To find drag queens offensive?

MrsMummy500 · 12/12/2020 18:39

AIBU to find drag queens really bloody offensive?

I hate the term offensive, it’s bandied around far too often at far too insignificant things (am aware this may be one of them). BUT, men dressing up as some fetishised version of a man made ideal of a woman really pisses me off. Hyper hair, max make up, drink in hand, revealing clothes.

I do not know a single woman like that. It riles me and I feel like I’m unable to express it as women have lost so much of their space to LGBTQ+ community (I perceive this, I don’t say it as a fact).
potential bomb drop alert but if white people are taken down (rightly IMO) for ‘blacking up’ should it be acceptable for men to parody women in the form of drag queens.

Ps- I do not buy for one minute that they are celebrating the female form with balloon breasts. It feels more like a piss take.

@BrumBoo

We don't really care whether you think we should be here. We won't be bullied off by you.

Nobody is is bullying you off. As I said, you've added nothing to the debate, and now you're acting like the wounded party. Nobody has stopped you from doing so, just dont be surprised that some of us find what you've posted to be unsubstantiated.

Wanting your own little echo chamber?

Not at all, just getting a tad bored of being tagged by a poster who is going on and on about how they don't have to talk about the topic at hand. Or you who's avoid the topic completely to do a bit of stirring.

I assume you're not addressing the other stirring poster purely because they agree with you.

I couldn't care less if you think my views are unsubstantiated.

NoddyWithAVoddy · 13/12/2020 18:47

Shame they made men dressing as women in public legal.
They probably only did so because most of our male MPs like to wear stockings and suspenders.

BrumBoo · 13/12/2020 18:50

It's quite amusing. All a bit 'look at me! Don't look at me!'

I didnt want to say it, but this is exactly what is it is. They've gone from just being opposite voices to making the whole thread about them. Think its best just to ignore them until they decide to have an thread-related opinion that they can actually back up for once.

IsoscelesSandwich · 13/12/2020 18:52

What a joyless sentiment. Drag is art and culture and FUN! Drag queens take nothing away from women, they're not parodying women, they're just being drag queens. If you don't like it, you don't have to engage.

But when @Quaagars dares back me up we are a double act. Righto.
lachy · 13/12/2020 18:55

I loathe drag. I find it deeply offensive.

Sootybear · 13/12/2020 18:55

You couldn't have a drag king show on television as hardly anyone would watch it. Men wouldn't, gay men certainly wouldn't , maybe only lesbians and a few women would, so it wouldn't be viable. It's that whole thing that men decide what's funny, what should be shown on mm, etc. Also I work in a library, and I'm not going to be running a drag queen storytime anytime soon.

BrumBoo · 13/12/2020 18:57

Drag queens take nothing away from women, they're not parodying women

Apart from the bit where they call themselves women, make horribly sexist jokes and undermine what it is to be female, of course. Though perhaps you can explain, @IsoscelesSandwich why its ok to do women as an 'art form', but no other group of people?

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 19:00

How is it possible to defend yourself and put up with all this juvenile bollocks without making the "thread all about you" if you do though?
It's either a case of get yourself bullied off, or stand up for yourself and stick to your opinion.
Can't have it both ways.
Stick to actually listening to other opinions instead of resorting to all this crap if people dare dissent and it might not be so "me me" any more.

RedDogsBeg · 13/12/2020 19:05

Yes, I'd like an answer to that too please.

Haven't rtft but OP YANBU. Drag, woman face, is utterly offensive and misogynistic. The black and white minstrels didn't get a pass for being an 'art form' in spite of being performers so no idea why drag performers do.

likeamillpond · 13/12/2020 19:10

The horrible sexist jokes Drag Persons (no point calling them queens or women) could be because they envy and covert women at the same time
People make fun of people they're jealous of.
Theyre to be pitied really.. Not despised.
There is something tragic comedic about them

Theyre all all laughing, catty funny comments on the outside but full of bitter twisted hatred towards people (mainly women) on the inside.

They can't make it in the world of men so choose to be men dressed as women, while mocking them.

RedDogsBeg · 13/12/2020 19:11

@IsoscelesSandwich, could you expand on this? How are they not parodying women?

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 13/12/2020 19:11

Queen - and that would be a female term then?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/12/2020 19:15

'The horrible sexist jokes Drag Persons (no point calling them queens or women) could be because they envy and covert women at the same time People make fun of people they're jealous of. Theyre to be pitied really.. Not despised.'

True. I do pity them really I just loathe all the adulation they get particularly from telly presenters as if they're 'brave'. It's very fucked up.

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 19:21

They can't make it in the world of men so choose to be men dressed as women

[shocked]

Wow.
That's not offensive how?!
Or is it only OK to be offensive if it's someone we feel it's OK to be offensive about?!

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 19:21

OK, that was meant to be a Shock

People do make fun of people they're jealous of.

Has it not occurred to you that gay / transgender males may end up in the world of drag because it feels more accepting of them than our world (see - they can't make it as males, whatever that means).

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 19:24

How are they not parodying women?

I already gave my views upthread on this, it's been answered already umpteen times by myself and others.
People are entitled to see it as a piss take and a parody, others are entitled to their views too,

persistentwoman · 13/12/2020 19:24

What an interesting thread - and good to see so many women calling out the disrespectful, sexist misogyny of drag. It's long overdue for it to be binned in the same place that the black and white minstrels were dumped.

As a woman I find it deeply offensive when people dress up as women in order to mock us. Sometimes I think we have got nowhere.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/12/2020 19:28

'It's long overdue for it to be binned in the same place that the black and white minstrels were dumped'

Yes, I do think more and more people are waking up to the fact that it isn't 'art', it isn't funny and more importantly it isn't ok.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 13/12/2020 19:28

a) I don't have to accept offensive parodies to soothe some man's feelings of inadequacy - that's punching down.

b) Most trans women would find your description of them as unable to 'make it as males' to be highly offensive. Did you mean to misgender them?

I didn't make the comment about unable to make it as males @MissLucyEyelesbarrow
