Really very sad with France!

I am quietly furious with France. We have been going to France between three and four times a year, every year for pretty much all of my adult life. We have spent most summer holidays, skiing and all the rest, choosing France as our destination over all over countries.

Every week I buy French cheeses, wine and truffle oils, and we are very big fans of France and French cuisine.

Even taking into account that Macron should hope and push for the best deal for their fishing industry, I still find it incredulous and insulting that they should be demanding ten years of fish, and are offering us a paltry percentage. Ten years.
They are in a total stand off regarding an even playing field, I understand the reasons for this, but honestly they are pushing all of us to a no deal outcome, that will see French fisherman with no catch whatsoever, and high tariffs slapped on all imports from France. Tourism will be destroyed as people will no longer wish to go there. It could poison relations for decades.

I am aware of the history between the UK and France, but rather naively thought we had moved on from that a very long time ago, I am in despair at the eleventh hour demands, and feel this is in very bad faith. It has really highlighted to me how little respect France have for us as a country.

I feel like I never want to go again, despite having a tentative booking for a holiday in the spring of next year.

bet you don't read french Perhaps work on your grammar before you post. I have a wonderful French accent thank you! Not that I am likely to need it for much longer Grin

On a serious note, I hope the grown ups can join the discussion today in Brussels, and we will see an outcome either way.

Ok so long then. You dont need to come back. It s not like we will miss you 😉

And by the way, if you are so unhappy you should have protested louder after the referendum.

And no you are wrong if you think we have muxh to loose if there is a no deal.
ROI has everything to loose with a no deal and you lot in the UK are a disgrace because you couldnt care less about what will happened to Ireland. But why would you care? It goes to show that Westminster is still treating the ROI as potato eaters with no education.

Shame on you UK

frumpety · 08/12/2020 10:33

We will see the Royal Navy patrolling the channel in a matter of weeks on a no deal, and that is just the start.

Hilarious ! Surely all the Royal navy vessels will be helping out the Fishery protection squadron ?

teateateateateamoretea · 08/12/2020 10:33

I do think many posters on here are severely underestimating the strength of bad feeling that is going to be caused by this if Macron continues to threaten us all with his veto. Calling it melodramatic? Seriously I almost pity them, what a rude awakening they will have.

I don't Macron or anyone else in the EU trying to make laws specifically to break the laws and agreements they already made, do you?
Nope, thats all the UK. Actually announcing that they intend to break international laws, the Brexit agreements, and that they can't be trusted by anyone.
And you're still wittering about fish? Is OP actually Boris?

ReturntoSpamfritters · 08/12/2020 10:33

@MrsMiaWallis

Try reading a French paper instead of the rags in Britain

😃😃 French newspapers are not bastions of fairness and impartiality

And the Times is? Owned by Rupert Murdoch, who hates the EU. Don't make me laugh

I've been buying New York bagels for years, but I didn't realise that means New York owes me something...

LakieLady · 08/12/2020 10:35

@Hopdathelf

Do you really think you paid into a club for years and got nothing in return?

I can see how a lot of people in the south east of England feel that way. As a more affluent area they see few of the types of projects funded by the EU in other parts of the UK. I say that as someone who divides their time between NI and London suburbs with family in the south east who I visit often. Lots of projects, buildings, facilities in NI marked up to show EU projects, fewer in London and SE.

EU funding is given because these areas are less affluent than the SE generally. When EU funding stops, Westminster will have to pay and I can see the cycle starting again, leading to, at best, federalisation, and at worst, the total collapse of the UK into six separate countries.

Actually, the EU funded regeneration and arts projects in the SE under Interreg, a special EU fund for projects in regions that bordered regions in other countries. There were lots of projects in places like Newhaven, Hastings, and Hailsham in E Sx, and in similar areas in Kent.

They also put a lot of money into places that had assisted area status, which include Hastings, Thanet, Medway/Sheerness and Clacton/Jaywick.

The loss of EU funding for deprived areas, at a time when central government funding for local government has been cut to the bone, will be catastrophic for some of these places.

France will be gutted, I'm sure.

I'm not sure what your definition of a grown up is if your op bleats about France being a meanie despite all the cheese and wine you've bought.

fierypepper · 08/12/2020 10:35

Not going again is stupid - it's not the average French farmer, vineyard owner or hotel worker who is making the decisions you don't like, and they are the ones who would be losing out by you not going/not buying French products any more.

teateateateateamoretea · 08/12/2020 10:36

unfortunately the grown ups have to put up with the toddlers the UK sends to negotiate for them, which limits what they can achieve.

You will, because she eats massive amounts of French cheese. Like, tons.
Plus, she voted for Brexshit, so I don't think she should be allowed into France anyway. Guards!

wellthatsunusual · 08/12/2020 10:36

As someone who lives in a part of the UK that is being entirely screwed by Brexit, I really don't have strong feelings on France.

The UK government doesn't care about the interests of its own citizens, it sounds like at least France maybe does have an interest in ensuring the best outcome for their citizens. Lucky them.

AethelsWhiteGoose · 08/12/2020 10:37

Don’t worry OP, I have no problem with the French or Macron, in fact, quite the opposite. I’ll buy all the French cheese and wine you don’t want SmileWine

Friendsoftheearth · 08/12/2020 10:38

You do know New York Bagels is owned by a Mexican family business don't you? Grin

So I don't think you are being very fair to New York as its not a great exampel, I am pretty sure champagne however comes from the French champagne region the last time I checked ssd

In my opinion at the heart of UK/EU schism is that we have different rules for negotiation. It's a cultural clash, one that really pushes our buttons. Taking an objective stance, you can't blame the French for acting in a way that is completely acceptable to their cultural rules. In Europe, we are in the minority in the way we understand negotiation and it is foolish to let a difference like this get in the way of centuries of peaceful and profitable trading.

Zilla1 · 08/12/2020 10:40

You've persuaded me. And I'm not even in my chateau at the moment. I think the Mail and Telegraph captured it perfectly with the outrage about Brit's use of holiday homes being made harder. The EU are busy being spiteful. Do they not remember who won the war?

bellinisurge · 08/12/2020 10:41

"We have a representative government who has been trying to balance the mandate to leave along with the fact there was a significant minority who wanted to stay. "

Seriously? Are we talking about the Uk? At what point has this government sought to balance my views with those of the Brexiteers? I must have missed that. Or you are dreaming@Empressofthemundane

Friendsoftheearth · 08/12/2020 10:41

I have always wondered if the anti British brigade on here are posting from overseas, or if they actually live here with that level of bitterness and revulsion for their own country?

I find it truly fascinating that you can live, and perhaps be born in a country that you find so repellent, that as an adult why on earth would you choose to stay here?

It makes no sense whatsoever. Either stay and champion your own interests and support the country, or leave and be happier. Festering is not good for the soul.

I wish that people had fully grasped what was at stake in the referendum four years ago. Sadly, it's too late now.

bellinisurge · 08/12/2020 10:42

So now you want me to leave because I don't agree with you @Friendsoftheearth . You are a piece of work.
I love this country and I despise the dog shit it is being dragged through.
