No. The Monarchy should end with the Queen

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 17:38

Given that so much of the Sovereign grant is purportedly for their travel and entertainment expenses, they really should be donating a huge chunk of this years back to the public purse or to charity. I somehow doubt it though.

MarshaBradyo · 06/12/2020 17:39

@veeeeh

Like the rest of us, they have done NOTHING really for nine months. We are still paying for their privilege and it goes to show, they are just appendages to the public purse end of day.

Bet they will not have to worry about heating bills or Brexit impacts either. So keep paying your taxes folks to make sure they are all OK.

The pandemic has made them more irrelevant. A few zoom calls. That article at the beginning on how they were finding it hard or whatever was very misplaced. Tone deaf against reality of lockdown for others. Quiet since then.
veeeeh · 06/12/2020 17:57

They are quite irrelevant now and they know it. But we have to pay through our taxes to support their lifestyles. So many of them too.

I have no respect left really now. I really wish I could be more forgiving, but not anymore. Covid and Brexit have told me how.

See explanation here

It's not true, another Facebook nonsense

N0tfinished · 06/12/2020 18:01

Sorry, wrong thread!!

VinylDetective · 06/12/2020 18:11

@PurpleDaisies

Irrelevant. We do have a history of monarchy going back over 1,000 years. I’m happy to preserve an intrinsic part of our culture along with the majority of the UK population.

And you’re the one saying there’s no logical reason to abolish the monarchy. “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it” is not a logical reason to continue with it.

I didn’t say anything about it being what we’ve always done. I said the monarchy is an inherent part of our culture. I don’t believe in throwing away part of our history and culture for the hell of it. Anyway I’ve rehearsed this argument too many times on MN. Nobody ever changes anyone else’s mind, people just get more entrenched. It’s a waste of time and energy.
Angrycat2768 · 06/12/2020 18:29

@topcat2014

You know if we abolish the monarchy we would end up with president Tony Blair don't you?
Im guessing a .illion people will already have said this, but a ceremonial president with no power ( the monarch has no real power) is not the same as a US President. So what if Tony Blair puts his name in a hat and people vote for him? He will just have a diplomatic role, we wont have to have his children, cousins, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews being supported forevermore. They can have a nice London Pad, maybe Clarence House and a country residence. The rest can go back to the state to be used for tourism. If cute little George turns into a neo nazi, what then? We'll be stuck with him, like it or not.
Angrycat2768 · 06/12/2020 18:39

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken

Are you Camilla? Why are you so angry? 😂 It's logical because he will be coming up to 80 or over and although his parents are still alive in their 90's, to have a new king be so old and frail and unable to do many of the jobs required (as both the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are) seems like a huge waste of money and will just feel like a wait until he dies. The monarch has been old for my entire life. If they want to gain any momentum and relevance in the public eye they need a more dynamic and visible leader and family. It's what other countries have done.
William and Kate are hardly ' dynamic ' They can barely rack up 200 engagements between them in a normal year. They did a few zoom meetings from their house and Kate pretended shecwas working while holding a telephone with a blank piece of paper in front of her!
StoneofDestiny · 06/12/2020 18:41

No - monarchy should be abolished

Rosebel · 06/12/2020 18:43

Of course it should be Charles, he's next in line.
I used to quite like William and Kate but in recent times I've changed my mind and reckon they'll end the monarchy.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 18:47

I didn’t say anything about it being what we’ve always done. I said the monarchy is an inherent part of our culture. I don’t believe in throwing away part of our history and culture for the hell of it.

Even when that culture perpetuates deep unfairness in society? I bet people said the same thing about allowing women to vote or become MPs.

VinylDetective · 06/12/2020 18:53

Society will always be unfair. Abolishing the monarchy wouldn’t make a ha’pporth of difference. And your analogy doesn’t work on any level.

Alys20 · 06/12/2020 18:54

YABU: monarchy should be abolished right now, not when the Queen dies.

Miriel · 06/12/2020 18:55

No. The monarchy should be abolished when the Queen dies. If people insist on keeping it, then you get whoever is next in line because that's how it works. You don't get to pick whichever royal you like best.

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 19:01

Well being kind, there is nothing the monarchy contributes to those who pay for their privileged lifestyles. If so, please tell me now.

Others are using foodbanks. That is reprehensible IMV.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 19:02

Society will always be unfair. Abolishing the monarchy wouldn’t make a ha’pporth of difference.

Our head of state wouldn’t be there because of which family they were born into. That is immediately more fair.

FestiveChristmasLights · 06/12/2020 19:02

No, because we have a monarchy and that’s not how it works (even though I’ve veering towards abolishing the monarchy these days). I would rather we were still in the EU but always opposed a Brexit revote because that’s not how a democratic country works.

FestiveChristmasLights · 06/12/2020 19:05

The reality is that the aristocracy and very poor would still be born into the same levels of wealth/poverty which isn’t fair.
PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 19:08

Yes, but that isn’t a reason to keep the head of state as hereditary.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 06/12/2020 19:31

If the Pope can step down from a position that is nominally until death, I don't see why Charles couldn't step down in principle. And William step up. Or not. We are talking about human rules, even if based on long-standing tradition.

Since the Queen took on her role there has been a societal shift in the way we think about those presiding over rich, powerful institutions. The concept of being ordained by God to do so does not resonate as it once did.

Whatever happens now seems rather arbitrary as a consequence.

i hope this whole circus gets abolished once the queen is no more. We really don't need them.

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 19:37

People parroting abolish the monarchy reminds me of that saying about people who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

What’s the value of them then?

Go on. Amaze us with your insight.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 19:38

@Wearywithteens

People parroting abolish the monarchy reminds me of that saying about people who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
Care to expand on that?

No one it just parroting that the monarchy needs to be abolished. Lots of posters have explained their reasons for thinking it will be time to give up on this outdated institution when the queen dies. You’ve just given a trite insult.
