To find drag queens offensive?

MrsMummy500 · 12/12/2020 18:39

AIBU to find drag queens really bloody offensive?

I hate the term offensive, it’s bandied around far too often at far too insignificant things (am aware this may be one of them). BUT, men dressing up as some fetishised version of a man made ideal of a woman really pisses me off. Hyper hair, max make up, drink in hand, revealing clothes.

I do not know a single woman like that. It riles me and I feel like I’m unable to express it as women have lost so much of their space to LGBTQ+ community (I perceive this, I don’t say it as a fact).
potential bomb drop alert but if white people are taken down (rightly IMO) for ‘blacking up’ should it be acceptable for men to parody women in the form of drag queens.

Ps- I do not buy for one minute that they are celebrating the female form with balloon breasts. It feels more like a piss take.

Essex girls, posh blokes, religions, millennials, boomers, computer geeks, so many groups are made fun of in the name of comedy. Some of it's nasty, some isn't.

Wheresmykimchi · 13/12/2020 19:48

@Quaagars

To me personally, it's not entertaining. But I don't equate race and gender in the way you do, no

This
I had a long comment but deleted it all and it pretty much is what you said but a lot less succinctly Grin
Race and gender/sex are two different struggles.

Don't get this lot started on gender not existing again.

How they can compare the two then deny the impact of gender is beyond me.

happygolurkey · 13/12/2020 19:48

I just don't watch them.

I agree with you. However, i was answering to the person who was basically saying no-one should be allowed a view on drag unless they are 'part of the LGBT community.' As someone belonging to a group demeaned by drag (women) I feel I am entitled to a view on it. Not everyone will share it, but i am still entitled to a view.

Change the word 'female' to 'black', 'gay' or 'jewish'. Still entertaining is it?

It's not "female" or "black" or "gay" or "Jewish" though, is it?

When people can't stick to the point and really don't know what they're talking about, they will make oddball comparisons without a thought. I've seen a few thread comments where Black Women are mentioned.

Stop using Black Women as a way to what you see as convenient in making a point, and that's all. It's dismissive.

Moaning about men in drag yet your casual throwing in of women who suffer racist AND sexist microaggressions every day, is racist af. What exactly do we have to do with drag queens?

I have a Latino friend, gay, and a drag queen. He'd make mincemeat of half the comments here and I'd rather him as a friend than "yeah but Black Women, gays etc" false face people who want us to be up in arms against drag queens for what, I don't know since the other irrelevant points dragged in have just made this thread a mess.

'Essex girls, posh blokes, religions, millennials, boomers, computer geeks, so many groups are made fun of in the name of comedy'

Comedy is fine. Drag queens aren't funny though. They are misogynistic men mocking women.

We used to have sexist crap in the 70s. Comedy has evolved. You wouldn't expect homophobic jokes in the 'name of comedy' would you?

BrumBoo · 13/12/2020 19:52

When posh blokes and computer geeks fall under the category of oppressed group, you might actually have a point. Essex girls is the only one you have a point about, but again that's due to society's stereotyping of women rather than about them being from Essex.

The character of Sean in coronation Street was called limp wrists for a long period by his boss which was seen as a funny endearing nick name. Mrs brown is homophobic on a weekly basis , as is Frankie Boyle , Jimmy Carr, Biggins was homophobic on live TV a couple years ago but was only thrown out after a Jewish slur...yet still has a pretty fantastic career.

I am Jewish actually which was one of my examples out of the three I gave

Oh no, I'm so scared of the male who makes a living from misogyny coming here and making 'mincemeat' of our opinions. Better stop having a female opinion on men taking the piss... sorry performing their art on women before the men arrive to tell us what-for.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/12/2020 19:57

Exatly and tbh i think jokes about 'Essex girls' stopped years ago. Some people on this thread just don't seem to understand sexism and grotesque stereotyping should be as unacceptable as racism and homophobia nowadays.

Carriemac · 13/12/2020 19:58

As a woman I find it deeply offensive when people dress up as women in order to mock us
completely agree

This with bells on.

Girlyracer · 13/12/2020 20:02

The exaggeration of drag queens does my head in. I won't go anywhere where they are performing. They knock me sick.

MammaSchwifty · 13/12/2020 20:03

men stereotyping and mocking women. Sooooo original and entertaining.

If it was any other protected characteristic as the butt of such a joke, it would be rightly unacceptable. But women, as usual, are fair game.

Women are not a protected characteristic.

Funny how people are cherry picking quotes from the poster and commenting with "ooh so scared!" comments and ignoring the rest of the post?
What about this bit

Why are you capitalising Black Women like that? Anyway nobody cares about your friend or what violence he may choose to use.

Yeah noticed that. Thats a few reasonable questions now from postere that have been ignored. Including the one you highlighted where someone saying about men turning to drag as they can't make it as a man went completely unchallenged.
laudemio · 13/12/2020 20:06

Well the term Essex girl has been removed from the dictionary as it is offensive, so excellent example.
I also cannot see the difference between the black and white minstrel show and drag.
Group of people oppressed on the basis of their physical characteristics have piss taken out of them by oppressors dressing up to mimic them. Nasty and low.

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 20:07

Confused What has that got to do with anything, what are you implying? What about what the poster was actually saying?

PP didn't mention violence.

@DeeCeeCherry , I care about your friend Flowers

queenofknives · 13/12/2020 20:07

Just read through the last several pages and wtf. People are allowed to disagree, you know. Fucking hell.

There doesn't have to be one correct answer and you don't need to harangue people and insult them until they agree with what your version of the correct answer is. No one has to agree at all! Literally nothing is at stake here apart from a fucking AIBU vote. The fact that some of you are willing to stoop to insults and gaslighting for the sake of a vote you've already won blows my fucking mind.

FWIW I agree with the pp who said there are degrees of offensiveness. Hinge and Brackett = not offensive really. Acting out an abortion = pretty offensive and misogynistic. Drag Race is not my kind of thing but a lot of women watch it so presumably they don't feel too insulted by it or they wouldn't bother. But many women, including me, are offended and disturbed by the Drag Queen library readings. So yes, I'm offended by some versions of drag and not by others.

Doesn't fit into the agenda.
