I would like to see Charles finally receive his chance.

Sloth66 · 06/12/2020 19:42

Be nice to have a vote on a Republic.
It’s 2020, the whole institution is looking increasingly irrelevant.

MagicSummer · 06/12/2020 19:43

It is Charles' birthright to be King for however long that may be. Do you really want to go down the route of Presidential elections like the USA?

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 19:44

Again, what exactly do they and their hangers on contribute to our lives?

Ribbon cutting, comments on their fashion choices, what. Go for it and tell me.

Personally haven't missed them over Covid 9 months, so who fkn cares.

Yes.

Nobody in this day and age should have a birthright to be king.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 19:48

And if wouldn’t be a president like a us president. It is essentially a ceremonial role without proper power.

Brefugee · 06/12/2020 19:50

People parroting abolish the monarchy reminds me of that saying about people who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

People spouting shit about how much they bring to the economy probably won't want to look at how many people visit France each year to see Versailles.

Utter tosh. I'm happy that Charles is committed to slimming down the monarchy, and I'd be happy for it to be thinned out of existance.

(I mean imagine you're married to the 2nd in line to the throne and you're trolling round the palace and you bump into one of the offspring of the 7th in line to the throne you have to curtsey because they're born princesses

it's pathetic

WoolieLiberal · 06/12/2020 19:58

Yes. Wills and Kate are a lovely couple who haven’t had any mud thrown at them or thrown any at anyone else.

Also she’s not born royalty so injects some fresh, healthy middle and working class genetics into the next generation of royals.

They both come across as down to earth, met at uni and married for love.

They set a great example.

Yes the monarchy “isn’t fair” and I’m sure there are loads of jealous people here who want is abolished, but most of the world’s happiest, most forward-looking and best run countries are monarchies (think Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Canada) probably because the monarch has only an advisory and ceremonial role in government whereas many countries that have Presidents concentrate too much power in the hands of one man (and it usually is a man still, sadly).

BananaPop2020 · 06/12/2020 20:05

Are you seriously suggesting people want the monarchy abolished because they are jealous 😂😂

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 20:09

Presidents concentrate too much power in the hands of one man (and it usually is a man still, sadly).

It would be a ceremonial president in addition to the prime minister. Like in Ireland.

Can't see the point of them anymore. Realised this during lockdown TBH

I pose the question, would anyone miss them.

Sloth66 · 06/12/2020 20:15

The monarchy as an institution helps perpetuate inequality.
They are a large group of pretty mediocre and in some cases, unpleasant individuals, enjoying lifestyles of obscene wealth and privilege.
Where is the evidence for the arguments about them bringing money in to the Uk?
Look at France !
Join Republic, the campaigning group. Very interesting information on their site.

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 20:24

They set a great example.

Of what? They’re perfectly ordinary.

She looks good in (quite boring) clothes. That’s all they’ve got as far as I can see.

In what way do they set you such a good example?

I don’t get it. So many talented people out there but these two don’t do much. Or what is it that you like?

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 20:31

Are they better than any other couple that could be chosen democratically for that role?

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 20:33

Look, none of them have been seen since March or so, and what did we miss?

Nothing.

But we are still paying for them. And they know they are largely irrelevant now. Apart from the plebs paying for their lifestyles.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 06/12/2020 20:39

Lots of posters have explained their reasons for thinking it will be time to give up on this outdated institution when the queen dies.

But why does the caveat ‘when the queen dies’ come up again and again? You can’t be that stringent a republican if your view is ‘I want a centuries-old institution scrapped, but only once the nice old lady who looks after it now dies’. This is about the constitution of our country; you can’t compare it to keeping Doris the tea lady on until retirement when really we could all just use the Tassimo.

‘When the queen dies’ is a complete unknown point in the future, and we can’t plan a decision like this around it. The queen could die in her sleep tonight. She could live to be 110. Are we really saying we’d be happy to base the future of the monarchy in either scenario?

Look at Brexit. Nearly five years on the fighting continues - and that’s with less than 50 years worth of legal issues to unpick. Do you really think we can change a system where the monarch ratifies every single law in this country overnight?

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 20:46

Oh well, the exceptionalism of Rule Brittania will prevail.

Keep the Monarchy I don't care. But I don't really want to pay for their lifestyles anymore really. Why would I?

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 06/12/2020 20:53

I'm another for saying the monarchy has had it's day in this country.
Once the queen dies I think that should be it. Charles has no kingly qualities that I've ever seen in his adult life. He's a weak man. I can't see people cheering him on when/if he ascends the throne.
Who knows what will actually happen, but no, I don't relish the idea of the monarchy continuing.

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 20:57

What does the monarchy actually give to us

That is my question.

They get a lot of our taxes, and enjoy a great lifestyle, but really, what do we get in return?

maureenfrombarnsley · 06/12/2020 20:58

No. I'm not a fan of his but the Royal rules and traditions are what they are. Charles should get his turn, otherwise it's no longer a monarchy, but some kind of celeb popularity contest.

Rule Britannia, Brexit, and the Monarchy.

We are paying for all this. Hope all are happy to do so.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 21:20

I would much prefer it be scrapped right now but being totally realistic, there’s a much bigger chance of getting it done if it happens at a natural point of ending, ie after the queen. She’s also very popular. Charles much less so.
