EU blackmailing the UK

999 replies

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

Congratulations. You voted for this.

@SabrinaThwaite

TBF anyone who gets their “news” from the Telegraph isn’t exactly getting a fair and balanced view on anything, so the batshittery on display isn’t unexpected.
Which papers do you read, out of interest? I read the Times and it seems very balanced.
UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 11/12/2020 07:29

An 8% reduction in exports split between 27 countries would certainly seem to be less damaging than one country taking a 40% drop in exports...

The whole argument that 27 countries will suffer without the market provided by one country more than that one country will suffer is unconvincing... People arguing that seem to have overlooked something. - perhaps the difference between the markets they're comparing (446 million people to sell to versus 66 million...)

@Ltdannygreen

I think it’s funny because halting travel affects them just as much, they are using tactic to try get us to adhere to whatever they want which is why most people chose to leave in the first place. Very clever on thier part. I think it will backfire and we need to just hold on and let them fuck themselves over.
One look at a map should be enough to show that halting cross channel traffic (air, sea or train) really really doesn't doesn't effect the EU as a whole anything like as much as it would effect the UK...

Each nation within the EU they'll might take a hit but they will be able to carry on travelling/trading between themselves, we OTOH?

Congratulations. You voted for this.
I didn't. I have no desire for no deal. It's going to hit my business very hard.
BefuddledPerson · 11/12/2020 07:32

@HmmSureJan

This makes no sense to me. If a person is foolish enough to vote for something that harms their own and their country's best interests just because they are annoyed at being called foolish, they need to think about whether they are a fully mature person.

Indeed but if we are being honest the abuse goes much further than being called "foolish".

Either they are adults or they are not.
Unescorted · 11/12/2020 07:33

@MrsMiaWallis

This was discussed by those who understand the EU in 2016, during the pre-vote period

It was briefly discussed but not presented as fact.

It was presented as fact - but those pointing it out were called "traitors" or "Remoaners" for discussing "Project Fear".
ClaireP20 · 11/12/2020 07:33

OP, you simply cannot engage in a sensible way with remainers. They are like the trans lobby community- any deviating opinion must be quashed...we must attack..honestly it's not worth asking questions like this because they simply don't live in the real world. Most of them have a comfortable middle class existence, never being directly affected by the terrible decisions which have halted our dealings with the ever powerful emerging markets, or seen first hand the negative effects of large scale immigration from Romania into their already desperately poor communities. They don't know that someone whose wife and chidren do not live in this country, and never have, can have child benefit sent abroad, with hardly any proof of their existence, or that when EU officials visit in the guise of 'information sharing', which amounts to little more than a quick meeting with the local council, it costs thousands in first class hotels, business flights, top restaurants and an entourage of 20.

I'm glad we're out of it, and I'm not even English born! X

Most people had access to the same information and either chose to research what they were being asked to vote for or they just listened to soundbites and bus slogans. Those who voted leave cannot in good conscience throw a tantrum over the EU not giving them a cushy leaving present.
I didn't even vote and I still did the research. Knowledge is power.

It was widely discussed and dismissed out of hand by the Leave side. Because they lied and made up fair stories.

Sorry but all trade deals require legal frameworks for arbitration etc. International trade requires international law. Remainers have been trying to explain this for years now.

Still you won OP, we'll all have to eat the beans. Welcome to sovereign U.K., where our overlords profit from lax tax regulation and the rest of us suffer.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 07:35

Yes lots of lies from Leave, but the EU has never said this new request would be on the table.

jasjas1973 · 11/12/2020 07:35

@MrsMiaWallis

The EU demand that we cannot deviate from their laws in perpetuity is ridiculous. And new.
Its laws to do with the "level playing field" i.e. the UK not dropping standards to seek an unfair advantage.

So the EU introduces new product standards, the UK would have to implement these too.... of course in practice they'd have too anyway or EU consumers wouldn't buy the product.

The Eu has suggested allowing lorries, flights and fishing to continue as is for another 6 months.... we have nothing extra in place at our ports, so it would be in our interests to accept.

ClaireP20 · 11/12/2020 07:35

@clearedfortakeoff

Congratulations. You voted for this.
Arh thank you, that's nice.
Cygne · 11/12/2020 07:36

Why on earth do you think the EU owes us anything? If you voted for Brexit thinking that we could just carry on as we were, more fool you.

BlairCorneliaWaldorf · 11/12/2020 07:36

I reluctantly voted remain. In my view the EU has always been corrupt but I still thought we were better off in than out. But I agree with you OP. The behaviour of the EU is basically proving the point of exactly why so many people voted leave.

If they continue to play hardball I do worry about countries such as Spain and Greece and the impact of loss of tourism for them.

Thingstodotoday · 11/12/2020 07:36

Brexit turns out to be complete shitshow shocker! What on earth did the fools who voted for it expect? OP I don’t think you need bother donning a hardhat- there’s clearly not much going on up there to protect.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 07:37

So the EU introduces new product standards, the UK would have to implement these too.... of course in practice they'd have too anyway or EU consumers wouldn't buy the product

That happens all over the world at the moment (individual product standards) and is fine. That isn't the issue!

Osteomancer · 11/12/2020 07:37

@houseinthesnow

I say bring it on!

No deal here we come!

Yeah, bring on the higher prices and all the shit we're going to get, ffs.
Ifailed · 11/12/2020 07:37

Of course the EU are partially to blame for no deal.

I'm afraid not. The status quo was the UK being a member of the EU. The UK decided it wanted to leave, it was up to the UK to come to an arrangement to do so. The EU continued as it had before to work in the best interest of it's members, something the UK had been happy to go along with.
Why would anyone expect the EU to compromise it's member's interests to please the UK? If it was another country leaving and the UK was still a member you can just imagine the howls of protest if the UK thought it would be anyway affected.

The UK chose to upset the apple-cart, the UK is responsible for the ensuing mess.

BlairCorneliaWaldorf · 11/12/2020 07:38

@Cygne

Why on earth do you think the EU owes us anything? If you voted for Brexit thinking that we could just carry on as we were, more fool you.
This makes no sense. The whole point is the EU wants us to carry on as we are, continue to be under their rules. And in voting Leave “we” don’t want that to happen.
ClaireP20 · 11/12/2020 07:38

So people who voted leave are a bunch of thickos who listen to soundbites and bus slogans?

And therein lies the real reason remainers were so upset about the vote.... how can us thicko plebs possibly know 'the truth'.

I mean condescending...
