Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

I get nothing.

*To just wait and see

@Steroidsandantidepressants No, none of us have previously had a bonus before either, so I generally have no idea.

*Neither of us, apologies for typos

Errrrr NEVER "enquire" about it....
Christmas bonuses are completely discretionary. In over 15 years I've never worked for a company that gave one

rottiemum88 · 12/12/2020 21:17

The company I work for is giving £500 to all members of staff this year as a Christmas bonus. No idea if that's typical of what they give every year as I only joined in July.

Gingernaut · 12/12/2020 21:18

Get to keep the job?

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 12/12/2020 21:18

My first xmas bonus this year for working through lockdown. We all got an extra £100. My mate gets £300 every year though don't know if they will this year as they were furloughed most of it.

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:18

@ivfbeenbusy No, I mean with colleagues (now friends) when they’ve mentioned it. He wouldn’t bring it up with the boss

Surely it’s depends entirely on what company you’re with! Check your contract/T&Cs.

GintyMcGinty · 12/12/2020 21:19

Nothing. Pay freeze too.

livingthegoodlife · 12/12/2020 21:19

Completely depends on company. One place I worked was £100 cash in an envelope another place £25 high st voucher. Current place - nothing.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 12/12/2020 21:19

i get my wages if i work over christmas no time and a half no extra and as im in hospitality i will be lucky if they even open before christmas so furlough 80% for me my OH who was a lecturer at uni didnt get one either bonuses seem to be very office based

Warpdrive · 12/12/2020 21:19

I've never had a bonus at Christmas before but joined a new company this year and we all were sent 100 in vouchers and extra annual leave in 2021. I was overwhelmed to he honest, totally wasn't expecting it.

IDontDrinkTea · 12/12/2020 21:20

My husband gets a percentage of his salary as a bonus. The amount is discretionary. It’s never been more than 10%

DartmoorChef · 12/12/2020 21:20

DP gets a pasty off his bosses. 🙄

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:21

@Gingernaut Yeah that’s at the front of our minds after we both lost our jobs. Still paying off bills from that time so this extra would hopefully at least help a little to be less strict with our Christmas food choices and have a more enjoyable day.

It varies from company to company and even ones that are usually generous may well be cutting back this year because of Covid.
What sort of job does your DH do?
When I worked as a support worker my boss gave us £50 extra in our wages.
Shop work came with no bonus
When I did admin it was a small £10 present and no bonus.
Sales was a £1k bonus.
Current job (compliance related) is no bonus but extra days off and a gift from manager.

I think you'll have to wait and see as you can't politely ask (unless your DH has made friends and can ask in passing if they mention it)

Ginfordinner · 12/12/2020 21:21

Nothing where I work.

FlumpetCrumpet · 12/12/2020 21:23

Everyone used to get £350 where I used to work regardless of rank. Where I currently work, we don't get anything, although there's talk of some sort of voucher to say thanks for sticking by us in a desperately shitty year for the company (anything short of a lorry load of gold bullion won't begin to cover it!)

Feelingpoorlysick · 12/12/2020 21:23

I'd say it varies massively.
My husband gets an extra days pay.

ImAllOut · 12/12/2020 21:23

With all due respect, the OP is specifically asking about people who do receive Christmas bonuses as she knows her husband's company gives them. I don't think there's much point responding to say that you've never got one and never do.

user1471543094 · 12/12/2020 21:24

I get about a week's wage, cash.

Previously worked in a place that gave a week's wage taxed. One year they dropped it to £100 taxed and it was a huge shock to everyone!

Place before that I got £20

firstimemamma · 12/12/2020 21:25

NHS frontline so bugger all.

Sparklesocks · 12/12/2020 21:25

It really depends on the industry, the specific role and how well the company has performed that year (so a lot of bonuses may have been frozen this year with covid losses).

Where I work the warehouse staff get £200 for a Xmas bonus, the head office staff don’t get one but that’s because they get an annual salary bonus earlier in the year. Also the £200 is included in their December pay, so is taxed rather than cash in an envelope.
