To find drag queens offensive?

MrsMummy500 · 12/12/2020 18:39

AIBU to find drag queens really bloody offensive?

I hate the term offensive, it’s bandied around far too often at far too insignificant things (am aware this may be one of them). BUT, men dressing up as some fetishised version of a man made ideal of a woman really pisses me off. Hyper hair, max make up, drink in hand, revealing clothes.

I do not know a single woman like that. It riles me and I feel like I’m unable to express it as women have lost so much of their space to LGBTQ+ community (I perceive this, I don’t say it as a fact).
potential bomb drop alert but if white people are taken down (rightly IMO) for ‘blacking up’ should it be acceptable for men to parody women in the form of drag queens.

Ps- I do not buy for one minute that they are celebrating the female form with balloon breasts. It feels more like a piss take.

@fucknuckle

just so we’re all on the same page here:

Danny La Rue, Edna Everage, Hinge and Bracket, Lily Savage, Mrs Brown et al (what my Nan referred to as ‘female impersonators’) are acceptable because it’s just harmless fun.

Every other drag act ever - embittered gay men appropriating a woman’s right to dress in full evening wear and tell jokes. with a slight hint of incipient paedophilia if they go near a child, ever.

so impersonating females if you’re irish or from the seventies is fine, but any other drag performance artist is a vile, dangerous misogynist? bit of a stretch, really. there’s some cracking discussions going on here, keep up the good work.

Not for me, no. I think all drag is a hideous mockery of women, it was never funny and it is misogynistic to its very core.

Or, to put it another way, most posters acknowledge that not every man who plays a woman's character is being misogynistic. How awful of us to acknowledge some nuance to all this - what a disappointment to the Twitter MN haters.

@BrumBoo , both @Quaagars and I have explained repeatedly why we don't want to engage with you and it's nothing to do with not having answers in a difficult topic. The wide eyed ah it must be because they don't know routine doesn't wash at this point.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/12/2020 18:28

'The only angry people in this thread are the "feminists" who have coined "womanface" as a means to be outraged at men.'

I'm not angry so much as I find drag queens ridiculous and insulting. We've been told to shut up by a pp but sadly no, we won't sit down and be quiet. To correct you though I'm not 'outraged by men', I object to predominantly gay men doing grotesque parodies of women. Some people are doormats, I'm not one of them and won't nod along because they do their make up nicely.

Pepvixen · 13/12/2020 18:28

@BananaHammock23

I really think unless you're part of the LGBTQ+ community, it's not up to you to police what's offensive within that community.

Also losing space to LGBTQ+ people... what space??? I would love to know

Perhaps you'd have a point if it was confined to gay clubs, but it's not, it's in our libraries, on Strictly Come Dancing. I've had to explain it to my small DD.

We're well within our rights to point out that a sexualised parody of ourselves is offensive.

PrincessNutNutRoast · 13/12/2020 18:29

David Suchet played Lady Bracknell a few years ago and he was BRILLIANT.

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 18:29

Shit plop Grin
That's an ace phrase
Why the heck can somebody not just drop an opinion you don't like though?!
I see a few posters on here who have just said "Ooh, never thought of it like that, you're right, OP!"
Then buggered off again.
Do they get a telling off for a shit plop or is it OK to if you agree with them?

Wheresmykimchi · 13/12/2020 18:30

Yes , gaslights. Well done for reading that word.

The shit plop where posters swung by to make unrelated points just to snipe at me were allowed without question.

Although I did also laugh at shit plop 🤣

Wheresmykimchi · 13/12/2020 18:32

@PepVixen

How does that conversation go?

Mummy /daddy what's that ?
A man dressed up in woman's clothes dancing on the TV .

Would the same conversation be asked of Karen Clifton wearing man's suits week in week out?

Wheresmykimchi · 13/12/2020 18:34

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'see you got a final wee 'feel you can' in there. I know you think it's dead clever and all, but it really does nothing other than re inforce my belief of your sheer arrogance even when repeatedly given the facts'

'Arrogance' again? Not me this time phew!

Kimshi either have a robust debate or don't but this attacking people then feeling sorry for yourself when you get a response is, to use your favourite word, bizarre.

It's Kimchi, by the way. If you're going to continually pop by to add your opinions and join in on a pile on you could at least use the right name.
BrumBoo · 13/12/2020 18:34

@Wheresmykimchi for someone who doesn't want to engage you don't half go on about it by tagging me constantly Hmm. Do you have weird determination to have the last word, even when the conversation isn't even directed at you?

It's a topic discussing stereotypes and the harm they bring. If you dont want to discuss the topics that come with that (such as gender and the definitionof being a woman), I honestly don't know what you're doing here. At this point, I dont care. You've oth brought nothing of value to the thread as people with opposing views, just jumped in to say you don't agree with zero explanation as to why. You've spent more time arguing about why you don't have to explain yourself or your views more than anything, it's boring and not relevant to debate.

As a side note, I wish MN had an option to put posters on silent......

You were talking about me , so I have a right to respond. Ah , but you on the other hand have brought so much , being so much better than us Hmm

We don't really care whether you think we should be here. We won't be bullied off by you.

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 18:37

Er........ isn't that how internet conversations go?
People respond to each others comments?

As a side note, I wish MN had an option to put posters on silent......

Wanting your own little echo chamber?
Figures.
Always the way

No , you're only allowed to respond in the wah that they want. Of course.

I'd quite like that function too Grin

GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/12/2020 18:38

'join in on a pile on'

Oh kimshi there hasn't been a pile on at all. It's a robust debate! it maybe feels like a pile on when you're wrong and in the minority though Flowers.

RedDogsBeg · 13/12/2020 18:39

We're well within our rights to point out that a sexualised parody of ourselves is offensive.

We should be, and we should also have our objections listened to and taken seriously, but they won't be, we are only women. No other group would be expected to just put up and shut up.

MsTSwift · 13/12/2020 18:39

Just seems to me (admittedly a few wines in) that stuff just gets pushed too far by men.

Hinge and Bracket Edna Everage - gentle comedy - fine

Full on aggressive sexualised drag boobs hair mimicry grim names - not fine

A few naked ladies for men to look at - fine

Violent nasty anal teen type porn being mainstream so boys expect this of young girls - really not fine

Transgender quietly using women’s facilities - kind of fine

Self Id so any man can access all women’s facilities and sports on his own say so - really not fine!

No it feels like a pile on when posters pop by only to cherry pick my quotes in order to incite others to start up about points I explained five pages ago.

Your idea of robust severe and mine are very different. Bless you , still not having worked out that there is no right and wrong.

I can live with being the minority. I'd rather be on my own that in with your clan riding rough shod. Any day.

It's quite amusing. All a bit 'look at me! Don't look at me!'

Strictly's on soon Grin.

I've honestly never known grown adults use the word wrong so much in my life .

Nobody is is bullying you off. As I said, you've added nothing to the debate, and now you're acting like the wounded party. Nobody has stopped you from doing so, just dont be surprised that some of us find what you've posted to be unsubstantiated.

Wanting your own little echo chamber?

Not at all, just getting a tad bored of being tagged by a poster who is going on and on about how they don't have to talk about the topic at hand. Or you who's avoid the topic completely to do a bit of stirring.
