Really very sad with France!

I am quietly furious with France. We have been going to France between three and four times a year, every year for pretty much all of my adult life. We have spent most summer holidays, skiing and all the rest, choosing France as our destination over all over countries.

Every week I buy French cheeses, wine and truffle oils, and we are very big fans of France and French cuisine.

Even taking into account that Macron should hope and push for the best deal for their fishing industry, I still find it incredulous and insulting that they should be demanding ten years of fish, and are offering us a paltry percentage. Ten years.
They are in a total stand off regarding an even playing field, I understand the reasons for this, but honestly they are pushing all of us to a no deal outcome, that will see French fisherman with no catch whatsoever, and high tariffs slapped on all imports from France. Tourism will be destroyed as people will no longer wish to go there. It could poison relations for decades.

I am aware of the history between the UK and France, but rather naively thought we had moved on from that a very long time ago, I am in despair at the eleventh hour demands, and feel this is in very bad faith. It has really highlighted to me how little respect France have for us as a country.

I feel like I never want to go again, despite having a tentative booking for a holiday in the spring of next year.

The UK voted to tell Europe to F off. Why are you surprised?

sonicbook · 08/12/2020 10:19

@RedToothBrush must be correct. This is a goady post. I refuse to believe anyone is actually that entitled.

Friendsoftheearth · 08/12/2020 10:19

I do think many posters on here are severely underestimating the strength of bad feeling that is going to be caused by this if Macron continues to threaten us all with his veto. Calling it melodramatic? Seriously I almost pity them, what a rude awakening they will have.
They do not seem to understand the strength of feeling on the ground from their chateaus in France.

We will see the Royal Navy patrolling the channel in a matter of weeks on a no deal, and that is just the start.

@Friendsoftheearth

I don't think for a minute Boris Johnson will cave, his survival and legacy depends on it.
Nah. He’s fucked that up already.
Kalula · 08/12/2020 10:20

France is way over-rated, so is their food. Been there once, that's enough, too much of a gimmick, especially Paris. There are more exciting countries to explore than France. Broaden your horizons and culture and explore (post-covid obviously) other countries.

This article from the Times sums up the situation perfectly.

The issue I have here is I don't trust the UK's negotiating position is in the best interest of us British citizens. I couldn't care less about French fishermen or cheese exporters. I care about my and my children's living standards here. I think we'll be worse off and the only culprits I see are ERG type rabid brexiters.

MrsMiaWallis · 08/12/2020 10:21

French food is generally pretty terrible these days tbf.

PerkingFaintly · 08/12/2020 10:22

@ghostyslovesheets

This thread is gold!

Basically the Uk got up and told the EU it would be better off alone (although the EU suspected a third party was involved (US)) EU agreed to a divorce and now the UK is turning up demanding sex and it’s ironing done - EU needs to LTB once and for all.

I know!

The resemblance to a man who's spent 20 years telling his wife he's going to leave her for Kim Kardashian, and then finally goes and is shocked, SHOCKED!, that she stops cooking for him, is entirely undimmed, isn't it?

Next news flash: Kim ain't gonna take his calls...

Whenever I want to know how this government will behave next, I just channel the MN Relationship board. It's a very good predictor.

Wow, you totally sound like you know what you’re talking about 😂

Zilla1 · 08/12/2020 10:22

Boris' legacy, Friends? His management of Brexit and Covid will be his legacy, such as it is, much like Brexit and the hostile environment and its consequences will be Teresa's and Brexit and austerity will be Dave and George's. Let's hope they own it proudly.

You seriously need to chill for a bit.

sonicbook · 08/12/2020 10:25

@Friendsoftheearth I feel that, if this is genuine, it is you who is in for a rude awakening.

If this is not then 8/10... you've totally hooked me in! 🤣

BlueJag · 08/12/2020 10:26

You are absolutely right. The way France has been towards the UK is terrible. Even after liberation they refuse to help financially.
The French always see themselves as right. Fit example they want our waters but would they give us some land to farm?
They wouldn't at all. They are going to make our life miserable if they can but we've had worse.

Zilla1 · 08/12/2020 10:27

Wow Friends. If only that Times article was backed up by something by the Daily Mail and even the Telegraph. If The Spectator agreed then we'd have certainty and all the PPs pulling the curtain back on the Wizard of Oz should shut up.

Come on OP, sing us a tune.

I bet you do a cracking rendition of Dam busters whilst running around making like Biggles with finger “goggles” on.

Chocks away chaps!

Tally-ho!

Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera

giantangryrooster · 08/12/2020 10:29

Well I'm in a EU country and I feel rejected by you, REJECTED I say!

You don't want to play with us, yet want all the benefits you can get.

Sod the fishing territorial rights, I won't be able to buy Heinz salad cream 😤🤪.

teateateateateamoretea · 08/12/2020 10:29

All that love of France and yet you don't know the first thing about it. Try reading a French paper instead of the rags in Britain. Oh wait, bet you don't read french!!

Hmm

Christ this makes me angry. I think Brexiters and their bullish insistence on carrying on with this fucked up scheme without any preparation, thought, conversation, or idea of how the fuck they were going to do it needed to understand what was at stake SOME FUCKING TIME AGO.
MrsMiaWallis · 08/12/2020 10:31

Try reading a French paper instead of the rags in Britain

😃😃 French newspapers are not bastions of fairness and impartiality
