EU blackmailing the UK

999 replies

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

Completely idiotic.

The blame for this mess is with Brexiteers and the U.K. government and no one else

MadameBlobby · 11/12/2020 07:06

@houseinthesnow

I say bring it on!

No deal here we come!

Bit early to be at the Sherry OP
AnnieKennyfanclub · 11/12/2020 07:07

@Susanwouldntlikeit

we have tried to debate on here for the last 4 years. But debate requires facts and points of view not just having sound bites foung back at us.

Now I am just too angry with the situation to engage.

Its a shit show of the tories own making and they are dragging me and my family down with them.

Its a catastrophy which I have tried to fight for 4 years... and you are telling me that now is the time to debate. FUCK THAT!

Unescorted · 11/12/2020 07:07

The drawbacks of voting for Brexit was pointed out prior to the referendum. At the time it was derided as "Project Fear". The EU position has not changed - if you want to trade with the EU then you abide by EU rules. It is not blackmail, it is maintaining a negotiating position.

If you feel it is Blackmail it is because you were lied to - not by the EU, but by your own politicians and lobby groups.

So for all those people who voted to leave - you won get over it.

Ifailed · 11/12/2020 07:07

Fortunately for the UK the rest of the world will trade normally, so I guess the big losers will be the EU producers

You are right, under WTO rules. So expect 20% tariffs, both ways. So our imports will go up, as will our exports. As we import more than we export, the UK looses out.

BefuddledPerson · 11/12/2020 07:08

How? How do you foresee the EU producers 'losing' most? These are just words, but any economist will tell you they are wrong.

The government knows how badly we will be hit.

The big losers will be UK farmers, producers, exporters - in other words our friends and neighbours.

You're unhinged.

I find it quite terrifying that people are cheering on a no deal. 😟
SabrinaThwaite · 11/12/2020 07:13

TBF anyone who gets their “news” from the Telegraph isn’t exactly getting a fair and balanced view on anything, so the batshittery on display isn’t unexpected.

BefuddledPerson · 11/12/2020 07:14

@houseinthesnow

As the UK have a trade surplus with the EU I don't think it will be the UK that lose, but hundreds of thousands of jobs across the EU as well.
One important truth:

EU accounts for 40% of UK trade.

UK accounts for 8% of EU trade.

Last time I checked 40% was a bigger number than 8%. Five times bigger.

Plus that 8% is shared across the entire EU, across 27 nations.

Our 40% is all ours.

If you think the EU will suffer anywhere near as much as we will, you don't understand basic Maths.

Ylvamoon · 11/12/2020 07:15

The EU is the closest neighbour to the UK.
And if you have a look at a world map, the UK is pretty far away from "the rest of the world"
The EU can very much do without the UK... not so sure about the other way round.

If you can read say French, Spanish or German, have a look at their media. It's an eye opener.
The media here is censored at worst bias at best.

@Susanwouldntlikeit

OP you are getting a lot of abuse on here but no substance or willingness to debate. You will simply have a thread full of potty-mouthed accusations of trolling. Interestingly tho half of people who voted agree with you but will not post here because of the bullying of those who are unable to have a conversation and only up to an incoherent rant.
This. And I was and still am a staunch remainer but I would be disgusted with myself if I attacked, berated and sneered the way so many MNetters do on these threads. These attitudes are a major part of why the majority voted us out of the EU and why Trump was voted in in America. A kick back against these vicious responses to anyone engaging in Wrong Think about how things should be.
MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 07:17

The EU demand that we cannot deviate from their laws in perpetuity is ridiculous. And new.

ClaireP20 · 11/12/2020 07:18

@ZaraW

Just keep looking at your blue passport and be proud to be British..... I'm sure your comments will go over better at the DM.
Quick, someone disagrees with you...attack..attack..attack. Stupid comment.
MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 07:20

The EU will suffer, and probably crumble, if we make a go of Brexit. Of course they will do anything to make it difficult for us.

Whether we will make a go of it is if course moot!

AnneTwacky · 11/12/2020 07:20

I remember a video of a Liverpool University lecturer who specialised in international relationships and trades on here in 2016, that predicted exactly this.

The response to it..."Project Fear" and "We've had enough of experts".
But the thing about experts...they know what they're talking about.

BefuddledPerson · 11/12/2020 07:21

This makes no sense to me. If a person is foolish enough to vote for something that harms their own and their country's best interests just because they are annoyed at being called foolish, they need to think about whether they are a fully mature person.

Those who voted for Brexit made their choice freely. They listened to the same information as the rest of us. Either they voted in what they genuinely believe is the country's best interests or they are petulant fools.

SunniCameHomeWithAVengeance · 11/12/2020 07:22

Brexiteers got exactly what they voted for.
The EU does not have to do anything. The fishing waters is a red herring (Geddit??) as this was a deal done long before they joined the EU. Johnson and his ilk have conveniently forgotten about the GFA and hoped everyone else would too. Most Brexiteers I have been in conversations with actually have little idea what the GFA is.

BefuddledPerson · 11/12/2020 07:23

@MrsMiaWallis

This was discussed by those who understand the EU in 2016, during the pre-vote period.

You do know that your beloved Jeremy Corbyn also wanted out of the EU don't you?

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 07:25

It was briefly discussed but not presented as fact.

TheSultanofPingu · 11/12/2020 07:26

This is what will happen now. Individuals tying themselves in knots trying to blame the EU for this complete shitshow.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 07:26

You are completely wrong to think this. Labour (or JC at least) wanted out and did fuck all to present a positive Remain campaign.

HmmSureJan · 11/12/2020 07:27

Indeed but if we are being honest the abuse goes much further than being called "foolish".

Of course the EU are partially to blame for no deal.

I'm not sure what media you are reading!
