Really very sad with France!

I am quietly furious with France. We have been going to France between three and four times a year, every year for pretty much all of my adult life. We have spent most summer holidays, skiing and all the rest, choosing France as our destination over all over countries.

Every week I buy French cheeses, wine and truffle oils, and we are very big fans of France and French cuisine.

Even taking into account that Macron should hope and push for the best deal for their fishing industry, I still find it incredulous and insulting that they should be demanding ten years of fish, and are offering us a paltry percentage. Ten years.
They are in a total stand off regarding an even playing field, I understand the reasons for this, but honestly they are pushing all of us to a no deal outcome, that will see French fisherman with no catch whatsoever, and high tariffs slapped on all imports from France. Tourism will be destroyed as people will no longer wish to go there. It could poison relations for decades.

I am aware of the history between the UK and France, but rather naively thought we had moved on from that a very long time ago, I am in despair at the eleventh hour demands, and feel this is in very bad faith. It has really highlighted to me how little respect France have for us as a country.

I feel like I never want to go again, despite having a tentative booking for a holiday in the spring of next year.

I think France may have worked out that no deal will benefit them.
Absolutely. Whilst the UK has been fannying around they have be doing their homework.

@goldenharvest

It's more important to the EU and France that the UK are seen to not get a good deal, than for the EU to get a good deal. I'm sick to death of the EU and their games. These machinations and politicisation of trade are why we voted out.
Being seen to get a good deal has very little to do with it. The EU only wants a deal that doesn't disadvantage them, not too much to ask, is it? You voted out...well, its nearly Christmas. Enjoy.
CroissantMuncher · 08/12/2020 09:22

@TheKeatingFive
No, ireland would never vote to leave the EU as Ireland has been a net beneficiary and has also set itself up as a tax haven operating within the EU

Didkdt · 08/12/2020 09:22

@GoldfishParade

I think the idea that the EU never needed us is just as deluded as the idea that the UK was hard done by by being in the EU.

Has debate really become so polarised now?

Yes it has I’m afraid. I agree with you on this, but I’m glad we’re leaving now the negotiations have really soured my opinion of the EU Britain is being punished to discourage others from breaking away, and there is dissent about the EU growing across Europe
VanGoghsDog · 08/12/2020 09:23

@Friendsoftheearth

I have supported France in every way for decades. I am insulted.
Really weird.

Super. So which countries are indicating they will leave (via their population level approval ratings rather than anecdata about protestors brandishing sticks)?

shockthemonkey · 08/12/2020 09:25

Oh, OP, you're being a little bit U and I can see this has knocked you for six. You said:

the EU are just seeking to embarrass the UK with Johnson going there today, in precisely the same way they treated Theresa May.

But really, would you have all of the EU decision-makers and their hangers-on traipse over to London to thrash this out?

Of course it makes sense for Johnson to go there!

iseeu · 08/12/2020 09:26

@KleinBlue

What an incredibly weird post. Did you think France owed the UK some particular loyalty on fishing rights because you go there on holiday and buy French cheese weekly?
This!

OP it is a negotiation, we don't know what it is going on behind the scenes, and it isn't personal.

But if you want a more symbolic insight to the French mindset here, watch the film "Quai d'Orsay", the part when they are talking about sardines.

CroissantMuncher · 08/12/2020 09:26

@TheKeatingFive
The polls in the UK indicated a Remain win

bellinisurge · 08/12/2020 09:28

It's so sweet reading posts from people who still believe that the EU is about to fall. It's almost as if they don't live in a world where grown ups talk to each other, have differences and yet work it out . Wait, they are Brexiteers so that would be their reality.

Didkdt · 08/12/2020 09:28

Shhh she doesn’t want to hear that.

TheKeatingFive · 08/12/2020 09:28

The polls in the UK indicated a Remain win

That’s not what I asked. And they indicated a close contest.

Come on. What have you got?

Inertia · 08/12/2020 09:28

Tourists go to France from other countries too. I doubt they'll miss you that much.

TheKeatingFive · 08/12/2020 09:29

Shhh she doesn’t want to hear that.

Hear what? You have no data to back up your position and you know it.

Empressofthemundane · 08/12/2020 09:29

France is acting aggressively in their own self interest.

The UK should do the same. It’s been hesitant to do so, a large minority of remainders have been holding it back from doing so.

I think we are on track for no deal which is a shame.

Tellmetruth4 · 08/12/2020 09:30

@Tellmetruth4, I wouldn't bet on financial services being undamaged by Brexit, the loss of the "passport" for cross-border services will surely have an impact.

The passporting situation will either be sorted or there will be a workaround. This is why the sector is being relatively quiet compared to its size. There will be some temporary losses due to adjustments. Financial services is the one sector where we have true dominance to the point of a monopoly. Damage to the U.K. capital markets would cause massive ripple affects across the world including the EU. It’s the one sector where the EU stands to lose more if the U.K. can’t function it properly.

sonicbook · 08/12/2020 09:30

The sense of entitlement displayed in this OP is exactly how we're so fucked in the first place.

I buy french cheese 🤣🤣🤣🤣

bellinisurge · 08/12/2020 09:30

"a large minority of remainders have been holding it back from doing so. "
Oh my days, that's soooo funny. Who are these Remainers holding back negotiations?

KleinBlue · 08/12/2020 09:31

That’s hilariously wrong-headed. You don’t think that the UK backtracking on an international treaty it ratified only months earlier as a form of supremely irresponsible brinkmanship that threatens the GFA might have a smidgen to do with EU impatience?
MarieG10 · 08/12/2020 09:32

@ReturntoSpamfritters

"You are wrong, any form of Brexshit will be far worse than Corona."
Well again...what reference do you have or is this your uniformed opinion? I suggest you look at the IFS (Institute for Fiscal Studies). The hit from Brexit is no way as bad as Covid. Fact not personal opinion, although not that we would want any hit at all

sonicbook · 08/12/2020 09:32

This is not a thread to rehash the old sides of the ref, but a stock take on where we are today.

Equals - this is. It a thread where I want to look at the truth of a situation. This is a thread where I want to moan about the ungrateful French who j have supported for years!

WhyDoYouAsk · 08/12/2020 09:32

a large minority of remainders have been holding it back from doing so.

Ah! It’s the remainder’s (sic) fault! 🤣

VodselForDinner · 08/12/2020 09:33

It has really highlighted to me how little respect France have for us as a country

And what is it you think that France should respect? I get the feeling that many on this thread rely on the Telegraph and Daily Mail but there’s an entire world of newspapers out there and many have been highlighting the buffoonery of the UK for the past four years.

It’s not just France that doesn’t respect the UK.

wimhoffbreather · 08/12/2020 09:33

I’ve already commented on this thread, but I just can’t stop thinking about it! Imagine having a personal beef with France over Brexit and thinking you had a point cause you’ve stayed in a couple of gites and ate some baguette. Imagine thinking you had a point. Amazing!

😂😂😂😂 I love it. It’s made my morning 🤣🤣🤣🤣
