OH thinks I'm a nutcase 😂

But in my defence...It's so pretty! It's from not on the high street.

Normally I'd buy from a normal shop but all the sets have been a bit rubbish this year and i have this weird thing where there has to be a colour scheme (I know I'm a lunatic)

This isn't for DD present by the way. She wouldn't give a shit if I wrapped them in tin foil 😅

This is for family presents.

One year I bought a load of Christmas bags for presents from a store which was closing down very cheap They lasted for years and my DM insisted on either giving me the bags back after Christmas or reusing them the following year. I prefer to use these as I then wrap the presents in Christmas tissue paper. Much easier to do. What I do splash out on are really nice Christmas napkins and matching paper plates

TheWichitaWineOne · 11/12/2020 01:19

On reflection, I can't actually remember the last time I received a gift that was gussied up with swishy paper and matchy ribbons. I think the family and friends I exchange gifts with are probably all using the same sort of plain paper/paper bags/reused gift wrap etc. and we're handing many of them round over the course of the year Grin. I like using real ribbons, as they can be used in quite a few ways, for kids' hair, crafts and so on.

I love a previous poster's idea of using wax to seal paper instead of tape - I'm going to experiment with that.

@StoneofDestiny

Loads of cheap, cheerful and styling ideas in the internet using paper bags, brown paper, tartan paper........loads more ideas on there, much cheaper and more stylish than expensive wrap.
Tbf that largely depends on how much you like brown and tartan.

They're beautifully done but definitely not 'me' iykwim.

I guess people's individual take of wrapping paper is one of those things that falls into the 'marmite' category...either a big deal or totally unimportant, both of which are fine.

I find not on the high street so over priced .
I do like nice wrapping paper though but maybe not 45 quids worth !

Fluffybutter · 11/12/2020 08:09

@Quaagars

That's how I worked out Santa wasn't real, the presents from Santa were wrapped in the same paper as the ones to my mum and dad from each other. Parenting fail!

Ha, see, rookie mistake Grin
That's why the stocking presents are always wrapped in a different wrapping paper to the main presents in case they "twig" lol

Yep , exactly what I do too ! Feel like I’ve made a rod for my own back though ..

If you Google the name of the maker you will usually find that they also sell via their own website. The prices are often a little cheaper because they don’t have to account for NOTHS’s cut.

listsandbudgets · 11/12/2020 08:16

If you can afford it why not?

At first, it seemed horrendously extravagant but then I thought about threads on here about people buying expensive makeup and toiletries and no one berates them.

I subscribe to papergang which includes wrapping paper from time to time and to be honest adds up to an eye watering amount to spend on stationary every year but it does provide me with some lovely gifts to give at Christmas / birthdays as well.

Plus your wrapping paper is reusable :)

I think as long as you can feed yourself, pay all the bills, children's clothes etc. give a little bit to charity the rest is yours to spend as you choose.

Oh that’s a good tip, thanks . Wish I’d known that before I spent so much money on a picture for dh 😬

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady I, for one, would know you’d spent a decent amount on the paper, and I would appreciate it. I’m probably a bit weird, but good wrapping paper and accessories and a good pen make me happy. I spend hours wrapping presents, and wrapping them well, because I’m a bit sad 😂

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 11/12/2020 13:54

@hadjab- welcome to the sad club. I'm happy to be a member (if a bit skint now)

Totally wasteful, it just goes in the bin!

amusedbush · 11/12/2020 14:00

Fuck spending that on wrapping paper - I didn’t spend much more than £45 on my mum’s Christmas present 😂

I bought my wrapping paper and tags 3 for 2 and 25% from Tesco. It’s beautiful though, it’s dark blue with woodland animals on it Grin

TheWichitaWineOne · 11/12/2020 14:26

Not sad at all, obviously. Although in a similar-ish vein I guess, I'm a stationery lover. I have some beautiful pens and really enjoy buying a particular French ink that I love, and look forward to buying diary inserts for my planner every year Grin.

But themed wrapping paper with matching bows occupies a different space for me and doesn't incite the same love one bit. Plus, the 'it just gets binned' aspect is hard to get past for me.

angelofthenorth72 · 11/12/2020 15:53

I must admit I also like hessian/jute bags either with a festive design on or tied with Christmassy ribbon (for adults)! And then they can re-use them for their own wrapping in subsequent years, or give them back for me to re-use!

D4rwin · 11/12/2020 15:55

Brown recyclable paper for all year round here. It's a colour scheme too. If I want to be fancy I use the nicer string Grin

readingismycardio · 11/12/2020 16:04

OP, I am sorry for all the tough comments you got. Buy the freaking wrapping paper if it makes you happy. I take pride in the way the presents I give look.

I, personally, wouldn't spend that, probably, I'd rather get myself something nice 😂 But definitely go for it, you're an adult, you had a tough year and you deserve it!🎄

80sColourfulChristmas · 11/12/2020 16:31

@Springersrock

I’m slightly obsessed with wrapping gifts.

YANBU.

I’ve just bought plain white and brown paper, but have wasted far too much time making tiny Fimo stars and orange slices to finish them off

Orange slices?!?!?! WTF?!?!?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
TheWichitaWineOne · 11/12/2020 17:52

Orange slices?!?!?! WTF?!?!?!

Dried orange slices have been decorating Christmas stuff for decades, haven't they?? My mother used 40 years ago!

TheWichitaWineOne · 11/12/2020 17:59

*them

SlipperTripper · 11/12/2020 18:07

45 quid a roll, or for multiple rolls to do multiple presents?

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 11/12/2020 18:33

@slippertripper

It's £2 a sheet. To wrap all the presents

We’ve got them on our door wreath.
Thelikelylass · 11/12/2020 19:58

Again with the frugality...I use the orange slices from the wreath several times over the holiday period in our mulled wine. Wonderful flavour of petrol fumes and pulled pork from the nearby restaurant make it all the more delicious. I have even been known to clamber into the loft to retrieve the slices during summer when we make a sangria and find ourselves Orange-deficient.

gingergiraffe · 11/12/2020 20:34

This amuses me. When I was young I don’t think my parents ever bought new wrapping paper. We would carefully unwrap presents and use the paper again the next year. Obviously we got presents from a few relatives also so this added to the reusable paper for next year. We just did it and never thought about what other people did.

Now adults, we too made sure that presents from Father Christmas to our children had different wrapping paper to the ones from us.
