Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

Totally depends on industry and company. Sounds quite an informal and old fashioned thing to me- kind of thing you’d get in a small-medium sized company that might be family run.

It’s not a thing where I work (semi public sector/380 employees).

I wouldn’t bank on it being a decent amount in this year of all years. Just make sure if it is an informal thing that he gets a share, but it may not be much if he’s not been there very long.

LemonadePockets · 12/12/2020 23:10

We’re a new catering business, opened during the pandemic and our staff have worked incredibly hard while we’ve got up and running so we give them £300 each at the start of the month rather than wait until their Christmas wage.

HintOfVintagePink · 12/12/2020 23:15

I’ve worked at the same place for 10 years and it’s varied from £50, £150, £300 to 20% of yearly salary then back to £300. It’s entirely discretionary and depends on so many factors. And good Lord don’t ever, ever ask about it, or even drop hints!

DH works for a large international company. They get a number of bonus payments through out the year that are linked to profit. Big variations but always a lovely boost no matter how small.

Ithinkim · 12/12/2020 23:17

DH usually gets a few thousand but this year no one in the company is getting one.

When they've had them before you need to work at the company for a full 12 months to qualify.

BeakyWinder · 12/12/2020 23:18

£400. I'm thrilled only been with the company 6 months (although I worked here previously) they also honoured my job offer despite being closed at the very start of lockdown. Very grateful.

FancySomeChips · 12/12/2020 23:19

A single Cadbury hero/celebration
Usually the crap one (Bounty I’m looking at you)

PontiacBandit · 12/12/2020 23:19

As others have said, company dependent. I've worked for many years with no bonus, just bottles of wine from suppliers shared out with the staff and when those dwindled it was more of raffle and you might get one of those bottles. My current company does offer a bonus in November wage slip, not expected but very appreciated. This year was £750.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2020 23:20

A lot of people get nothing. And even people who do usually get something might find they don't this year.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/12/2020 23:23

Not for profit sector for the last twenty years, so no.
One charity gave all staff a £20 voucher one year, I think this year there's some kind of hamper/festive treat instead of a staff party.

I would imagine that many orgs that are usually generous with bonuses will be more tempered this year, unless in a sector that is booming through the pandemic.

Ltdannygreen · 12/12/2020 23:26

The most we get is an extra 10% off 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sanityisaluxury · 12/12/2020 23:29

Third sector here, £50 high street voucher for all employees. Double hourly rate for the main days for those who are working.

Last year, an extra weeks pay for all employees.

SquirtleSquad · 12/12/2020 23:32

DH usually gets around the £5k mark but this year the company decided to cut bonuses for anyone beneath his level so he's put in a formal request to HR to gift his bonus to his team equally between them so about £500 each (they'd usually get £100 and a bottle of wine).
He's not sure if the company will allow it because it may not be fair to the other teams across the company who have had theirs cut but 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Blibbyblobby · 12/12/2020 23:39

@ArabellaScott

*I've never had one in any job I've done but my DH works in finance and gets £400-£500 in John Lewis vouchers plus a big hamper with champagne. An annual bonus between 10-15k depending on company performance and a yearly pay rise are the norm in his job*

Holy fuck!

Indeed.

In finance, bonuses are used like a variable component of your salary. So if the company is doing ok and you are meeting expectations for your role you will get a bonus. If you are doing well (or just ok but they think you might be at risk of sodding off and they don't want the hassle of replacing you) you will get a good bonus. If you are doing badly you'll get a not-so-good bonus. If you get no bonus at all (and assuming it's not a bad year across the board), they are telling you to resign so they don't have the bother of getting rid of you.

tinselfest · 12/12/2020 23:40

Over the years, I've had a whole variety ranging from a big fat zero to over a thousand pounds. And back again. Sometimes wine or chocolates. Last 4 years it has been a hamper.

PerfidiousAlbion · 12/12/2020 23:43

£300 John Lewis voucher and a £500 bonus this year.

I should be grateful but in previous years, bonuses have typically been 5% of salary, so thousands for most of us plus a Fortnums hamper.

alltoomuchrightnow · 12/12/2020 23:45

30 yrs of retail, various places.. never a bonus

alltoomuchrightnow · 12/12/2020 23:45

and just told no 2% New Year pay rise either

alltoomuchrightnow · 12/12/2020 23:46

I would not expect anything after only 6 months in a job

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/12/2020 23:48

£10 < carer / mug >>

KarmaNoMore · 12/12/2020 23:49

My bonus this year is:

  • Frozen salary
  • 3 times as much work since they have cut sooooo many people
  • 2 fingers

The bloody CEO in gratitude for giving us all the items listed above is giving us 3 extra days of holiday!

If I didn’t need the job I would tell him to stuck his gratitude and extra holiday up his arse, I could take 5 weeks off with all the extra time I have done in the last few months that they won’t pay or let me take off.as it doesn’t suit the business for me to take the time back at this time.

LemonadePockets · 12/12/2020 23:54

@FancySomeChips do you work for Nessa & Dave?

Twobrews · 12/12/2020 23:56

DH gets a percentage of his salary up to a max of 40% dependant on company performance.
In his previous job he could choose a turkey, a ham or a hamper.
I got a bottle of gin and a scarf from the place I volunteer at last year, I was delighted.

BlueSkies2020 · 12/12/2020 23:57

£40 M&S voucher or Hotel chocolate hamper

Longdistance · 13/12/2020 00:03

My dh gets £350 all in one voucher and then as they haven’t had a Christmas do, they’ve given a £50 odd voucher. Dh, also received a bonus this year.
I got a bottle of white wine and some chocolates.
