To ask what is your 'side hustle' and how much do you earn?

I need to preface this with apologising for using the term 'side hustle'. I know it is hated by many Grin

I work part time but over the years I have supplemented my income with various side hustles. Cleaning, buying and selling, cake decorating, etc. Now I tutor and earn about 350 a month extra.

What is your side hustle if you have one and how much do you earn each month from it?

I really wanted to start a kids’ pjs business on the side but I have absolutely NO idea where to start or how to do that. I’m not asking for anyone’s trade secrets but how can I find this out!?

TikTokFinger · 13/12/2020 00:18

We rent out a couple of properties in London as a side hustle. The gross income is about £6k per month. Net about £4K per month.

Ferrylights · 13/12/2020 00:20

Main full time job plus Local Authority registered cake decorator and I provide ad hoc admin/management services to my brother's building company and dog boarding for several regulars. Approx £500 - 800 A month extra but varies.

@chillimartini @Legalhelp for the hours you put in writing, children's publishing doesn't pay very well for most midlist writers. The 'big names' (increasing celebrities!) do very well but not so much the majority of us! Advances can be something like £5-8K for a middle grade debut and if you get that you've done very well indeed and royalities can be pennies per book! I went the traditional publishing route and have an agent, who sells my books to publishers.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/12/2020 00:25

Like a pp buy to let's. I also renovated a cpl of houses 2013/14/15.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 13/12/2020 00:45

I hope everyone is declaring their extra income for tax where appropriate

🤣 there’s always one I suppose.

Littleraindrop15 · 13/12/2020 00:56

@CaveMum ahh I see thanks x

Barmyfarmy · 13/12/2020 00:56

We rent out a holiday cottage- only make a small amount of profit for each stay but it's low effort and means we have a property for kids one day. This year has been quiet so a friend's daughter (19) has been staying there and paying rent to see if she can live alone as she plans to move out in the next year. We usually bring in a few thousand but we're breaking even to go easy on her!

We have a small business as part of our farm. We sell honey, eggs, flowers (I do wedding flowers and occasional funerals), plants, rent out barns for weddings. Income varies. This year has been good as we had an honesty box out in the lane with fruit, veg, eggs and flowers. People have been very generous.

Pre-Covid, occasional work on reception desks at conferences and other events (£100 a day gross)
Lodger (£400 a month)
Letting out second house (£800 a month gross)

For people who are matched betting and getting gubbed then you aren’t doing it properly!

Team profit only teaches you the basics, I wouldn’t rely on them to make sustainable income.

MB is awesome if you know how to avoid gubbing.

Lullabyebye · 13/12/2020 01:04

DH is a tutor and earns an extra £2k a month (before tax)

Thisendsnow · 13/12/2020 01:04

@AlohaMolly would love to know how you've got into this freelance if you don't mind sharing? part of my job is running the social media for the company and would love to look into doing more of this but haven't a clue how to go about it legitimately.

@crapmumalertttttttt would also love to know more about this too! I create multiple newsletters for the company and didn't realise it could be a skill I could earn from. Do you have an existing website / contacts to sell to?

I would love to break free from employment in 2021 and go fully digital Blush

fraudanddeception · 13/12/2020 01:07

Teach online mornings $1800 monthly (please don't ask me to refer you!)

Let out spare bit of house - variable.

But I don't have another 'job' except child rearing. So it's a side hustle to my husband's job, really.

thosetalesofunexpected · 13/12/2020 01:10

Me too.
Watching with child like curious and interest.,😕😊

thosetalesofunexpected · 13/12/2020 01:12

Good thread idea Op
On a more postive note

Inpersuitofhappiness · 13/12/2020 01:18

Shoe refurbs, selling on ebay, market researches. £900ish the past few months

Pyewhacket · 13/12/2020 01:45

I don’t have the time these days as I’m busy working in NHS critical Care but I used to make historical style wedding dresses : Victorian , Edwardian , Medieval , fantasy Game of Thrones stuff. All hand made to fit.

HappyHomeWorker · 13/12/2020 01:56

What a fascinating thread!

I would absolutely love some sort of side hustle but have zero confidence so it’s not looking likely for me any time soon.

What a busybody you are.

FWIW yes I am. I've been registered self employed since 2012 and my books have always been accurately kept. This year I've been glad of that - as those who incorrectly declared may have missed out on government support payments during this pandemic!

corkernewyorker · 13/12/2020 02:09

Lovely thread. I sing a few times a month. Crazy to be paid for something I love doing.

DryRoastPeanut · 13/12/2020 02:25

I normally work in theatre, I’ve not worked since March.
I started doing Airbnb in September as I have a gorgeous spare room and lots of spare time.
I’m pulling in about £100 a month which was exactly my target, for a few days work.

I guess if I wanted I could take more but it’s just enough to keep me happy for now. Easy money and often fun.

Sobeyondthehills · 13/12/2020 02:26

A couple of my friends do this, I spoke to him recently and he said while he missed the money, what he really missed was the buzz performing infront of people.

I am fairly sure if he could he would get a busking licence and do it that way

Furries · 13/12/2020 03:18

Seriously?! Getting gubbed is standard whether you’re a matched bettor or a mug punter. I’ve been both.

Doesn’t matter how you slice that loaf of bread, you will end up gubbed eventually.

Unless you have some amazing secret to avoid it?

Lollipity · 13/12/2020 07:58

I used to tutor and would make about £450 per month from that. I also worked in summer camps offering a niche activity, and would make £200 a day. Exam marking - although it was extremely boring and very time-consuming.

Now I let my house and after management fees make just over £1500 per month.

Edel2019 · 13/12/2020 08:16

I love this thread. I've tried a few "side hustles" but haven't been too successful
