To find drag queens offensive?

MrsMummy500 · 12/12/2020 18:39

AIBU to find drag queens really bloody offensive?

I hate the term offensive, it’s bandied around far too often at far too insignificant things (am aware this may be one of them). BUT, men dressing up as some fetishised version of a man made ideal of a woman really pisses me off. Hyper hair, max make up, drink in hand, revealing clothes.

I do not know a single woman like that. It riles me and I feel like I’m unable to express it as women have lost so much of their space to LGBTQ+ community (I perceive this, I don’t say it as a fact).
potential bomb drop alert but if white people are taken down (rightly IMO) for ‘blacking up’ should it be acceptable for men to parody women in the form of drag queens.

Ps- I do not buy for one minute that they are celebrating the female form with balloon breasts. It feels more like a piss take.

As an aside, @Passmeabottlemrjones, I have been humming that song to myself as I read this thread and only just twigged why Smile

RedDogsBeg · 13/12/2020 14:55

Bit of an extreme example don’t you think? Most drag is just lip syncing to pop music.

and The Black and White Minstrel Show was just singing and dancing.

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'You are without a doubt the most patronising poster I have ever come across, that last sentence would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic . No I dont agree with all your views but if I don't I'm a migogynist and an apologist '

We'll have to agree to disagree there then. For someone so very sensitive you like to throw around the insults don't you, hmm?

OK you're not a misogynist but you think misogynists are funny and you don't object to them. Got it 🙄.

Can you link me to where I said misogynists or even drag queens ate funny? If you read really carefully you will even see that I have said I don't enjoy drag .
Wheresmykimchi · 13/12/2020 14:58

@jellyfrizz

Which has nothing to do with the comparison of BAME and drag queens hmm

?No one was comparing BAME & drag queens. The question asked was why are the BAME community taken seriously in complaints about blackface when women aren’t about drag queens? When both blackface and drag is all about stereotypes to the detriment of the group.

Which is exactly why I made the example of the root of the BAME cause. The two are not comparable.

It's one of my favourite songs! Smile

@GetOffYourHighHorse i don't think calling you patronising is particularly insulting. I think you're well aware you are.

Passmeabottlemrjones · 13/12/2020 15:07

I don't know? It all comes under 'drag'? Is there 'acceptable' and 'unacceptable' drag? Careful, you don't want to come across as a 'bigot' now do you!

As an aside, the angle that Pink News decided to go with when reporting on Blair Back's 'live abortion' performance was how great it was that 'Christians are raging' about it.

But you know, there is no misogyny to see here at all.

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 15:08

'You believe it is inappropriate , I don't. neither are wrong nor right but I'm astounded by your arrogance of you telling me what is wrong and right.'

Well no, you are wrong. That isn't arrogance it is fact.

It is sheer arrogance to tell people that they are wrong and you are right.
You do realise people are allowed their own opinions right?!
I do not think it is offensive.
As I do not see it as taking the piss out of women.
Just people expressing themselves, doing them.
It's not all about me in my opinion.
I can see why people do think it is offensive though, if they are taking it personally, think it's mocking them, telling them how to be a woman (see make up points upthread) but can't you see that other people do not feel the same as you?
It doesn't make anyone "wrong."
It also doesn't mean that people who aren't offended and see it as a bit of fun are pretending women's oppression doesn't exist or anything.

Thank you.

I don't actually like it either which is the funny part. I just don't agree that it is equatable to black face and I don't agree with the posts saying if we don't hate it we are misogynists. Confused

'Can you link me to where I said misogynists or even drag queens ate funny'

'You believe it is inappropriate , I don't'

Oh I do apologise, you don't think It is 'inappropriate'. Misogynists mocking women are inappropriate.

Kimshi do you know any drag queens/ misogynists perchance? you seen very defensive of them.

Again with the arrogance.

No.

And I don't watch drag because I don't enjoy it.

Because back in the real world , you can not enjoy something but not run around telling everyone else that they are wrong because I said.

lemonsquashie · 13/12/2020 15:14

Have always found it out for you incredibly cringe worthy

You know what else I hate? Gay men referring to each other as 'she'

GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/12/2020 15:14

'don't think calling you patronising is particularly insulting. I think you're well aware you are.'

No no it's the repeated 'bizarre' accusations and 'pathetic' slurs you're flinging about then wibbling on about other posters tone. I couldn't give a rat's ass but don't dish it out if you can't take it.

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 15:15

I never used the words ridiculous ,humourless or bitter either. And I didn't dismiss anyone's views - PP dismissed mine

Exactly - words get put in your mouth if you disagree.
Only people using the words ridiculous, humourless and bitter are the posters who find it offensive referring to themselves - nobody's even said anything like that?! Confused
I for one have even said that we're entitled to like what we like. (Or don't like)

You find jokes about women having smelly genitalia funny?
No

You find drag names like 'Anna Bortion' and 'Malestia Child' funny?
Not in the slightest, horrible in fact

Although why wham straight to the extreme?
I enjoyed watching Drag Race UK for example. Absolutely nothing like your examples whatsoever.
Also I see people have objected to the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella - (can't find the comment now but it's on thread) - how is that in any way extreme?!
It's a bloody pantomime for goodness sake.
As in, there's a world away from your extreme examples.

The poster who asked me if I was 10? That was bizarre. That's not an insult , it was a bizarre question. Not a slur. Different level to you calling me a misogynist and an apologist really isn't it.
jellyfrizz · 13/12/2020 15:16

The root of complaints about blackface and drag are the same - stereotypes of an oppressed group.

Indeed. We are the ones saying people can like what they like and we are all different but we are the ones being accused of using words we haven't used.

RedDogsBeg · 13/12/2020 15:17

As I do not see it as taking the piss out of women

Really? How is an extreme, hyper sexualised portrayal of women, along with all the sexist, misogynistic 'jokes' at the expense of women NOT taking the piss out of and deliberately mocking women?

Just people expressing themselves, doing them.

What do you mean by this? Expressing themselves as what? Doing them, doing what? All I see is men using gross caricatures of women in order to vilify and demean women.

Wheresmykimchi · 13/12/2020 15:18

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'The root of complaints about blackface and drag are the same - stereotypes of an oppressed group.'

Exactly.

A PP pointed out the origins of drag, when transexuality and homosexuality was illegal. Not all drag queens are gay but the ones that are also represent an oppressed group.
Quaagars · 13/12/2020 15:18

Someone gets told off for saying wow but it's OK to reply with just a rolly eyes lol?
Great response.
How does it go - are you 10?
Did I do it right?

Quaagars · 13/12/2020 15:19

What do you mean by this? Expressing themselves as what?

Themselves!
As in wanting to dress to please themselves, not how others think they should be behaving.
