Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

I think it depends on the field you work in.

I've never had one in any job I've done but my DH works in finance and gets £400-£500 in John Lewis vouchers plus a big hamper with champagne.
An annual bonus between 10-15k depending on company performance and a yearly pay rise are the norm in his job

ArabellaScott · 12/12/2020 22:41

I've never had one (bar maybe some free fags when I worked in a pub).

We give staff one when we can. This year has been too disrupted and next year is too uncertain. So, I don't think we're doing it this year.

OuiOuiKitty · 12/12/2020 22:41

I'm self employed so get nothing. Dh gets €400 every year.

Holy fuck!

Often bonus payments are pro rata so if he has not been there the full year he may get half or nothing at all. My Ex-H used to get an extra months salary at Christmas but that stopped years ago.

RoseMartha · 12/12/2020 22:45

Nothing. No pay rise for two years either.

(Originally in my current job I earned more than min wage, not anymore).

DP is getting a generous £1600 bonus next week as his team are ahead of progress on their current project (construction). He's never had one before as always been self employed until recently. Me on the other hand (NHS) gets absolutely nothing. I did used to work in a GP surgery and we once got a £150 bonus each and always got gifts like wine/chocs from managers. Nothing at all like that working for a trust. So it's really impossible to say. I know you will be eager to know but I wouldn't ask, just be grateful whatever it is and it's better than nothing Smile

ImAKaren · 12/12/2020 22:47

I get a bottle of wine. DH got a £25 giftcard this year, for working extra hard though lockdown.

IAmADNAMA · 12/12/2020 22:47

In my old job we don't get a Christmas bonus but a bonus around April. They're completely unfair and have to be kept hush hush as everyone gets different. They do it on your 'performance'. I worked there for many years didn't take one single sick day. Covered weekends, did longer days then I was supposed to and got £100 whilst another worker was always off sick, always late, pretty much never there got £350 (she was liked by management). So glad I left that company.

IEat · 12/12/2020 22:48

We get a free hot chocolate once a year... Whoop de fucking do... No tea or coffee though.. Do a tough exhausting job. Dead on our feet and the thanks is a hot chocolate

Normally £1,000 - likely to be less this year but unconfirmed as of yet.

Rewis · 12/12/2020 22:54

It will vary massively. Some get a £50 and some 6 month salary. Depends on company and their performance.

I've never had a Christmas bonus. In my current job NHS there is no bonus. In my old job we would get £100 voucher as a Christmas gift and once got £500 bonus in the summer after a tough year (CEO died, covering that, made an increase in sales etc.)

Camphillgirl · 12/12/2020 22:54

A weeks pay but only if you had been in job 52 weeks otherwise it was a percentage of 52 weeks x 1 weeks pay

ohwhatamiserableyear · 12/12/2020 22:54
@cariadlet Teacher too, we never had any, the bonuses came from lovely parents and their gifts, they were so appreciated.
Probably won't even have any lovely notes this year from parents ... think our head has banned them due to covid.

ZenNudist · 12/12/2020 22:56

Everywhere is different. I do get bonuses at other times of year but only this year they've been giving Christmas ones too. We got £25 to spend on Christmas food or drink treat for our virtual Christmas party.. It's a voucher scheme we have so I can use it in many shops.

I'm sad for you that you are relying on a bonus to up your festive cheer. I hope it's a good one.

TheWichitaWineOne · 12/12/2020 22:57

I freelance, so there's no bonus culture for me, but I have clients that I've worked with for years, so they usually drop me an extra £50 or something.

In a previous career, bonuses came with the financial year end, and Christmas perks were more about Champagne on the last day/party/whatever.

MrsSleepyHB · 12/12/2020 22:58

This is my first Xmas at a new job (lost my job in my chosen career at the beginning of the pandemic) and they have given us all £250 regardless of rank however it may be worth expecting nothing at all and being pleasantly surprised if you do, as many organisations that usually give bonuses likely won't this year

TangledNemo · 12/12/2020 22:58

I’ve worked in one company that paid bonuses twice a year. They didn’t like me too much, so I only got £50 or £100, but some of the long timers got £5000+. (I worked in payroll so knew what everyone else got).

I also worked for Sainsburys for a few years. They didn’t pay a Christmas bonus, but they did pay up to 3% at the end of the financial year if the store (and wider company) met certain targets. I think we only met the targets once, and cuz I was part time, my bonus was tiny again.

My current employer doesn’t give bonuses, but does give gifts. Last year, I got a bottle of gin and a scarf. Don’t know if he’s planning anything for this year though, he’s not even buying milk for the staff kitchen anymore.

Scarby9 · 12/12/2020 22:58

I have never had a bonus in any job.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 12/12/2020 22:59

My dd works for nhs - one year the 2 consultants she worked for gave her vouchers and presents worth around £250 - she had only worked for them for 6 months. These were paid for personally by them but shows that you can get a Christmas 'bonus in the NHS!

Myshinynewname · 12/12/2020 23:07

I used to get £50 every year in my old job. I've worked for family for the last 8 years and got nothing!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 12/12/2020 23:07

I get nothing.

DH usually gets a £25 gift card, but it's normally from his department head personally rather than company coffers.

FangsForTheMemory · 12/12/2020 23:09

I used to get £20 in my first job. Nothing since then. I worked in local government for 20 years and I can just imagine the headlines if we’d got a bonus.
