To think London commute towns are no better than Edinburgh for raising a family?

JenXG · 10/12/2020 09:38

So basically DH and I are having a debate on whether to leave Edinburgh and move to a commute town outside London. (we have to stick with Edinburgh / London as working in financial sector but both of us would avoid London because of traffic/pollution/crowded streets).

The main reason for DH favouring those commute towns is that they seem to have loads of good schools for DS (4mo) to choose from compared to Edinburgh where there are only a few (or hardly any if his standard). He has high hope for DS. Also the A-level system is widely recognised across different countries (so potential for studying overseas) but the same cant be said for the Scotland system.

My worry is that we are giving up preferred lifestyle for a very small difference in schooling. I grew up in a big city and always need busy streets nearby. I understand some places such as Guildford will have its own town centre but there are still fewer things going on compared to Edinburgh. For example, there are a wide range of fine restuarants, several theatres & cinemas, pubs, etc in Edinburgh but living in Guildford we'd still have to go to London for a night out? I'd assume activities for young kids are more available in Edinburgh than in Guildford? E.g. Edinburgh has a zoo, lots of museums, and a coastline where you can do kayaking. Also Guildford is one of the busier towns as I understand. Some other commute towns are even quieter. So we'd highly likely end up travelling to London a lot which is not fun (I'm far more used to walking or driving a little bit to favourite places than hours of trains/tubes).

What do people think? I haven't been to many places in the southern area. Maybe I have misunderstood what life would be like there? Would you relocate if you were us?

There’s about 7 places available at The Dick Vet (I wonder if they still sing the song with the line ‘f the university’) each year for home Scottish students (1st degree so Scot.gov pick up the tab, got a degree already, you can pay your way) so competition is fierce. They are not shy that the market the target is fee paying and international.*

Really? Their website says the 2020 allocation was 42, with 30 for rUK and 35 for international / grad students.

Public transport especially the trains has been horrendous with train cancellations, overcrowded and breakdowns for many years even before COVID

I think that is a nationwide problem. SWR was terrible - and has now given back the franchise (it is negotiating a management contract now).

Remember the mess at princes street gardens after the hell that is the Christmas markets Oh dear! I visited in 2016 and loved the Edinburgh Christmas markets! It was right up there with the best of the ones in Germany. I did hear about the mess though.

Just how shit is the weather in Edinburgh? I currently live much further south in the Channel Islands and am considering a move.
I've not been to the Channel Islands in the winter but understand it's DAMP.

Jersey is about 500 miles south of Edinburgh - there is quite a difference in climate. I love Jersey but given the choice of Jersey and Edinburgh I would probably choose Edinburgh (the one downside for me not being the weather, but the tourists).

@SabrinaThwaite last time I looked, three years ago, they didn’t make a distinction between EU applicants and Scottish applicants. Have they separated them out? If not, that number of 42 would be a combined number of EU and Scottish students.
Perhaps with us leaving the EU then they will be able to offer all those 42 places to Scottish students.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 11/12/2020 09:52

Lived in Edinburgh as a student and it get very cold, a real cuts through you cold
Overall dry, not really too rainy. It does rain but not like Glasgow and the west coast where it statistically rains every other day

The scale of Edinburgh is great,it’s all walkable. Meadows in the middle. Portobello and Tranent beaches. I feel I’m in a film set when I’m in Edinburgh it’s so atmospheric

cologne4711 · 11/12/2020 09:58

Also, I feel like if we’re discounting things by buggy accessibility - Guildford loses it’s dry ski slope, surely

I didn't realise Guildford had a dry ski slope. Aldershot has one.

Jodri · 11/12/2020 09:59

@SabrinaThwaite I can only see admission statistics for Edinburgh university on their web pages up to 2019 and it’s combined EU and Scottish applicants. Can you link to your information?

No, they don’t separate them out, but given that the fee income is the same from Scottish and EU students then they should be treated on equal merits, ie the places go to the candidates with the most appropriate grades / work experience etc.

My neighbour’s DD went to the Dick a few years back - she had to work really hard to get all the necessary experience (as well as top grades).

Ooooh, ooooh, I've got one......

"Monica Lilley, 68, a well-known vegan campaigner from Guildford"

This lady has been around for YEARS, I'm 50, and she was stalking the streets of Gford when I was a teen. She's really famous locally as she always get's thrown out of schools, shops and venues.... bless.

We did also have a bearded lady, she was actually a lovely lady, but very startling to behold. She died a couple of years ago though.

“I didn't realise Guildford had a dry ski slope. Aldershot has one.“

Someone said it did... I believed them...

Is someone making up amenities for Guildford? Shock well that’s just cheating.

Janegrey333 · 11/12/2020 10:50

Guildford and skiing are poles - ha ha - apart.

cologne4711 · 11/12/2020 10:50

It has two 50m swimming pools - Spectrum leisure centre which I think also has an ice rink; and Surrey Sports Park, part of the university, which has great facilities too.

Really don't know about the ski slope though. The only other one I know about "locally" (ie not in Scotland) is in Milton Keynes.

cologne4711 · 11/12/2020 10:52

It appears that it does: guildfordskislope.co.uk/

This was the one I knew about: www.rushmoor.gov.uk/article/3000/Alpine-Snowsports-Centre about 20-30 mins away from Guildford

cologne4711 · 11/12/2020 10:54

And I see that there is one to the south of Edinburgh too www.midlothian.gov.uk/info/200281/snowsports_centre

Janegrey333 · 11/12/2020 10:55

15 pages and barely anything back from the OP hmm

I imagine she is keeping an eye on the thread and thinking she has more than achieved her aim.
🙄

What, to reveal one poster as a Scotland-hating-but-Edinburgh-in-particular-loathing loon personage? 😇
And I see that there is one to the south of Edinburgh too www.midlothian.gov.uk/info/200281/snowsports_centre
Ah, but that's not in Edinburgh. So at the moment it's illegal to travel to it from Edinburgh (unless you're under 18 doing organised sports, so the 4month old will be fine). Ditto IKEA, which is also in Midlothian. Which is outrageous.

SabrinaThwaite · 11/12/2020 11:01

The Spectrum pool is 25m and 8 lanes.

University of Surrey pool is 50m and 8 lanes too (so technically not Olympic size - but then neither is the Commie).

But Guildford does have a 50m lido.

Just how shit is the weather in Edinburgh? I currently live much further south in the Channel Islands and am considering a move.
It's considerably colder in Edinburgh and has a dark, damp fog called the Har, which descends on the city from time to time. You would mourn the loss of your summers - compared to The Channel Islands. I've been bloody freezing in Edinburgh in August.
VerlynWebbe · 11/12/2020 11:49

The lack of light is hard in winter. The kids are going to school and coming back in the dark these days. I bet Guildford has lower rates of SAD.

LovingCountryLife · 11/12/2020 11:58

@sunsalutations

I'm going to go against the grain a bit. I live in Guildford and love it! I grew up near to Edinburgh and would never go back. My teenage DCs are not in the hothouse private schools here (thankfully), but in a very good state (who send off students to Oxbridge every year, if you want that). Guildford is compact in a way that Edinburgh is not (Princes Street!); it has a good cultural life and you can be at the South Bank centre in 30 mins on the train (if you hop on at Woking). I know all my neighbours, the Surrey Hills AONB are 15 mins drive away and it's warm here Smile. I don't miss the freezing fog, the cold North Sea winds or the fact it takes you ages to get anywhere in Edinburgh on the bus/car. I mostly WFH; I think this will be a permanent thug now due to COVID so don't commute. The leisure centre is great ... etc. etc
I agree, I live near Guildford and love it, it has everything I want, some outstanding state schools, surrounded by beautiful (as you say, AONB) countryside, easy commute to London (outside of Covid, I work there most days), my neighbours are lovely, (my village has great community spirit).. my quality of life could not be better. And the weather, I could not stand living in Edinburgh, I've visited a few times and every time no matter the season, it's been windy and chilly and the temperature never seemed to get higher than 17 degrees, it's always cloudy, even in the summer! Surrey gets tons more sunshine!

The Times seems to agree with us Grin

@Scbchl

My brother is in a finance role. They moved down to London for his work and stayed in Seven oaks. They didn't last a year until they transferred back and my niece is at private school in Edinburgh now and doing really well.
Would you mind sharing a bit detail on why they didn't last a year? We are considering Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells. They seem to be nice places.

So you’re back OP. Not a word of acknowledgement or thanks for several pages of advice and just asking more questions. Think you have forgotten your manners...

myla1 · 11/12/2020 12:22

OP, can I ask why you are only considering moving to a suburban town? Why not come a bit further into London? Why Sevenoaks and Guildford?

myla1 · 11/12/2020 12:27

Also, OP, the main difference will be it’s effectively a different climate in SE England to Scotland and this is particularly noticeable these days in the summer. For instance, it’s generally 30 degrees or higher here in mid-August. Everyone is doing barbecues and moaning they can’t sleep due to the heat. Meanwhile, kids in Scotland are back in school in mid-August, shivering in the drizzle. It’s very different in this respect. Climate affects your lifestyle, rather than this or that school.
