To spend £45 on wrapping paper?

OH thinks I'm a nutcase 😂

But in my defence...It's so pretty! It's from not on the high street.

Normally I'd buy from a normal shop but all the sets have been a bit rubbish this year and i have this weird thing where there has to be a colour scheme (I know I'm a lunatic)

This isn't for DD present by the way. She wouldn't give a shit if I wrapped them in tin foil 😅

This is for family presents.

I've just spent £30 on wrapping paper 😢. In my defence I ordered some really nice recyclable paper from IKEA which wasn't delivered when expected and when I FINALLY managed to get through to customer services I was told they didn't have any. So I ended up having to order some other paper online which was much more expensive. But £30.00!!!!!! I can't imagine spending more than that. So £45 does seem a bit U.

Giraffey1 · 11/12/2020 21:47

Seems such a waste to me. I’d be spending the money on the contents, not the wrapping paper. Personally, I think it’s bonkers. But hey, it’s your money, you waste it.

theotheranna · 11/12/2020 23:05

I think you've done a good thing buying from a smaller business. I myself as an illustrator have struggled massively this year but Christmas sales have kept food on the table for our family. People have no idea how much it costs a small business/self employed person to make a product; lots of creatives use local printing companies ,prices are evidently higher than say printing in China like all supermarkets can afford to.
Ofc gift wrap is £1 in Aldi, Aldi is a corporation, they buy huge quantities so they afford to keep prices low, they can negotiate prices.
One thing though marketplaces like NOTHS, Etsy etc usually charge makers extortionate commissions and fees, it's always best to google them and see if they have their own website&shop, more money in the little people's pockets.
I don't do gift wrap but other things, have no idea which shop you've bought from but if they're small and print their stuff in the UK you've made a difference to them (it does make one to me every time I get a sale).

PickAChew · 11/12/2020 23:06

I've got a massive box of rolls of paper, accrued over the years. I'll be using that, this year.

Newmumatlast · 11/12/2020 23:15

Do what you like with your money but I personally couldn't bring myself to spend so much on something that will be ripped up and thrown away, even if recycled. If I received a gift wrapped in such expensive paper and realised how much it cost I would feel sick to be honest. You're not obligated to do anything particular with your money and it really isn't for you to solve the worlds problems but personally I would rather spend £2 on standard recyclable paper and donate the rest to shelter or my local food bank. You may even donate alot and its no criticism of you in that as I said you can do what you want as it is your money its just I personally have a line I won't cross in terms of the cost of things. I appreciate it may be because I have first hand experience of people struggling though and I'd feel like I was being offensive to those friends if I wrapped their gift in paper that cost more than their food shop

I wouldn’t. Enjoy your lovely paper, OP!

To each their own :)

I get whatever is going for 50p or so per roll after Christmas, stick it under the bed and get it back out 11 months later. I also use those ribbons you get sewn into garments that you're supposed to loop around the hanger. They are bloody annoying so I cut them off and it turns out they make great strings for home made gift tags.

evenBetter · 12/12/2020 00:26

If you really liked the paper you could have got it (or a version of) as wallpaper, to properly enjoy it, or have it as a phone background. You’ve just spent half a days wages (for me) on pretty landfill
And now are bragging about how much money you have to literally throw in the bin, which is a bit depressing

eggandonion · 12/12/2020 15:56

The ribbons on hangers... my friend calls clothes snot!
I wouldn't spend so much on paper, but I wouldn't deny anyone else the right. I eat out ...I miss that. I buy handbags that don't cost the earth, but other people buy expensive ones. Some people buy paintings.
I love the posh wrapping in continental shops, even for cakes.

More money than sense

Iamthewombat · 12/12/2020 16:41

The OP might have more sense than money. You don’t know her.

For the people outraged by the cost of the OP’s wrapping paper because she could have given the money to charity instead: do you lie in wait for people wearing expensive labels, accost them and tell them that they could have bought clothes in the market and donated the difference to a food bank? How about in car parks? Do you look out for people driving expensive cars and tell them off for not driving a ten year old Fiesta and donating the difference to the poor and needy?

SquishSquashSqueeze · 12/12/2020 16:42

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady

This paper is recyclable
As are the 3 for 2 rolls in Tesco this year
Bikingbear · 12/12/2020 16:55

The OP might have more sense than money.

If she had more sense than money she wouldn't be questioning the price of a roll of paper. She just wouldn't buy it or even consider buying it.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 12/12/2020 16:58

Squishsquash - I didn't buy the paper because it was recyclable. I bought it because it was the only one I found that I like.

The recyclable comment was in response to someone mentioning the environmental impact.

I think PPs comment about not acting people outside designer shops to tell them they should buy from the market and donate to charity is spot on.

Bikingbear - and if you had any sense you would read the full thread.

(Hint - it's not £45 a roll)

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady I love wrapping, too! Best job ever. I love making them look beautiful and I love the excited look people get when they get given one.

Probably worth pointing out here that no-one 'lay in wait' for the OP and accosted her about spending £45 on wrapping paper.

She posted an AIBU on MN - the busiest board here - to explain exactly what she'd done and and asked everyone what they thought about it.

Some, unsurprisingly, think it's wasteful and ridiculous. Others think it's amazing and haterz gonna hate. That's it really. But the OP did ask.

TheChosenTwo · 12/12/2020 19:07

I buy a similar navy with gold stars paper from Cox&Cox. I buy 2 rolls every year, they’re 10 metres each. I then get 4 different rolls of coordinating ribbons. The paper is reversible and is a pretty copper colour on the other side. Think it costs me about £70 a year but there’s always a little bit left over.
Stocking things get wrapped in different much jazzier paper, but this paper is my favourite, nice and thick, doesn’t tear on sharp corners and looks pretty under the tree. I love wrapping.
I don’t do it for anyone else, don’t imagine anyone gives a shit what their present looks like, it’s for me!
Yanbu.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 12/12/2020 19:13

I probably spent similar on several rolls of paper, boxes, ribbons and sparkly gift toppings. This has been a hard year and I want to go all-out to make Christmas Day special for people.

FangsForTheMemory · 12/12/2020 19:18

I spent (I think) £2.50 on one roll and had leftover gift tags that I saved from last year. I resented the £2.50, but at least it was recyclable. You could have spent a fiver on paper and given the rest of the money to charity. It's not even like Christmas cards, which at least get looked at for a while.

Winterwoollies · 12/12/2020 20:05

Jesus Christ the charity mob 🙄

Do you wear a hair shirt daily? Flagellate?

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 12/12/2020 20:27

You "resented" spending £2.50 on wrapping paper? Interesting...Hmm
