Really very sad with France!

I am quietly furious with France. We have been going to France between three and four times a year, every year for pretty much all of my adult life. We have spent most summer holidays, skiing and all the rest, choosing France as our destination over all over countries.

Every week I buy French cheeses, wine and truffle oils, and we are very big fans of France and French cuisine.

Even taking into account that Macron should hope and push for the best deal for their fishing industry, I still find it incredulous and insulting that they should be demanding ten years of fish, and are offering us a paltry percentage. Ten years.
They are in a total stand off regarding an even playing field, I understand the reasons for this, but honestly they are pushing all of us to a no deal outcome, that will see French fisherman with no catch whatsoever, and high tariffs slapped on all imports from France. Tourism will be destroyed as people will no longer wish to go there. It could poison relations for decades.

I am aware of the history between the UK and France, but rather naively thought we had moved on from that a very long time ago, I am in despair at the eleventh hour demands, and feel this is in very bad faith. It has really highlighted to me how little respect France have for us as a country.

I feel like I never want to go again, despite having a tentative booking for a holiday in the spring of next year.

The remainers were hopeless during the referendum because they didn't believe people would vote for Brexit. If they had spelt out eg the loss of scientific education and financial support for science and education, the potential problem on the NI/Eire border, the fishing issue and implications for rights for workers and the environment, the vote may have gone otherwise.

Oh fuck off with the gaslighting. The campaign to remain was either dismissed as project fear, or equally dismissed with "we did all that in 1971". The only problem was remainers traded in facts and leavers traded in fantasy fairytales.

And the GFA and NI were mentioned in close detail before the vote.

You're incredible Grin

NoMeatIsHumane · 08/12/2020 14:04

I've got an idea. Let's leave all the fish alone. Sorted.

KleinBlue · 08/12/2020 14:06

That's an excellent idea. Will no one think of the fish and pelagic sovereignty?
VulvaPerson · 08/12/2020 14:10

All countries will be wanting to do whats best for them. Wasn't 'our' reason for leaving, that UK would be better off because of it? No reason why other countries would not also make sure they get the best deal!

Ihaveabranchstuckupmybauble · 08/12/2020 14:12

Problem with the fish is that they swim, therefore one minute they're in French waters the next in UK waters so now how the fuck are they supposed to know which nationality they are and who is allowed to kill them

Peregrina · 08/12/2020 14:13

But there are pelagic fish and demersal fish...... if that helps?

AlexaShutUp · 08/12/2020 14:13

So now it's the remainers' fault because they didn't tell people that Brexit was going to be shit??? We were lining up to tell everyone why it was a mistake but our concerns were dismissed as Project Fear and Michael Gove proclaimed that the country had had enough of experts. If people willfully chose to turn a blind eye to the warnings, that cannot be blamed on the remain campaign.

I do think that the Remain campaign failed to make the positive case for staying in the EU, and I sincerely regret that failure, but there was no shortage at all of warnings about the risks of opting out. All of the issues that you have mentioned were highlighted repeatedly. The mess that we are in now is literally what people voted for.

laudemio · 08/12/2020 14:14

Yes, we all stop eating the fish and polluting their oceans and waterways.

Having mentioned all these things several times in the run up to the referendum, this gaslighting bullshit makes me chuckle.

Also

the potential problem on the NI/Eire border

Eire Hmm Grin

Really very sad with France!
bellinisurge · 08/12/2020 14:21

And fuck off with "Eire " while you are at it.

caperplips · 08/12/2020 14:21

@crosstalk please stop referring to Ireland as Eire - it has already been explained on this very thread, as well as several others, why this is wrong and annoying. It's not ROI or Republic of Ireland either, it is simply Ireland. Thanks

caperplips · 08/12/2020 14:22

Oooh cross posts! Great minds and all that!

Also a reminder to Brexiteers what the queen thinks about your shit

Really very sad with France!
Ihaveabranchstuckupmybauble · 08/12/2020 14:24

The remainers were not the hopeless, the hopeless were the people that listened to bullshit and consequently voted for it without doing any research for themselves and without forward thinking.

laudemio · 08/12/2020 14:25

@kleinblue whatever the OP there is nothing forcing people to respond with personal attacks. The issue with France is being widely reported in the press, so I dont know why people are piling on in this way. Why not take the higher ground. We will have the opportunity to rejoin the EU in the future, I strongly suspect we will. So why not help win hearts and minds to that end. The EU isn't perfect but it has many benefits and ironically the brexit shockwave is likely to move Europe more towards trading bloc, and away from ever closer integration. Possibly a two-speed Europe. It is not just about the posters but those reading too.

wellthatsunusual · 08/12/2020 14:25

Maybe Crosstalk also talks about Deutschland, España, Italia etc. Although somehow I doubt it...

Ihaveabranchstuckupmybauble · 08/12/2020 14:25

Brenda's hat says it all really!

DGRossetti · 08/12/2020 14:26

I do think that the Remain campaign failed to make the positive case for staying in the EU,

That is kind of self evident, because people chose Leave over Remain.

However, I have yet to meet, or encounter online a single person who admits to voting leave and is now owning what is happening without a truckload of amnesia as to what Leave actually promised.

Because the sordid truth is the Leave campaign won by promises that were impossible to deliver. Not difficult. Not complicated. Impossible.

And no one has explained why 52/48 is an acceptable way to decide the future of 100% of a population, when women (or men) still have the vote. Surely disregarding the wishes of half of the population is now an established way to run the UK. (Stops there before making a sledgehammer comment explaining why so many people appear confused about gender these days).

Oops.

bellinisurge · 08/12/2020 14:27

It is a great hat

NobleElephantheThird · 08/12/2020 14:28

Brexit is the British version of the French Revolution. Really the French should harbour some secret respect for that.

Peregrina · 08/12/2020 14:29

As a staunch Remainer, I think the Remain side didn't put the case forcefully - but even the positive things like the Good Friday Agreement were glossed over. And you need to admit, that significant numbers in England neither know nor care about N Ireland. Indeed some posters on these threads seemed to be unaware that it was part of the UK.
