To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

True, Iris, that was also said about the EU Xmas Confused

pollylocketpickedapocket · 12/12/2020 09:10

I’m in the north. I’ve got tickets to a pantomime in Merseyside, booked to see Father Christmas at a farm next week. Also another 2 Christmas experiences planned. There’s plenty to do even in tier 3

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/12/2020 09:11

its a little bit rich seeing as no one else has this opportunity.

Again. There are pantos. So "some others" rather than "no one else"

@Tellmetruth4

FGS give the London bashing a rest won’t you. I swear some of you won’t be happy until London burns down again and even then you’d be angry because they would be talking about ‘That London’ on the news.

If London was tier 3 and your area were tier 2 you’d be complaining that the government cares more about the lives of Londoners so has shut everything to save them whilst letting Covid run rampant in your town. It’s never ending and it’s boring.

Don’t worry London is going into tier 3 soon and you can relax and go back to being the ‘country’s friendliest people TM’.

Well said. The chips on shoulders are truly tedious.

We have a panto round here. We’re not going as I think it’ll be weird in the set up. Dh is trying to be Christmassy for the kids but I’m struggling to feel it.

diamondpony80 · 12/12/2020 09:17

I don't begrudge anyone taking their kids out where they can do it. If we had panto here I'd go, but as it is there's nothing much available to anyone. The royals can't please everyone all of the time. I'm sure people in the theatre world appreciated that they are trying to support them. In times like these it's hard to know what's the right thing to do. Their royal train tour, while I'm sure was appreciated by many, was criticized by many others.

Wauden · 12/12/2020 09:18

@Gigheimer

To be honest I’ve only been to the Panto once in the last 5 years... but that’s NOT THE POINT now I can’t...
Next year, go to live theatre, ballet and music as much as can and help the artists and all the workers there keep their livelihoods. Please.
Eleganz · 12/12/2020 09:22

Surprised to hear people saying their are pantos in tier 3 areas. I presume these are open air productions?

Playdoughcaterpillar · 12/12/2020 09:24

Anyone can buy tickets to that panto in London, I have. Sure there are others in tier 2 areas as well. Sorry you are in tier 3 OP but that’s hardly the royals fault.

Iris5543 · 12/12/2020 09:25

Referendums should be tagged onto voting. One extra sheet to Vote.
This is a democracy, we should get a say.

Who would vote to subsidise ONE family, to the tune of millions, when the NHS is crumbling and poverty is rife?

WE COULD HAVE BUILT AN ENTIRE HOSPITAL WITH THE AMOUNT WE SPENT ON TWO WEDDINGS!

This kind of dismissive attitude to people in the regions raising legitimate concerns about the apparent unequal treatment of the South East is what is is tedious.

Can you explain why Covid has been allowed to remain endemic in tier 3 secondary schools in the North continuing to severely disrupt children's education with no mass testing but as soon as cases rise in Tier 2 London mass testing is rapidly rolled out? I'm really struggling to explain that decision on any reasonable basis.

Backbee · 12/12/2020 09:27

We'd be charged if we went home from London to Scotland but it's ok for William and Kate.

You can travel for work, DH has had to travel between Scotland, Wales and different parts of England throughout.

It is about sensitivity and compassion. Many children are going to be deprived of opportunities this year. To see the tax-funded royals swan around taking their kids to a panto when theatres across huge swathes of the country are shut is not sensitive or compassionate. I do blame the government, they should be advising the royals about this.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 09:31

You often take your kids with you for work?

WeatherwaxOn · 12/12/2020 09:31

Haven't read the whole thread but as it's about the pantomime has anybody said, "OH YES YOU ARE"? Grin

MillieVanilla · 12/12/2020 09:33

I think the entire way that Kate and William have behaved the last couple of days has been abhorrent
Nicola Sturgeon got grief over her comments of them ignoring the travel ban but she was 100% right. They are meant to set the tone for the country, people are meant to look to them for guidance along with government.
With that in mind it's no wonder we are in the mess we are in.
They flouted the rules. They spent last week at Windsor with the Queen, right on the edge of a tier 3 area. They were also there with other senior royals. When so many of the country are facing a Christmas with no relatives able to visit and no end in sight before Easter, then the panto, it's just put a very bad taste in my mouth.
Same as Andrews daughter's wedding, thousands of couples have had to cancel this year but there they were, and we were meant to wave flags and be chuffed for them. Nope.
If the travel ban is there it should be upheld and they should be fined. As should the lot with them at Windsor, as there was 8 of them.

Backbee · 12/12/2020 09:33

If for some reason my work involved a trip to the panto then yes of course I would take them!

I often used to have work commitments that would involve entertaining clients at the theatre etc but not at the moment.
Zilla1 · 12/12/2020 09:36

We're all in it together, some by experiencing fun directly and some vicariously by observing others having fun or at least being reassured fun exists. What do you expect the Royals to do, hide away in a single home. People in Sandringham, Windsor, Scotland and pants-land would really miss them.

DinosaurGrrrrr · 12/12/2020 09:38

I don't understand the obsession with these people, last week they are travelling all over the shop in the middle of a pandemic (why?), now they are invited to a pantomime put on to thank key workers (they aren't key workers 😆) 🤔. Has anyone worked out what exactly these people do, bar a lot of thanking other people for their efforts?! They leave their palace, go shake some hands (they don't even do that at the mo!), return to palace. Record messages telling people how tough they've had it... from their palace. Why does no one else find it odd?? People then point out how hard working they are 😂. They get dressed up and shake hands with people for a "living" 😂😂😂.

I just find it really bizarre that we still have a royal family and people still fall over themselves to bow down to them. I'm sick of hearing about them. It's all so out of touch them parading themselves around at the moment, like they are doing something useful?!

Time2change2 · 12/12/2020 09:38

@ineedaholidaynow

Many people possibly don’t realise theatres are open at the moment.
No they really arnt if you are in a tier 3 area!!! It’s 1hr 30 mins drive each way to my nearest open theatre!!
plumpootle · 12/12/2020 09:39

OP yanbu. The total inequality of life for kids in the UK and Royal children upsets me too.

Not to that performance you couldn't.

The whole show is backed by the National Lottery (because there was no certainty that an ordinary company could cover its costs if theatres were closed again). And this was a special for keyworkers

Should the National Lottery refrain from funding projects such as this, because not everyone can access them?

The only London factor I can see here is population level - if you are going to support a project such as this, do you put it in London, where there are 8m residents within easy travel distance and a lot of public transport? Or somewhere else ?

Did anywhere else even bid for funding?

Even though oantomseason has been missed, there's no reason not to put together bids for Lottery funding for other arts projects for 2021
