EU blackmailing the UK

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

@jasjas1973

It's perfectly possible to have excellent standards without having to take on EU standards that favour Germany (hence Germany winning many contracts over UK firms)

Yes it is but if you want to sell into the EU market, then you have to abide by their standards.
Same as any US company has to.

German and UK companies have to abide by the same standards, if German industry is more competitive, thats a problem with UK companies not German ones.

Maybe we are not just good enough and/or lack experience?

No, we don't have the capacity for the huge volumes that Germany does.
Jonnywishbone · 11/12/2020 08:00

I frequently find comments from both side of this debate incredibly partisan (and total balls) but then I was a neutral and politically restricted civil servant for many years.

You won't be surprised to learn that British civil servants behaved professionally followed instructions from their political masters and attempted to have sensible well thought out negotiations from Day 1. Very often these officials were pro European (not that their personal views count for a lot).
Frequently they were heckled, yelled at and ignored by European counterparts in meetings. I suspect the only reason the behaviour of EU officials isnt in the public domain or better known is because of an attempt to keep negotiations going.

The reason we have got to this place is because the EU for a very long time didnt care and were not serious. I am talking about quite senior 2nd tier officials here (for anyone else from the civil service I mean DG level).

Also Germany has consistently educated its population better for technical jobs and has invested in manufacturing.

The UK has run down this side in favour of services.

Cam77 · 11/12/2020 08:01

But we HAVE taken BACK control! We can call a disastrous economy wrecking no deal Brexit an "Australian type deal"... and some people will then believe we are winning!

WiseOwlWan · 11/12/2020 08:01

Unreasonable?
Other countries protecting their interests is "unreasonable"

The mess and expense your thickos and racists (voting out)have left for Ireland beggars belief. And as for northern ireland, none of the EU's concerns were umreasonable.

FortunesFave · 11/12/2020 08:01

I wish I could understand a little bit of what's ACTUALLY going on back home. I'm away. I don't understand...too many shouty people.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 08:01

Especially seeing what a shit show the UK has made of it. You're a cautionary tale for the rest of us

Yes, I agree. But if in 5 years things have settled and worked out for the UK then there will be huge pressure in Spain and France to leave. That's not to say things will have worked out!

PortraitOfAWoman · 11/12/2020 08:02

You are right. And as always it's France. Nothing new there.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 08:03

@BefuddledPerson

Yes, this is true. Germany also works well with its unions. But none of that is comfort to the manufacturers in the UK, who would like a fair crack of the whip.
Rhine · 11/12/2020 08:03

There’s been a lot of EU bashing threads on here lately. Do you all work for Dominic Cummings?

gnomeisland · 11/12/2020 08:04

Fun fact, in 2018 we imported £ 12,167,530 worth of pulses from Guatemala.

Cam77 · 11/12/2020 08:04

Bojo the Brexit clown - there will be "opportunities" for Britain

True, the disaster capitalists will have a field day. Millionaires with zero scruples apply now!

AnnieKennyfanclub · 11/12/2020 08:05

@ClaireP20

Knee jerk, sterotypical clap trap.

I am against the tories so I must be a corbynite.

I have shared platforms with members of the conservative party who were devastated by what their party was doing. However, they did not, in the end stand up for what they believed and yes I lost respect.

I cannot forgive the tory infighting which caused this clusterfuck. I cannot forgive the self interest of those disaster capatalists who are betting against the UK and at the same time bank rolling Johnson and his colleagues. This is what causes me to be so vehemeantly anti tory....

To be honest I am completely disenfrancised by the political bodies in the UK...

but yes lets just trade cheap shots!

MrsMiaWallis · 11/12/2020 08:06

The only comfort is that when Mumsnet gets this angry it's usually wrong Grin

BerylReader · 11/12/2020 08:07

You could move in with Jacob Rees Mogg. He’s doing quite well out of Brexit. Oh, wait, is that why he was for it ......😯

Helmetbymidnight · 11/12/2020 08:07

i thought we had an oven ready deal?

i thought it was the easiest deal in the world?

i thought we were at the front of all the queues?

i thought we'd have millions for the nhs?

i thought we'd be over-run with turkish people

Shock was none of this true?!!!!

FortunesFave · 11/12/2020 08:08

I have just read that the UK could end up with an "Australian style deal"

Australia has no formal arrangement yet but still deals. It just means we pay more for the goods we get from Europe...you know what that means?

It means we value Australian made products and produce.

Which means that industry here is supported and funded.

wewillmeetagain · 11/12/2020 08:08

I also think it's worth mentioning that the attitudes of many remainers on this post calling people thick, ignorant, racist etc are another reason people will not ever change their minds on the way they voted. British people don't do well being treated like children and spoken to like they are inferiors, this started with Brussels and is now being continued by remainers. The awful sneering attitude doesn't help the argument to remain.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2020 08:09

Seems like the Brexiteers are coming out of their bunkers and doubling down. Be under no illusion that this is on you.

Mistymonday · 11/12/2020 08:09

You’re very ignorant. YABU.

Buddytheelf85 · 11/12/2020 08:09

Fun fact, in 2018 we imported £ 12,167,530 worth of pulses from Guatemala.

Well, given that a) £12 million of pulses won’t be enough to feed our 65m population for one day, let alone a one year and b) those pulses most likely arrived through the EU, I don’t find that hugely comforting but thank you for trying.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2020 08:11

@MrsMiaWallis , I've never wanted to be more wrong in my life. Egg on my face is a victory for this country. Egg on your face, on the other hand, is a fucking nightmare for all of us.

Cam77 · 11/12/2020 08:11

Two weeks away from Victory in Europe or Independence Day or whatever - I thought there would be a hum of excitement through Britain at this point. Our food bill will rise by 20% but those bananas should have a nice curve and if they don't we will have full power to do something about it! We will be ruled democratically from Westminster alone by which ever party has the support of the entire country! (IE typically 35%-38% of voters)

Helmetbymidnight · 11/12/2020 08:12

absolutely wewillmeetagain,

people shouldnt decide their vote on the information, the facts, the history, their critical thinking and reasoning. they should look at social media and decide based on whether people have not spoke nicely enough to them.
nasty remainers - always asking brexiteers what the benefits are. how very dare they.

HerLadySheep · 11/12/2020 08:13

The UK has chosen to leave the EU and revoke all of the existing deals it holds with the EU and many other countries by virtue of its' EU membership. Everything that now happens is due to this decision, it's not the "nasty EU being mean" it's what happens when you don't have agreements in place.

We told you this would happen, we were derided, ridiculed and told it was all nonsense, so as you said....suck it up buttercup, you won, you knew exactly what you were voting for!
