'side hustle'. I know it is hated by many Grin

I work part time but over the years I have supplemented my income with various side hustles. Cleaning, buying and selling, cake decorating, etc. Now I tutor and earn about 350 a month extra.

What is your side hustle if you have one and how much do you earn each month from it?

Used to make a fairly good income selling crafts I make, however over this year the market is now so saturated with people who have started doing it over covid. Sadly they price their work too cheap and it’s affected a lot of sellers. It’s not worth my time anymore unless I’m selling / hiring to a wedding venue or event dresser.

NeedToKnow101 · 13/12/2020 10:44

@RaspberryCoulis

My side-hustle has progressed into a full hustle. When my kids were small I started doing a bit of writing, and work for a question and answer text message service. Then as the kids got older and went to school I had more time and took on more work... here we are 12 or 13 years later and I can't really imagine having a "proper job" ever again. Since April I've earned around £2k a month, for around 20 hours a week absolute maximum.

But as with any job it's all about reputation and it takes a while to build yourself up to that level.

What does this entail?

NeedToKnow101 · 13/12/2020 10:46

Sorry I see you've answered this already..

ThreeTwoOneGoo · 13/12/2020 10:51

@ArosGartref

Checking DH's pockets before they go in the wash. Averaging about £4.30 a month.

This made me laugh Grin

JokeTheCoalman · 13/12/2020 10:53

I take in ironing, but none of your business how much

Yohoheaveho · 13/12/2020 11:04

You're all so industrious!
I'm always busy with various hobbies and interests....but still too lazy to figure out a way to get paid for doing things I enjoy 🙈

SpaceRaiders · 13/12/2020 11:10

I sell clothes and toys on Ebay, usually stuff that the dc have outgrown or no longer want, I make around £900 on the months I do sell. Pre covid, I also let out my spare room on Airbnb, that was an easy £700 pm on a good month. Then property letting which I don’t really consider a side hustle. I also have a chunky commercial cleaning contract which I subcontract, which is another £1000 pm. I’ve been toying with starting Amazon FBA for the last 6 months, I just need to knuckle down and get on with it!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/12/2020 11:23

Does what someone nearly got into count? Smile
I did the wedding flowers for a couple of very dear friends and found out afterwards that loads had asked for the name of their "florist"

I'd only done it for love (and really enjoyed it), but after working out the difference between what it cost me and what the pros charge I sometimes think I missed an opportunity

thosetalesofunexpected · 13/12/2020 11:24

Have you any qualms about your side hustle?

AliceBlueGown · 13/12/2020 11:56

£900 a month on ebay - that is a lot of toys and childrens clothing you are selling.

Diddlysquatty · 13/12/2020 11:58

Matched betting was the most lucrative int the short term £300-900pm but boring and time consuming and gets harder when you’ve exhausted sign up offers

My actual one is being a semi professional classical musician playing an in-demand instrument. £50-100 per concert rocking up on the day for afternoon rehearsal and evening performance.
But obviously none of that since March

TerfTerfTerf · 13/12/2020 12:02

I did matched betting for 6 months (made £2k) but found it very boring.

I do inventories for rental properties through a specialist property management company, which is fun and soothes my nosiness about other peoples houses! Depending on how many jobs I choose to do, I earn £100-£300 per month, self employed. The company employs people all over the UK to do these, as well as EPCs and other tenancy things. Lots of people do it full time but I prefer my regular NHS part time job with this as a side-hustle Grin
If you're interested, DM me and I'll give you the company details. It's totally legit! But you do need your own iPad to do the work - they provide the software and all the training and you don't pay anything.

ThePittts · 13/12/2020 12:12

I sell plants on facebook, made about £250 this year, not much but something I really enjoy

Watching with interest!

Is matched betting very risky and time consuming?

It's not even remotely risky. It's a bit time consuming at first until you get the hang of it.
Othering · 13/12/2020 14:09

Joke - the cost of ironing services is literally all over the internet, so the secrecy is ridiculous.

I took that to mean that the number of customers was none of our business. So even if the going rate can be found easily, she's not going to tell us how much money she makes per month or year, which would totally depend on how many customers or jobs she's taking on.
DualDarlek · 13/12/2020 14:23

Stooze (money made greatly reduced from previous years)

Car boot sale

Prepaid cards which include a discount

Property - all taxes paid

Auction

elfycat · 13/12/2020 14:25

@HopeClearwater

No, no qualms. Thanks for asking.

IFuckLobstersForMoney · 13/12/2020 14:29

Tutoring. Circa £500 a month and I’m not working very hard for that (4ish hrs a week). Thinking of making it a bigger part of my income to get out of the classroom longer term if I can.

caringcarer · 13/12/2020 14:37

I used to tutor £30 an hour for about 15 years.
I used to examine A level scrips for major exam board for 25 years.
I have bought a couple of properties done them up and flipped them.
Now I let out 6 btl homes.
My main job Is foster care so I am home all day.

SpnBaby1967 · 13/12/2020 14:44

I run a karate club, it makes maybe £200 a month as we purposefully charge low fees to make it accessible to all.

We dont take any payment out of it as such, it all goes back into the club. But it is used to pay our karate costs such as personal liability insurance, licenses, grading fees etc. We used to take £50 a month (there are two of us) but we lost half our students when lockdown 1.0 shut us down. Hoping to build it up next year again
